Podocarpus latifolius (P. milanjianus) Podocarpaceae Indigenous Common names: Bara: laganehel; Chag: msoso, mtongoso, mtokosi, mtosi tawaso; Eng: podo; Fipa: mfulanyelele; Hehe muvembanyigo; Iraqw: dukmo, nuki; Kinga: mkensi; Lugu muanziri; Meru: mseso; Nyak: nyalulasi; Nyiha: siegi Rangi: mwarinyani; Samb: mse, mse-mawe, msena-mawe msekichanga. Ecology: The natural range for Podocarpus latifolius is from Kenya through Central Africa to South Africa. In Tanzania in occurs mainly in the wetter montane forests of Usambara Kilimanjaro, Pare, Mbulu and Southern Highlands (Iring) and Mbeya). It requires deep, fertile and well-drained soil and the climatic range is wet montane, 900-3,200 m. Uses: Firewood, timber (furniture, boxes), poles, plywood, medicine (roots), shade, ornamental. Description: A forest tree, to 35 m, evergreen, conical when young, the trunk large and buttressed in old trees. BARK: red-brown to grey-brown, narrowly grooved, peeling in long fibrous strips. LEAVES: spirally arranged at the tips of branches very shiny, curved, tough, to 15 cm, with a pointed tip larger and paler when young. CONES: male trees have small catkins, pinkish, to 5 cm; female trees produce soft fleshy "fruits" about 1 cm ovoid, green-purple with a grey bloom. The stalk below the foot is characteristic swollen, soft and red, 1-2 cm, soon falling. Woody seeds smaller than those of P. falcatus. Propagation: Seedlings, wildings. Seed info.: No. of seeds per kg: 2,000-2,300. Ideally seeds germinate in 30-40 days with a germination rate of 60-80%. treatment: remove the red swollen receptacle, then spread out the fruit. in the shade. Sow seed within 4 days to avoid loss of viability as seeds are very sensitive to drying out. Here we used Southern blot hybridisation, PCR and sequencing approaches to analyse genomic organisation of rRNA genes in all large gymnosperm groups, including Coniferales, Ginkgoales, Gnetales and Cycadales. The data are provided for 27 species (21 genera). The 5S units linked to the 35S rDNA units occur in some but not all Gnetales, Coniferales and in Ginkgo (B30% of the species analysed), while the remaining exhibit separate organisation. The linked 5S rRNA genes may occur as single-copy insertions or as short tandems embedded in the 26S–18S rDNA intergenic spacer (IGS). The 5S transcript may be encoded by the same (Ginkgo, Ephedra) or opposite (Podocarpus) DNA strand as the 18S–5.8S–26S genes. In addition, pseudogenised 5S copies were also found in some IGS types. Both L- and S-type units have been largely homogenised across the genomes. Phylogenetic relationships based on the comparison of 5S coding sequences suggest that the 5S genes independently inserted IGS at least three times in the course of gymnosperm evolution. Frequent transpositions and rearrangements of basic units indicate relatively relaxed selection pressures imposed on genomic organisation of 5S genes in plants.

Measuring frost tolerance involves various steps, each of which will vary depending on the objectives of the study. This systematic map takes an overall view of the literature that uses frost tolerance measuring techniques in gymnosperms, focusing mainly on conifers. Many different techniques have been used for testing, and there has been little change in methodology since 2000. The gold standard remains the field observation study, which, due to its cost, is frequently substituted by other techniques. Closed enclosure freezing tests (all non-field freezing tests) are done using various types of equipment for inducing artificial freezing. An examination of the literature indicates that several factors have to be controlled in order to measure frost tolerance in a manner similar to observation in a field study. Equipment that allows controlling the freezing rate, frost exposure time and thawing rate would obtain results closer to field studies. Other important factors in study design are the number of test temperatures used, the range of temperatures selected and the decrements between the temperatures, which should be selected based on expected frost tolerance of the tissue and species. Abstract Forests hold a plethora of ecological functions, that are critical in the maintenance of biodiversity. For instance, the mistbelt forests are small and fragmented forest ecosystems, which are dominated by South Africa’s national tree - Podocarpus latifolius or the ‘real’ Yellowwood. The Yellowwood trees are regarded as a priority species, because they support large communities of plants, birds and mammals, attributing to the maintenance of biodiversity. They also store carbon and provide habitat as well as resources for pollinators. Meanwhile, they produce durable, high quality timber which is harvested for cultural, medicinal and commercial use. Subsequently, the podocarps have been listed as endangered species owing to extensive logging. Current forest species productivity information is urgently required in the characterisation of forest condition, especially that of disturbed habitats which support a variety of indigenous species and contribute immensely to ecosystem resilience. Leaf area index (LAI) is a widely applied measure of photosynthetic capacity and productivity, that may reveal this information. Meanwhile, local level floral biodiversity and productivity is driven by topographic heterogeneity. Micro landscape level processes associated with topography are important in the determination of leaf area index, that may be applied as proxy measures of productivity.

Studies on complex multi-species and highly structured forest ecosystems are scarce. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to quantify competition effects and analyse competition responses in a species-diverse afrotemperate forest in South Africa, based on an observational study with mapped tree positions and long-term diameter increment records. Methods: The sensitivity to competition was analysed for individual species and involved the calculation of the slope of the linear relation between the value of a competition index (CI) and diameter growth as a measure of sensitivity. In a next step different competition indices were combined and tree diameters were grouped in three classes as surrogates for canopy status and ontogenetic stage. Results: Five competition indices were found to be effective in showing sensitivity to competition for a number of canopy and sub-canopy species. Significant linear regressions were fitted for 18 of a total of 25 species. Species reactions varied significantly in their sensitivity to the different CIs. The indices were classified as belonging to two groups, those that responded more to local crowding and those that are more sensitive to overtopping, which revealed species-specific sensitivities to both factors. The analysis based on diameter classes revealed that species clearly changed their sensitivity to crowding or overtopping depending on diameter.

Moll* A b st r a c t The known distribution and history of Mistbelt Mixed Podocarpus Forest in Natal, and its utilization and destruction are discussed. It is suggested that there may be a general drying of the forest climate, which is supported by evidence from canopy tree growth and regeneration. That this generally drier period has contributed to the rapid rate of forest degradation is postulated, and the need for the immediate implementation of conservation measures to ensure the safety of a represen tative area of forest is stressed. D e f in it io n a n d D istribution Mistbelt Mixed Podocarpus Forest was the name given by Edwards (1967) in his survey of the vegetation of the Tugela Basin, for the climatic climax forest vegetation of the Natal Mistbelt. Previously this forest type had been variously called High Timber Forest (Fourcade, 1889), Yellow Wood Bush (Bews, 1912) and Temperate Forest (Pentz, 1945; Acocks, 1953). It generally occurs between about 3 500 ft (1 000 m) and 4 500 to 5 000 ft (1 300 to 1 500 m), on steep south-facing slopes. These slopes are subject to relatively frequent mist, particularly in summer, (hence the name ‘mistbelt’), and the rainfall is good (at least 1 000 mm a year), so the region is rela tively moist. Temperatures are equable, with low maxima (about 37°C), high minima (about —4°C), and an annual mean of about 16CC (Weather Bureau, 1954).

However, based on new information from different morphological and anatomical studies, these sections were recognised as new genera. This change in nomenclature sometimes is problematic when consulting ethnobotanical data especially when selecting plants for pharmacological screening, thus there is a need to clear any ambiguity with the nomenclature. Species of Podocarpus s.l. are important timber trees in their native areas. They have been used by many communities in traditional medicine and as a source of income. Podocarpus s.l. is used in the treatment of fevers, asthma, coughs, cholera, distemper, chest complaints and venereal diseases. Other uses include timber, food, wax, tannin and as ornamental trees. Although extensive research has been carried out on species of Podocarpus s.l over the last decade, relatively little is known about the African species compared to those of New Zealand, Australia, China and Japan. Phytochemical studies have led to the isolation and elucidation of various terpenoids and nor- and bis- norditerpenoid dilactones. Biflavonoids of the amentoflavone and hinokiflavone types have also been isolated.
