The evidence of the earliest settlement extends back as far as the Epipaleolithic Period (40.000 - 9.000 BC) and can be seen in the caves found in Samandağ - Çevlik, Antakya - Şenköy and Yayladağ - Üçağızlı. From 9000 BC onwards, The region of Hatay was controlled successively by the Akkadians, the Hurrians, the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Persians, the Macedonians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Byzantines, the Seljuks, the Crusaders, the Mamluks, and the Ottomans. Antakya, the biblical city of Antioch, was founded by Seleucus, one of the heirs to Alexander the Great’s vast empire around the year 300 BC. The Vespasianus Titus Tunnel, Hatay Kurtuluş (Herod) Street, one of Antakya’s main thoroughfares, is said to hold the record for being the first illuminated street; in ancient times it was lit up every night with thousands of torches. (Herod) Street in present time In the 7th century, Antioch was one of five patriarchal centres of the Christian Church, the others being Rome, Alexandria, Jerusalem, and İstanbul (Constantinople). Under the Romans, Antioch, the capital of the province of Syria with a population around 500,000 continued to thrive with commerce and culture. The city became one of the empire’s greatest cities with a considerable Jewish community. The city became the capital of the Seleucid Empire stretching from Macedonia nearly to India. The empire facilitated trade, and Antioch became an important point on the Silk Road, with caravans of luxury goods bringing fabulous wealth and a scandalously sybaritic lifestyle. Home to the finest Roman and Byzantine mosaics and a unique gastronomy meet cultures here. (Herod) Street in ancient time www.expo2021hatay.com Church of Saint Peter Saint Peter came here to preach, and Saints Paul and Barnabas used it as their base for missionary works. It was here that the saints decided to expand their mission to Gentiles calling their followers Christians. Today, Church of Saint Peter is believed to be where the Apostle Peter preached when he visited Antioch and is considered to be one of the earliest Christian houses of worship. In 1963, the Papacy designated the site as a place of pilgrimage and also recognized it as the world's first cathedral. Every year on June 29th, a special service is conducted at the Church of St. Peter that is attended by Christians and clergymen from all over the world. Antioch flourished under the Byzantines until 6th century. Later overrun by the Persians, then the Arabs (700s) and the Seljuk Turks (1084), the city regained importance under the Crusaders (1098) as the capital of their Principality of Antioch, but conquest by the Mamelukes in 1268 saw its utter destruction. During the Egypt expedition of Yavuz Sultan Selim, Hatay came under the control of Ottoman. By a plebiscite in 1939 it was returned to Turkey along with the entire Sanjak of Alexandretta, the province now called Hatay. www.expo2021hatay.com Antakya, one of the 52 places to go in 2020: Here’s where the New York Times says you should visit Antakya has rich offerings for its visitors. Accepted 3 August, 2009 Soil drainage is one of the important soil properties affecting plant growth, water transfer and solute transport in soils. Soil drainage is also an environmental component affecting irrigation and soil reclamation, land capability for agriculture, flood control systems, engineering, health and infectious diseases. The objective of this study was to map soil drainage classes by using Landsat image in Amik Plain (Hatay, Turkey). Terrain and vegetation are characterized by digital terrain attributes, and vegetation indices using a LANDSAT-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Image. The study benefits from five data sources: Landsat ETM image, topographic maps, soil maps, State Hydraulic Works (DSI) land cover records and ground data from field surveys. Image classification was carried out using Maximum Likelihood (ML) Classification with supervised training. Soil drainage classes were determined, thus finalizing the process of mapping after each mapping unit and drainage class prepared as a result of the ML classification were validated on site. According to the drainage map prepared using satellite image and ground data, 51,4% (37,234 ha) of Amik Plain are well drained and moderately well drained.

Its flow regime shows typical winter peak flows due to increased precipitation, and summer low flows maintained exclusively by groundwater discharge. The river is mainly used for irrigation purposes with several agricultural projects planned in the three riparian countries. Water quality at the headwaters is generally good, but deteriorates in the middle and lower reaches of the river due to agricultural, urban and industrial activities. There is no basin-wide agreement between the three riparians, but there are several bilateral agreements in place on issues such as water allocation (Lebanon-Syria) and the joint The Dardara Falls on the Orontes in Lebanon, 2009. In the 1950s Georges Tchalenko theorized that these sites relied on intensive olive monoculture to mass export olive oil to urban centers. Later excavations discovered widespread cultivation of grains, fruit, and beans which directly contradicted Tchalenko’s assertion of sole reliance on oleoculture.

  • Heavy Metal Pollution Around International Hatay Airport
NESciences, 2017, 2 (1): 18-24 -RESEARCH ARTICLE- Heavy Metal Pollution Around International Hatay Airport 1Abdullah Özkan1*, Vildan Özkan1, Şana Sungur2, Hazal Birses1 1 Iskenderun Technical University, Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Hatay, 31200 2 Mustafa Kemal University, Department of Chemistry, Hatay, 31024 Abstract In this study, it was aimed to determine the heavy metal pollution in the agricultural lands around Hatay airport and travel possible alteration in the amount of heavy metal on the land in accordance with the distance to the airport. For this purpose, the airport was chosen as the center and 27 soil samples were obtained around the airport at 2 km intervals in depth ranging from 0 to 30 cm. Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chrome (Cr), cobalt (Co), aluminium (Al), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) elements in soil samples were analysed using MP-AES instrument by DTPA method. (3 repetition for each sample). As a result of the analysis, heavy metal concentrations were found as Pb 0-1.45 mg/kg, Cd 0-0.220 mg/kg, Ni 0-3.95 mg/kg, Cr 0-0.780 mg/kg, Co 0-0.270 mg/kg, Al 0-0.700 mg/kg, Fe 1.47- 16.2 mg/kg, Cu 0.400-5.35 mg/kg, Mn 0-19 mg/kg and Zn 0.050-3.14 mg/kg. When comparing the obtained data through this study with allowable concentrations of heavy metals in soil of Environment and Forest Directorates Guidance, it was determined that the heavy metal concentration of the soil does not pose any problems in terms of heavy metal pollution.
