  • The Formulation of Nazi Policy Towards the Catholic Church in Bavaria from 1933 to 1936
CCHA Study Sessions, 34(1967), 57-75 The Formulation of Nazi Policy towards the Catholic Church in Bavaria from 1933 to 1936 J. Q. CAHILL, Ph.D. This study concentrates on the relations between church and state in Bavaria as a problem for Nazi policy-makers at the beginning of Nazi rule. Emphasizing the Nazi side of this problem provides a balance to those studies which either condemn or defend the actions of church leaders during the Nazi period. To understand the past is the first goal of historians. A better understanding of the attitudes and actions of National Socialist leaders and organizations toward the Catholic Church will provide a broader perspective for judging the actions of churchmen. Such an approach can also suggest clues or confirm views about the basic nature of Nazi totalitarianism. Was National Socialism essentially opposed to Catholicism ? Was its primary emphasis on domestic policy or on foreign policy ? Perhaps basic to these questions is whether Nazism was monolithic in its ruling structure or composed of diverse competing groups. I believe that the question of Nazi church policy is worth studying for its own sake, but it has further implications. The materials used for this study are mainly microfilms of documents from the Main Archive of the National Socialist German Worker's Party in Munich, and from the files of the Reich Governor in Bavaria. An important part of these documents is made up of police reports, which, however, include more than mere descriptions of crimes and charges. But the nature of this material poses the danger of emphasizing those elements for which we have the most documentation.

  • Historischehistorische Archäologie 2017 Sonderband 2017 Archäologiefestschrift Für Andreas Heege
HistorischeHistorische Archäologie 2017 Sonderband 2017 ArchäologieFestschrift für Andreas Heege The shoe style ‘Einbeck’ and four patten styles from the city of Einbeck Marquita Volken Introduction The town of Einbeck, located in Lower Saxony, Germany, is renowned for its beautiful sixteenth century timber framed houses, under which lies a wealth of archaeological material, conserved in humid ground that allows the preserva- tion of many organic materials such as wood, bone and leather. In 2002 the ar- chaeological treasures and medieval to modern period history of Einbeck were presented in the book Einbeck im Mittelalter by Andreas Heege with Eva Roth Heege. Given the immense quantity of material presented, the archaeological leather finds are summarily presented in short section of a few pages though more than a thousand leather fragments were recovered (Heege/Volken/Volk- en 2002, 294–299). A select number of medieval shoe styles were illustrated, including a rare mid fourteenth century style with a distinctive round open side, named the Petersilienwasser (-J) style after the important archaeological site in the town centre (Heege et al. 2002, 298, figure 627 bottom and in: Volken 2014, cat. no. 17.25). Medieval shoe styles and their cutting patterns are remarkably uniform throughout Europe, which allows a named shoe style/cutting pattern typological classification for recovered archaeological shoes. The lack of strictly regional shoe styles is most probably due to a widespread control of produc- tion methods by shoemaker’s guilds. Medieval shoes were made with the turn shoe construction, which imposes a single, thin leather sole. When walking on natural grounds (earth, wood, gravel) the thin leather sole wears away slowly, but stone, pavement and other hard surfaces abrade the soles quickly.

  • Victims Reparation for Derg Crimes
Victims Reparation for Derg Crimes: Challenges and Prospects Fisseha M. Tekle Submitted to Central European University Legal Studies Department In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of LL.M in International Human Rights Law CEU eTD Collection Supervisor: Professor Roger O’keefe 2013 Executive Summary This research is about challenges and prospects to ensure victims’ reparation for mass human rights violations in circumstances where States fail their obligations to avail remedies. International human rights embodied in conventions and customary international laws set the minimum standards States shall guarantee to the subjects of their jurisdiction. Moreover they stipulate the remedies States shall avail in case of violation of those minimum standards. However, it still remains within the power of States to live up to their obligations, or not. Particularly, this paper explores challenges and prospects for claiming reparation for victims of mass atrocities that occurred in Ethiopia between 1974 and 1991 by the Derg era. The findings indicate that there are challenges such as expiry of period of limitation and non-justiciability of constitutional provisions in domestic Courts. And in the presence of these impediments locally, international mechanisms are also blocked due to the principle of State immunity even if those violations pertain to peremptory rules of international law such as prohibition of genocide, torture and grave breaches of the laws of war. This thesis finds innovative reparation mechanisms in jurisprudences of regional and international tribunals with regard to mass human rights violations. However, victims of the Derg crimes face challenges accessing them due to the intricacies of the international law that are ill-fitting to the regime of human rights laws.

When they were asked to depict a second multi-nation war after , there was a precedent and format for them to follow. Especially in Northern Europe, small groups of soldiers became a popular subject for paintings and especially prints by many artists, including Urs Graf , who is unusual in that he was a professional Swiss mercenary for many years. The usage of the term "military art" has evolved since the middle of the 19th century. The French began to paint the war only after the war was ended in United States Army history museums. This article includes a list of general references , but it remains largely unverified because it lacks sufficient corresponding inline citations. War art, a significant expression of any culture and its significant legacies, combines artistic and documentary functions to provide a pictorial portrayal of war scenes and show "how war shapes lives. Military art is art with a military subject matter, regardless of its style or medium. The violent tastes of the Anglo-Saxon elite managed to add the Harrowing of Hell , conceived as a raid on Satan's stronghold, led by Christ, to the standard group of scenes for a cycle on the Life of Christ.
