How to contact us: Annie Peiffer, President Alumni Weekend This Spring (315) 597-9604 [email protected] We did it! We somehow managed to get through 258 Cuyler St., Palmyra, NY 14522 Alumni Weekend. We weren’t sure how it was going to Bebe Cappadonia, Vice President play out, but there were hours of the usual reminiscing (see Cappy) and laughs and warming up rusty voices… and then Merri-Lou McKeever, Secretary/Treasurer there was the empty void. We were missing our (585) 461-2565 fearless leader. [email protected] 189 Barrington St., Rochester, NY 14607 Thanks to Don Lynskey we were able to stay focused Charlie Johnstone, Website Manager and have a good rehearsal and finally deliver a (585) 367-2357 concert that C would have been proud of. [email protected]. 4235 South Frost Hollow, Livonia, NY 14487 Our Saturday night gathering convened at the Almond Community Bldg. and enjoyed the music of ’57 Varieties and DJ music and dancing. The results of a survey that Archive CDs was passed around told us that you want to continue To order CDs of old concerts, go our website at getting together for Alumni Weekend, so that’s what http://web.alfredstate.edu/asac/ we’re doing. Cappadonia generosity.) Scholarship are. So, playing catch up, here are the 2013 and 2014 winners. I still can sing and belong to a glee club of retired people, but we are good. Our church is without an organist and choir director. (and a later note)… Thank you for the info on the concert. I am camping for 10 days with my wife in my area up the Hudson river. I did miss the concert but Page 3 of 7 Alfred Choir Alumni Newsletter – October 2014 it is a 5 hour drive from our home in Hyde Park, NY? I have to depend on my great wife Janet as I only have One eye so my 3D sight is tough. Will send my dues when I get back as I will never forget my 3 years with Cappy. Mike Melville (87 - 89) …Even though I have not made it to an Alumni weekend in over 10 years now, I still look forward to hearing about it, seeing pictures, and hearing the songs. I do hope one day to make it back. It just seems that April is never a good month for me to get away. Anyways, hope all is well with you and the rest of the officers. I miss that Mr. C is no longer with us, but I appreciate you and the other's efforts to keep Alumni weekend alive! Jocelyn J. Baschnagel, M.S. (1998) Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I am sitting here in tears....the music is absolutely beautiful and I LOVED all of the pictures. 'C's ode was incredible...made me laugh and cry. I am terribly sad to not have been able to make this. My at home baking business has been doing quite well and for that weekend I had someone booked with an order for a year :( A good thing and a bad thing I suppose. I will not be placing orders when the next alumni weekend arrives, that's for sure. I hate missing it. Gregg Newhouse (1970) Sending along a picture of grandson Charles Jackson Walsh born early on Saturday morning to daughter Nicole and son-in-law Scott. New mother and son are doing very well. Grandpa (Gregg) held Charley the first time for about 10 minutes on Saturday evening... he looks better in person. Have a good Memorial Day. Marty Wright (1962) To catch you up on what I've been doing, I stopped working altogether two years ago. I had retired from my officialship as a Supreme Court Reporter 12 years ago and then returned to the freelance field for another 10 years. I figured 50 years doing the same thing was enough. We now have four grandsons, two from my one daughter and two from my other daughter's remarriage. They are nine months, four years, fourteen years, and sixteen years old. The 16-year old just got his permit today. Okay, stay off the roads for a while. I'm still busy doing needlecraft, reading a lot, and growing African Violets as a hobby. We babysit the two youngest every Monday, but the four year old starts Kindergarten in September. Other than that, life's on the quiet side. I hope all is well with you. I don't know where the time goes. It seems like yesterday I was standing on the risers and going on tour with the choir. I still love music and enjoy singing, but not in any organized capacity, mostly in the church congregation. Page 4 of 7 Alfred Choir Alumni Newsletter – October 2014 Judy Connor (1965) I am sorry I will not be able to attend, as I am still snow-birding in Arizona. But, I have just posted on facebook---don't know how many it applies to, but 50 YEARS ago, we went to the WORLD'S FAIR on Long Island and had an absolutely FABULOUS trip....think we sang two concerts…and were some of the first people to see the Walt Disney attractions--It's a Small World in the Pepsi Pavilion (no wonder i still love that attraction) and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln in the Illinois pavilion, and GE's pavilion featured the Carousel of Progress, still at Disney World to this day (though updated to include obsolete articles such as typewriters, record players, and even cassettes.) I know you all will have a great time remembering all the good memories. He years. A good, long-time friend of Mr. C’s, they arranged many of the familiar signature tunes shared many hours of crafting tunes and sung by the Varsity Jazz group and the choir enjoying friendship. We will all miss Dick and as well. hope that we might continue to see his wife, An incredibly talented musician, we were Helen, and his son, Dave, back for visits once in a while. Page 6 of 7 Alfred Choir Alumni Newsletter – October 2014 Dear Alumni: We wanted to check in with all of you as we usually do with our Fall alumni newsletter. I was just looking at the letter that I sent out last October to Alumni and the fun trips that C and I took to Lexington, Kentucky and Outer Banks SC, with family, as well as C’s 90th Birthday celebration in September. It’s so hard to believe that he was still with us at this time last year. I’m sure many of you also are aware that C’s son, Mark, (56) passed away unexpectedly in September as a result of acute pancreatitis. In less than a week, he was sick, hospitalized, and died as a result of that. Needless to say, the family was in a state of shock with yet another gathering at Dagon’s Funeral Home in Hornell to say goodbye to another family member. So much within 7 months….It’s been tough going through all of the “firsts” this year….but we’re hanging in there, and are blessed to have family and such wonderful alumni friends for support. Thank you all! Sadly, another one of our alumni family, Dick Lane, the very talented flying keyboard fingers in ’57 Varieties, also passed away in September as a result of cancer. His family and friends gathered at a memorial service in Webster on September 21. His instrumental group which includes some members of ’57 Varieties played some of his favorite tunes and members of Alumni Jazz were honored to sing the Blessing of Aaron for his tribute. His son, Dave Lane, played bass guitar with his Dad’s group as well. Dave was in choir in the early ‘80’s and wants to be more involved in our alumni in the future.
