SEPTEMBER, 1976 South Shore Yacht Club SOUTH SHORE PARK MILWAUKEE, WIS, PHONE 4^1-2331

SOUTH SHORE YACHT CLUB From the viewpoint of both a racer and a co-chairman, I am happy that the MILWAUKEE BAY 210 FLEET HOSTS Milwaukee Bay 210 Fleet hosted the Midwest, Graves and Nationals. I am also MIDWEST, GRAVES AND happy that it is over. Finally, it is time to relax and to come back to earth. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA'S There has been two years of work since Jim and Barb Drake drove to Boston and convinced the class officers that Milwaukee should host the chamion- ship regatta — two years of planning, meeting, writing letters and making phone calls. I am proud of the results, though. Our fleet organized a first-class cham• pionship regatta and we have a long list of people to thank. Firstly, our fleet members, who put in the long hours of n0 planning. Secondly, Herb Knepper for roasting the pig that impressed every• body — especially the easterners. Thirdly, all of the people who provided housing for our guests. Fourthly, the boat owners who offered their boats as stake boats, spectator boats or judges boats. Fifthly, the board of directors for their cooper• ation in using the grounds and the tender for the 210's. Sixthly, Marie for the good food and service at lunch time. There are more, I am sure, but in gen• eral, one big thank-you to everybody who helped make the 1976 210 National Championships an outstanding regatta.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a busy day and a half of measur• ing sails, inulls, spars and keels, on Mon• day and Tuesday, the National Cham- pionship Regatta began on Tuesday after• noon, August 17th in moderate wind. Bill Hicks from Boston Bay won the first race, but the defending champs, John Hurwitch and Jim Summers of Fal• mouth, Mass. were able to retain their title with finishes of 4-1-2-1-2-1. Bill O'Connor of Marblehead was second and Ralph DiMattia of Boston Bay was third. The top three midwestern finishers were Dan Pender of Gull Lake in 6th place, Sherm Poppin of Muskegon in 10th place, and Rick and Ray Schuiz in 11th place. Racing conditions were very good over the four days of racing. Morning races usually saw light winds and smooth water. Afternoon races usually saw strong winds and a chop. The only tragedy of the regatta in• volved Ted Sneddon. After losing his mast in the Graves Plaque Regatta, Ted borrowed Tom Feller's boat for the Nationals. Unfortunately, Ted was in• volved in a serious collision before the^N start of the third race. Ted was hospital ized with a broken nose, stitches above his eye and three broken ribs. Ted tells us that he is sore everywhere, but doc• tors expect a complete recovery. Charlie Strassman also received multiple bruises in the collision. Social events during the regatta in• cluded a pig roast, a corn roast, a brewery tour and an awards dinner. 7

SLIP COMMITTEE REPORT

By Carl L. Muelley

The status of electrical outlets for the new slips seems headed for a final solu• tion; however don't hold me to any pos• itive promises. All of us have had some experience with our great system of government codes, in this case related to electrical codes; need I say more. After all of these years of satisfactory operation with our electrical system on the slips, someone decided the code needed changing. As a result our system of a central circuit-breaker box taking care of entire slip sections was in danger of being scrapped which would have necessitated a revamping of our electrical plans for the new slips — and of course at a much higher price. Our electrical contractor and your slip committee chairman have been work• ing hard to solve this problem and with new information obtained from manu• facturers of the equipment we need, it appears we can continue with the present system and still meet the new code re• quirements. This requires a complete water-proof outlet box with or without the electric cord being plugged in and with underwriters seal of approval. Thanks for working with us on this problem. In the meantime if power is essential for your boat arrangements which have already been made, I may be able to accommodate those essential needs. Contact me or Dick Pfoertsch.
