The Mystics Press Kit 2020 Page 6 Of 8 Presenting The Mystics GEORGE GALFO – Original Member George Galfo, has been the driving force of The Mystics for several years. His career started in the music and entertainment industry in 1958 as a member of The Overons, the group that evolved into The Mystics. As The Mystics original second tenor, George is heard on all the group’s Laurie Records releases as well as several unreleased demos that are highly regarded by collectors. George appeared with the group on several TV shows in the 1950’s and 1960’s including the Clay Cole Show, Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, Alan Freed’s Big Beat Show and Jim Gallant’s Bandstand in Connecticut. Stage highlights of the day included Alan Freed Stage Show at the Brooklyn Fox, the Cavalcade of Stars tour run by the Legendary General Artists Corporation and Palisades Park appearances hosted by “Cousin Brucie” Morrow. Aside from their own hit records, George and the group provided vocal back-up for several other artists, including Connie Francis on her 1959 release “Tommy”. George led his own Mystics group in 2002, emerging as a charismatic lead singer, in his own right. In 2011, Phil Cracolici, George’s uncle was the group’s original lead singer, who joined forces with George and his group to carry on the torch. The Mystics legacy continues on through the 21st century. George Galfo was inducted into the Doo Wop Music Hall of Fame on March 14, 2015! PHIL CRACOLICI – Original Member Phil Cracolici, started his singing career in 1956 with friends and soon after, formed The Overons with his brother Albee and his nephew George Galfo. The Overons later evolved into The Mystics. Phil is the original lead singer of the group’s mega seller 1959 International and National Hit “HUSHABYE”, as well as their highly-regarded follow-up “Don’t Take The Stars”….Prior to joining his nephew George in 2011, Phil was with the Brooklyn Reunion (along with the Classics and The Passions) performing throughout the New York area and on PBS-TV specials. Phil Cracolici was inducted into the Doo Wop Music Hall of Fame on March 14, 2015! The Mystics Press Kit 2020 Page 7 Of 8 Presenting The Mystics ROCKY MARSICANO Rocky Marsicano, began his singing career at an early age. His love of singing started in grammar school by joining a glee club and in the late 1950’s he found himself harmonizing with the guys on the street corners. In a short time Rocky, along with Joe Fatone, formed a neighborhood group called “The Onions” that performed locally well into the 1970’s. In the later 1970’s Rocky became a member, first tenor and recording artist with “The Rifts”. In 1985 Rocky was invited to become a member of “Lenny Cocco and The Chimes”, a relationship that lasted over twenty-three years while performing all over the country as first tenor, lead and recording artist on two Cd’s. In 2002 Rocky performed for several months with “Jay Siegel” and “The Tokens”, later returning back to “Lenny Cocco and The Chimes”. From early 2008 until late 2011 Rocky performed with “The Manhattan Skyline”. Rocky Marsicano now resides in Florida and has proudly become a member of the group he has always admired, “The Mystics”. RALPH VARRONE Ralph Varrone, started his singing career on the street corners of Flushing - Jamaica, New York in 1959. He joined the “El Jays” in 1962 and recorded with them in 1963 on the CB Label. Ralph was the lead singer for the New York based acappella group “The Traditions” from 1984 to 1986. He went on to join “Risky Business” the premiere Oldies Band on Long Island for twenty-six years. This is the ultimate Neil Diamond record. Not necessarily the best -- he's at his most appealing crafting in the studio -- but certainly the ultimate, capturing all the kitsch and glitz of Neil Diamond, the showman. And that also means that it's not just loaded with flair, but with filler, songs like "Porcupine Pie," "Soggy Pretzels," and "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind" -- attempts to write grand, sweeping epics that collapse under their own weight. Still, that's part of the charm of Diamond and while it can sound unbearable on studio albums, it makes some sense here, surrounded by his pomp and circumstance. That spectacle is the great thing about the record, since it inflates not just his great songs, it gives the weaker moments character.

  • The Influence of Latin Music in Postwar New York City Overview
THE INFLUENCE OF LATIN MUSIC IN POSTWAR NEW YORK CITY OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did the growth of New York City’s Latino population in the 1940s and 50s help to increase the popularity of Latin music and dance in American culture? OVERVIEW In the fall of 1957, the Broadway musical West Side Story opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in Manhattan. Featuring a musical score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, its story centered on two rival teenage gangs -- the all-white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks -- facing off on the streets of New York City. The play’s showcase number, “America,” dramatized the disparities between life in rural Puerto Rico and the opportunities available to immigrants living in the United States. Bernstein’s orchestrations drew heavily on Latin-style percussion and dance rhythms -- sounds that had become prominent in New York over the course of the 1940s and 50s, as the city’s Latino population boomed. During and immediately following World War II, the United States experienced an historic wave of immigration from Latin America, including a record number of immigrants from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. In 1940, the U.S. census reported just under 70,000 Puerto Ricans living in the country; by 1950, that number had grown to over 226,000, with eighty-three percent of that population living in New York City. As alluded to in West Side Story, many Puerto Ricans, (who held natural born U.S. citizenship), arrived seeking jobs in factories and on ship docks -- industries with greater economic security than the agricultural work available in Puerto Rico.
