Chickenpox and Shingles If you've had chickenpox, you're at risk of another disease caused by the vari- cella-zoster virus called shingles. After a chickenpox infection, some of the varicella- zoster virus may remain in your nerve cells. Many years later, the virus can reactivate and resurface as shingles — a painful band of short-lived blisters. The virus is more likely to reappear in older adults and people with weakened immune systems. A shingles vaccine is available and is recommended for adults age 60 and older who have had chickenpox. Please keep in mind that the shingles vaccine IS NOT covered by Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) or Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). Generally, Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D) cover all commercially-available vaccines (like the shingles shot) needed to prevent illness. Contact your Medicare drug plan for more information about coverage. If your physician offers you the vaccine and provides both the vaccine and the administration, Medicare may deny the claim.
