Five ammonite associations are studied from the Gerecse and Pilis Mountains (Bakony Unit) and one from the Mecsek Mountains, in southern Hungary. They indicate a late Middle to early Upper Oxfordian age (Bifurcatus to lower Bimammatum Zone.) The age of lower ammonite associations from the Bakony Unit ranges from late Transversarium to lower Bifurcatus Zone on the basis of Passendorferia af birmensdorfensis (Moesch) and Gregoryceras fouquei (IOlian). An upper assemblage yielding among other forms, Euaspidoceras hypselum (Oppel), Benetticeras sp. and Passendorferia rozaki Melendez, is assigned to lower Hypselum Subzone, Bimammatum Zone. The ammonite association from the Mecsek Mountains contains common Aspidoceratids, including Euaspidoceras hypselum (Oppel) and Ataxioceratids including some representatives of Orthos-phinctes (M & m) close to the 0. tiziani (Oppel) group, suggesting an upper horizon within the Hypselum Subzone. INTRODUCTION In Hungary, ammonite bearing Jurassic rocks crop out in the territory of the Transdanubian Central Range (Bakony Unit) and in south, in the Mecsek and Villhy Mountains [l]. A detailed account, with full references on the Hungarian Jurassic was given lately [Z]. Since the early times of the Hungarian geology, a special attention was dedicated to the Jurassic biostratigraphy and ammonitology. -

ROSALIA Handbooks ROSALIA Handbooks Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control Invasive plant species pose major agricultural, silvicultural, human health and ecological problems worldwide, and are considered the most signifi cant threat for nature conservation. Species invading natural areas in Hungary have been described by a number of books published in the Practical Experiences in Invasive Alien Plant Control last few years. A great amount of experience has been gathered about the control of these species in some areas, which we can read about in an increasing number of articles; however, no book has been published with regards to the whole country. Invasions affecting larger areas require high energy and cost input, and the effectiveness and successfulness of control can be infl uenced by a number of factors. The development of effective, widely applicable control and eradication technologies is preceded by experiments and examinations which are based on a lot of practical experience and often loaded with negative experiences. National park directorates, forest and agricultural managers and NGOs in many parts of Hungary are combatting the spread of invasive species; however, the exchange of information and conclusion of experiences among the managing bodies is indispensable. The aim of the present volume is to facilitate this by summarizing experiences and the methods applied in practice; which, we hope, will enable us to successfully stop the further spread of invasive plant species and effectively protect our natural values. In this study, we present quartz OSL and K feldspar post-IR IRSL290 ages for the sandy fluvial, aeolian and slope sediments collected from Danube terraces IIb, III and V. The feldspar post-IR IRSL290 ages without residual dose subtraction are older than the quartz OSL ages, except for one sample, but the two sets of ages are overlapping within one or two sigma errors. In the bleaching experiment under natural sunlight during summer, an unbleachable component ranging from 2.5±0.7 Gy to 5.2±0.3 Gy after 30 h exposure to bright sunshine is observed and it corresponds to 3−8% of the measured K feldspar post-IR IRSL290 equivalent doses. -

Mineral. 1992, 4, 581-595 Origin of Eocene-covered karst bauxites of the Transdanubian Central Range (Hungary) evidence for early Eocene volcanism ISTVÁN DUNKL Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Laboratory for Geochemical Research, H-1112, Budapest, Budaörsi üt 45, Hungary Abstract : Fission track (FT) ages measured in detrital zircon crystals from Eocene-covered bauxites of the Transdanubian Central Range (TCR) appear to reflect the cooling age of the source rock(s). Thus, by means of FT-dating of zircons new information could be obtained to explain the problem of source rocks debated so far. Since the majority of the detrital zircon crystals proved to be euhedral, their typologic analysis permitted conclu sions regarding the petrographic character of the source rocks as well. (1) In the light of the age results it is clear that the pyroclastics of a Pre-Middle Eocene volcanism contributed to the bauxite material which was deposited on the exposed karstified carbonate terrain. Andesitic tuffite layers intercalated in the upper part of the overlying Eocene sequence are traces of younger explosions of the same Paleogene volcanic event. Zircon grains found in the bauxite are morphometricaHy identical to those found in the younger Eocene pyroclastics of andesitic character. (2) A euhedral zircon population of 210 to 260 million years was also identified in some of the bauxite deposits studied. These crystals derive most probably from Middle Triassic trachyandesite tuffs of the Central Range, though anatectic granitic sources cannot be excluded. (3) Those zircon grains which are the oldest and fairly well rounded are thought to derive from the parametamor- phic of Hercynian age of the surrounding areas. -
