It’s the first completely bilingual police comedy made in Canada—the dia- logue shifts quickly from one language to the other, though there are subtitles to help out unilingual viewers. It’s set to open on about one hundred screens nationwide on August 11. “My mother, who doesn’t speak a word of English, saw the movie without subtitles, and she understood everything,” Huard says by way of reassuring those who can’t stand subtitles, noting that there will be as few as possible. In 2003, Huard delivered a standup routine at the Genie Awards gala in Toronto. He kicked it off provocatively: “You don’t know much about our culture…And there’s not much to know about yours!” “Everyone burst out laughing,” Huard recalls. “After the gala, I understood something: Quebec and English Canada are united by their differences. If we start thinking we’re pretty much the same, it doesn’t work.” So the actor decided to write a story about two cops, a Montreal

Some observers may find this particular pair of actors a bit of an odd couple. One is a fixture at the Stratford Festival, the other at Montreal’s Just For Laughs. One spe- cializes in Shakespearean drama (see page 32), the other is a master of sketch comedy. One owned Broadway along- side Denzel Washington, and remains a hot commodity in Hollywood; the other has only taken a single stage role (Talk Radio) and has appeared only in Quebec-made films. But the moment shooting got underway, the Feore–Huard team was a solid one. “Patrick felt comfortable and confident with Colm,” says Huard’s agent, producer François Flamand. “He likes to work with solid and powerful actors, like Colm
