Last Night (1998)
Last Night (1998) Set in Toronto at an unknown date, Last Night tells the story of how a variety of intersecting characters spend their final evening on Earth. It seems the world is to end at midnight (Eastern Standard Time ) as the result of a calamity that is not explained, but which has been expected for several months. There are several scenes of an ominously glowing sun, which gets progressively larger and brighter even into the night. Some people in the film choose to spend their last evening alone, others with loved ones, others in prayer, others in public mayhem, and still others at raucous festivities. The owner of a power company Duncan (David Cronenberg ) spends the majority of his final day calling up every single one of his customers to reassure them that their heating gas will be kept on until the very end. Meanwhile, his wife Sandra (Sandra Oh ) prepares to fulfill their suicide pact when she becomes stranded with a depressed widower Patrick (Don McKellar ) preparing to die while listening to music and drinking wine on his roof, surrounded by mementoes of his recently deceased wife. The widower's best friend Craig (Callum Keith Rennie ) participates in a nearly non- stop sex marathon as he attempts to fulfill every fantasy he has ever had, at one point awkwardly asking Patrick to join him. Sarah Polley appears as Patrick's sister Jennifer; their family chooses to have a final meal together although he leaves prematurely to seek his own finale. Jackie Burroughs makes an appearance as an apparently mentally disturbed woman who jogs around announcing how much time is left before the end. -

The day after, Maria is alone doing her usual tidying when she reaches into Bing’s suit pocket and discovers an orange g-string thong. We watch her reaction and her full range of emotions morphing between disbelief, shock, anger and fear. -

Conversations with Two Canadian Film Artists By Gerald Pratley Spring 1994 Issue of KINEMA MICHELINE LANCTÔT AND COLM FEORE TALK TO GERALD PRATLEY (1) MICHELINE LANCTÔT wrote and directed wrote and directed wrote and directed Deux Actrices (Two Can Play), with Pascale Bussières, Pascale Paroissien, Louise Latraverse, François Delisle, Suzanne Garceau; a drama of re-conciliation between two estranged sisters, the charm and intrigue of which soon becomes a nightmare, with the actual narrative being interspersed with real-life scenes of the two actresses at work.(1) Pratley: Ms. Lanctôt, what inspired you to film this subject in a somewhat unusual way? Lanctôt: It came about from an idea I had a long time ago. I teach ”Directing Actors” at Concordia University in Montréal -- I always had trouble explaining what ”character” is on a screen to my students, and how actors approach a character. And I had long been tempted by the notion of doing something involving an actor and his character to try -- not to illustrate or demonstrate -- but just get the feeling of what the relationship is between an actor and a character. That was 10 years ago. And then in one of my classes I had this woman, who was a student of mine, whose face was very interesting, and the idea came to me that I should put her in the same film with Pascale Bussières and that I should involve them as actresses. It evolved pretty much from that woman and the idea of a character that she gave me and the situation that came out of it. -

ABSTRACT This dissertation presents a study of Chinese diasporic narratives from Canada and Australia and examines the formation and negotiation of diasporic cultural identity and consciousness. Drawing upon theoretical discussions on diasporas in general, it investigates how the Chinese diaspora is imagined and represented, as a visible minority group, within the context of the multicultural nation state. This dissertation begins with a taxonomy of the modes of explaining diaspora and offers three ways of theorising diasporic consciousness. In analysing the filmic and fictional narrative forms of the Chinese in Canada and Australia, the practices of cultural self- representation and of minority group participation and enjoyment of the nation are foregrounded in order to advance critical analysis of the Chinese diaspora. While taking into account the heterogeneity of the imagined diasporic Chinese community, this study also contends that the formation and negotiation of diasporic consciousness and diasporic cultural identity politics is strongly and invariably affected by the multicultural conditions and policies of their host countries. -

Read the book by Stephen King. 3. Watch the episode “Destiny”, our first season cliffhanger. 4. Watch Frank Capra’s Meet John Doe. 5. Watch Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. Some don’ts: 1. Although Johnny should help someone in most every story, we don’t want this to become “Touched by an Angel”. We must find interesting, unique and fresh ways to tell stories. No preaching please. Find the unexpected twist. 2. Don’t pitch story arcs that run multiple episodes. What we need from you are self-contained stories. 3. We do not want to hear any pitches based on previously seen material -- whether film or television. Those kinds of story ideas occur to everybody -- including The Dead Zone staff. Johnny Smith is a fresh and unusual character, never before seen on television. We want fresh and unusual story concepts that likewise have not been seen on television. If it can be said of an idea "Star Trek did that" -- or "Buffy" or "The X-Files" or "Twilight Zone" -- then that is not an idea you should pitch.
