Hendrick Pannebecker, the first of the name in Pennsylvania, was born in rural Generation 2 (con't) Germany, probably in Flomborn about the 21st day of March , 1674. He is a probable son of Johannes Pfannebecker, but there is no record of him in Germany. Hendrick arrived in Philadelphia, PA on September 2, 1698. He was one of those who sought an asylum from religious persecution and a new field for advancement in Pennsylvania. William Penn made several trips to Germany to recruit families to stock his Pennsylvania colony and Hendrick may have accompanied Penn to America during one of these trips. He was living at Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1699, and probably in that year was married to Eve Umstat, daughter of Hans Peter Umstat and granddaughter of Nicholas Umstat who died at Krefeld on October 4, 1682. She arrived aboard the Francis and Dorothy,on October 12, 1685 (with her parents and siblings; Johannes and Anna Margaretta). Hendrick moved in 1702 to Skippack & Perkiomen Twp., which was primarily a Mennonite settlement. His wife and most of his children were Mennonites, but Hendrick had connections with the Reformed Church. Hendrick was a surveyor for William Penn and laid out most of the early roads in upper Montgomery County. Hendrick served as the attorney for Matthias Van Bebber for the sale of the lands of the latter in Bebber township and he later bought land in the township and became, along with Van Bebber and Lodowick Christian Sprogell, one of the three Dutch patroons of Pennsylvania. Hendrick, in addition to being a surveyor and attorney, had a library of many books, understood three languages - Dutch, German, and English, owned seven thousand acres of land, was a skilled mathematician, was a soundly educated person, and was a member of the tile-bakers guild. He signed his name Hendrick and Henry. He wrote in German, also in broken English with Dutch elements. He was living in Limerick, Pennsylvania, on December 11, 1745 with his son, Adolph, but later returned to Skippack where he died on the 4th day of April, 1754, aged eighty years and about two weeks.
