Who Shoulder the Burdens? A spring issue of the now defunct American Magazine once carried a pointed short by the editor. Two paragraphs gave the setting. "Years ago, walking through a Kansas wheat field, I remarked to the farmer on the stalks of grain that stood up straight and proud. They almost seemed to say: 'Look at me, I am important. I feed the nation.' "He smiled a twisted smile, and then said, 'I know what you mean, all right, but notice this: The stalks which seem to stand up and holler, asking you to look at them, are not the most heavily laden. The ones that carry the most grain bend over. You must look sharp to see them. To me, they always seem to say, "I'm doing my job as best I know, and that's enough for me. I ain't worried whether anybody sees me or not." ' " Think of the members of our church. Their numbers are greater today than even a year ago. Our institutions have multiplied. In consequence, the number of denominational workers has expanded. It is therefore only natural that the numbers of differing personalities among us would have grown. Within this setting it is equally natural that there would be those among us who reflect almost every type of human in the world. The seven parables of Jesus recorded in Matthew 13 also reflect on the di- versity of men and situations that characterize the kingdom of heaven. 1. "Behold, a sower went forth to sow. . . . 2. "The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field. . . . 3. "The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed. . . . 4. "The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven. ... 5. "The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field. . . . 6. "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls. . . . 7. "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a net. . . ." Of which of these seven parables about the kingdom of heaven did the disciples ask further explanation? It was the second. "Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field," they asked. Jesus had already explained that the tares must be allowed to remain with the wheat until the time of harvest, "lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them." None can say whether the wheat outnumbers the tares, or the tares the wheat, spiritually. "The Lord does not give you or anyone else the office of saying who are tares and who are wheat. We may see and condemn the faults of others, while we have greater faults which we have never realized."' We believe in the youth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They are not all perfect, and neither are all of the adults. All of us must be careful not to judge either the vocal ones or the silent ones among us. What all can do is to be "swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."' wt c
