SATURDAY, Oct. 12.—At 3 p.m. the convention was called to order by Comrade A. Negendank, of Philadelphia, in the name of the Board of Supervision. After a few remarks by him in German and by Phil. Rappaport, of Indianapolis, in English, the delegates proceeded to the election of a chairman pro tem., and Comrade Foth, of New York, was elected. On motion of Comrade Shevitch it was resolved that English be the official language of the convention, but that the minutes be kept in English and German, and that every delegate might speak any language he pleased, provided the sense of his remarks be translated into English at the request of any other delegate. In order to carry out this resolution, Rappaport was elected English secretary and Fellermann, of Hartford, German secretary. A Committee on Credentials, composed of Otto Reimer, of New York; Lother, of Pittsburg; and Mrs. Greie, of New York, was then elected, and a short recess taken, at the end of which the committee reported the following Sections to be represented: New York (German Section), by Otto Reimer, S.E. I called on many of you to PAST CHAIR help with section matters, and you kindly took on extra burdens, many of them Donald Levine thankless except, sub specie aeternitatis, insofar as they play a part in advancing socio- logical theory. The Theory Prize Committee, the Shils-Coleman Prize Committee, SECRETARY-TREASURER the Nominations Committee, and the Membership Committee have been active; the Peter Kivisto newsletter editor has kept us informed; the session organizers have assembled an impressive array of speakers and topics. And thus, we can look forward to our COUNCIL meeting in August as a time for intellectual consolidation and intellectual progress. SOCIOLOGY 316 An Introduction to Sociological Theory Fall 2002 Instructor: Gary Hamilton RETHINKING DEMOCRACY: THE ORIGINS OF AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY Purpose: There are a number of ways to introduce sociological theory to undergraduates. The way I have chosen to teach this course is to place sociological theory in the historical and social context of its creation. In so doing, I want to stress the complex relationship between the theorist and his or her intellectual environment, a relationship that has direct and indirect bearings on the theories themselves. The historical and social setting that I have selected for this course is the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century, roughly from 1880-1920. This is the time when, and the place that, sociology became an established social science discipline. I should note that many textbooks in sociological theory depict the “forefathers” of sociology as being the European triumvirate: Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Yet if we examine the history of sociology carefully, we will see that this conventional depiction is not only poor history, but also poor sociology. Even though Americans took the idea and the term of “sociology” from Europeans, sociology, as a discipline of academic study, began in the United States. It is this formative period of sociology that we will examine in this course. I believe you will find that there is much to learn about our lives and our social thinking today from this examination of an earlier time. Required Readings: There are two required readings: 1. ROSS AND P. A. SOROKIN* LAWRENCE T. NICHOLS ABSTRACT This paper argues that the theories of Edward A. Ross and Pitirim A. Sorokin have more in common than is generally realized and documents unrecognized reciprocal influences between the two scholars. Ross developed a social-psychological reading of history emphasizing exter- nally induced change; while Sorokin championed a cultural interpreta- tion grounded in the concepts of immanent causation and the principle of limits. Closer examination, however, shows that Sorokin's theory of creative altruism resembles Ross's moral activism, and that his "integral culture" accords well with Ross's linear evolutionism. The complemen- tary emphases of the paradigms are consistent with the contexts in which the theorists trained: Ross expresses youthful American optimism while Sorokin articulates the stoicism of the older Russo-European civiliza- tion. -

A BRIEF CENTENNIAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RESOURCES ON THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY/ASSOCIATION1 Compiled by the Centennial Bibliography Project Committee2 American Sociological Association Section on the History of Sociology ELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION provides the ritual occasion and reinforces the intellectual rationale for collectively exploring our Cprofessional and organizational roots. To guide us on our way, we have compiled a brief bibliography of relevant materials and exemplars that explicate the early history of the American Sociological Society and – to some degree – its subsequent evolution (the line separating “history” from “current events” is not always easily drawn). Practicing extreme parsimony, we have intentionally excluded literally thousands of otherwise important and instructive published works that focus primarily on specific departments of sociology, the ideas and accomplishments of individual sociologists, the development of sociological theories, the general intellectual history of the discipline as a whole, and myriad other matters of obvious historical and disciplinary interest. We hasten to add, however, that the structure and practical scope of a much more inclusive bibliography is now under consideration and is soon to be implemented. In the interim, we provide here a small down payment: a narrowly defined set of references for selected articles – and still fewer monographs – that specifically address, in various ways, the founding era and subsequent evolution of the American Sociological Society as a professional organization. To these citations, we add lists of relevant journals, abstracts, indexes and databases, and append the locations of archival deposits for the first ten presidents of the American Sociological Society, with the hope of encouraging ever more scholarship on the early history of the ASS/ASA per se.3 Corrections and suggested additions to this bibliography, focused specifically on the history of the ASS/ASA, are welcomed by the committee. -

But I am of the opinion that sentiment reaches its higher power when it is backed by arithmetic. It is not enough to have an inspiring ideal; we must also know the conditions and means to its realization. No revolution ever rises above the intellectual level of the class by which it is achieved. In order that the movement of the proletariat may fulfill our hopes, the working class itself must be equipped with knowledge adequate to the greatness of its task.” In such words as these Lucien Sanial, a white-haired and young- hearted veteran of the Socialist and Labor movement in America, speaking at a dinner held by friends of the Rand School of Social Sci- ence, had stated the need which the institution serves. The establishment of the Rand School in 1906 was made possible by an endowment provided at the suggestion of Prof. George D. Her- ron, by the late Mrs. Carrie D. Rand, with a contributory fund added by her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Rand Herron, who showed a keen inter- est in the work until her untimely death early in 1914. The income from this fund is supplemented by tuition fees and by donations from individuals and organizations in sympathy with the purpose of the school. -

Also included is a lengthier version of Sanderson’s reply than the one published in the print edition of the newsletter. REFORMING THEORETICAL WORK IN SOCIOLOGY: A MODEST PROPOSAL Stephen K. Sanderson Indiana University of Pennsylvania Thirty-five years ago, Alvin Gouldner (1970) predicted a coming crisis of Western sociology. Not only did he turn out to be right, but if anything he underestimated the severity of the crisis. This crisis has been particularly severe in the subfield of sociology generally known as “theory.” At least that is my view, as well as that of many other sociologists who are either theorists or who pay close attention to theory. Along with many of the most trenchant critics of contemporary theory (e.g., Jonathan Turner), I take the view that sociology in general, and sociological theory in particular, should be thoroughly scientific in outlook. Working from this perspective, I would list the following as the major dimensions of the crisis currently afflicting theory (cf. Chafetz, 1993). 1. An excessive concern with the classical theorists. Despite Jeffrey Alexander’s (1987) strong argument for “the centrality of the classics,” mature sciences do not show the kind of continual concern with the “founding fathers” that we find in sociological theory. It is all well and good to have a sense of our history, but in the mature sciences that is all it amounts to – history.
