A Proposal for Staging By Gibson DelGiudice Concreta Pro Ars Copyright © August 30, 2016 1 I. ARTIST STATEMENT Based on the 1961 Richard Attenborough-produced film and the novel by Mary Hayley Bell, Whistle Down the Wind is a thoughtful study of childhood innocence and simple faith contrasted with adult cynicism. In brief, the plot follows the fortunes of a mysterious man caught between the prejudice of adults and the innocence of the young. When this stranger takes refuge in a barn on a remote farm, its owner’s three children (Swallow, Brat, and Poor Baby, in the novel and the musical; they’re renamed in the film), who’ve recently lost their mother, mistakenly believe him to be the Second Coming of Christ, and they vow to protect the stranger from the world that waits outside – the townspeople who are determined to catch a fugitive hiding in their midst. The original was set in Lancashire, England, but for the musical, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Jim Steinman, together with Patricia Knop and Gale Edwards (co-book writers with Webber), reset the original story in America’s deep South (specifically, Louisiana) in 1959, causing the musical’s story-line to revolve in part around the time and place where the word “teenager” was invented. They also aged the oldest daughter, Swallow, up to 15, to be able to play with a “coming of age” angle where, as fantasy and reality collide, Swallow is torn between the two and begins to discover who she is and where she is going.

  • Songs by Jim Steinman
Total Eclipse of the Charts SONGS BY JIM STEINMAN For over 35 years, legendary songwriter/producer Jim Steinman (aka Little Richard Wagner) has been rocking our world like no other... BAT OUT OF HELL The classic Meat Loaf album is currently in the all-time top 3 of global record sales at 43 million and counting, and the only album in the top 20 written entirely by ONE individual. In addition to the epic title track, other great songs include Two Out Of Three ‘Aint Bad, Paradise By The Dashboard Light and Heaven Can Wait. BAT OUT OF HELL 2 The album that reunited Jim & Meat after 16 years apart, this 11 song sequel was once again written entirely by ONE individual. The huge lead single I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) earned a Grammy for ‘best rock vocal’ and helped launch the album to global sales exceeding 14 million. Other mini-operas on the album include Rock & Roll Dreams Come Through, Life Is A Lemon & I Want My Money Back and the epic that ‘out epics’ everything else… …Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are. TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART Taken from the Steinman produced album Faster Than The Speed Of Night, this 1983 worldwide smash for Bonnie Tyler hit # 1 in the US & UK, with global sales now exceeding 9 million. The power ballad to end all power ballads…’turnaround bright eyes’! IT’S ALL COMING BACK TO ME NOW Written whilst under the influence ofWuthering Heights, this US # 1 for Celine Dion earned Jim the BMI ‘song of the year’ award in 1998.

  • Rock 'N' Roll Dreams Come Through: R.I.P. Jim Steinman
Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreams Come Through: R.I.P. Jim Steinman As a kid I hated music like Meat Loaf. I thought it was pompous and overdone, and I never liked having to hear that stupid “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” song at every wedding. It wasn’t till years later that I was reading a review of a Meat Loaf concert that it all clicked and I realized the genius of Meat Loaf and of his songwriter, Jim Steinman. If the record label told him couldn’t have seven choruses in a song, Steinman put nine choruses in. He curb-stomped the idea of the 3-minute, radio-friendly pop song. In that respect, Steinman was more punk than Fugazi. Everything he did had great lyrics and dramatic storylines, and went against what pop songs are supposed to be. In addition to working with the Loaf, Steinman wrote the hits “Total Eclipse of The Heart” for Bonnie Tyler and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” for Celine Dion. Sadly, Steinman recently passed away in Connecticut. But through his music, he will live forever. The Living Pins — Freaky Little Monster Children EP It’s normal for bands to take a little time after their debut and second release. In the case of Austin psych-rockers The Living Pins, that little time translated into a quarter of a century. Was it worth the wait? I just hope nobody was holding their breath. Freaky Little Monster Children is like a basket of shiny psych-rock nuggets. “Jaguar” is fueled by a guitar riff reminiscent of “Honkey Tonk Women” with a chorus that sounds like ’80s UK alternative rock on acid.

BAT OUT OF HELL 2100 BY JIM STEINMAN AN EXTENDED TREATMENT “BAT OUT OF HELL 2100” TITLE CARDS: THE YEAR 2100 SOMEWHERE IN WHAT USED TO BE THE ISLAND OF MANHATTAN BUT WHICH SOMEHOW CHANGED... into something else... PROLOGUE: (No music at all) FADE IN: INT: A MYSTERIOUS BEDROOM (What seems to have once been a perfect bedroom for a fairy tale princess. Whites and pinks and lavenders, flowing satins and silks. Huge windows, lush layered curtains and drapes. A massive canopied bed. But now there is a pervading sense of gradual decay and encroaching ruin. Shadows loom, dust whirls, and intricate webs insinuate themselves into the patterns of the walls and floor corners. Fabrics are torn. Wood is cracked. Glass is chipped. Things are lost. It doesn’t really seem to be a room where anybody lives-- it has the slightly unreal, frozen quality of a museum exhibit that has recently been left a bit too unattended... After moving through the room we come to a woman standing close to one of the largest open windows -- There are sepulchral clouds over the moon and in the slats of light that filter through it is impossible to see her very clearly. She stands totally still, as she brushes her long golden hair, some of which hangs out over the window ledge. She looks up and out and we do too, taking in the hazy outlines of a strange city skyline -- it seems both somewhat futurist and medieval, though so much is obscured by spirals of thick multi-colored smoke and plumes of what seems to be glittering black and gold ash.

Perren, Kay Losey, Jeff Popko, Dinah Ouano Perren, Allison Piippo, Lauryn Gallo Grammaring Along: Teaching Grammatical Bundles through Song Sara Okello Allison Piippo Wendy Wang Eastern Michigan University Abstract Music is a universal language and can be instrumental in second language teaching and learning. In this paper, we report on a materials development project on teaching grammatical bundles through song. By incorporating music into ESL grammar instruction and materials development, we provide students with the opportunity to enjoy grammatical bundles while learning to use them in meaningful and culturally enriching contexts. Introduction From the debate on “to teach or not to teach grammar” in the early 1980’s to our recent discussion on “how to teach grammar,” we have seen a dramatic pedagogical shift in ESL grammar instruction. By introducing the concept of grammaring, Larsen-Freeman (2003) challenges the traditional practice of teaching grammar as an area of knowledge and emphasizes the importance of teaching grammar as a skill. Larsen-Freeman (2003) defines grammaring as “the ability to use grammar structures accurately, meaningfully, and appropriately” (p. 143). This focus on form, meaning, and use can help students develop grammaring skills that they need in order to be able to communicate effectively. One of the pedagogical principles in teaching grammar proposed by Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999) is that the most frequently occurring structures should be dealt with first.
