We have athletes, scholars, theatre progressives, metal heads, and far too many more to write down in the little space I have. The point is that life is filled with different walks of life, and perhaps that’s what I en- joy most about the Kaleidoscope. Within these pages, you, dear reader, will find people who’ve gained and lost, found joy and pain. You’ll find works of the sur- real, and still ones of reality. I give thanks to those who helped piece together the many to present something whole, for that is the heart of the Kaleidoscope. -

OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We Can’T Imagine a More Perfect Show to Give Our 2016–2017 Season a Great Launch (If You’Ll Pardon the Pun)
OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. It’s a season we’re extremely proud and excited to share with all of you. DOUGLAS GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. We’re also proud to welcome the outstanding creative team that has made October Sky a reality. Director/choreographer Rachel Rockwell is an artist whose work we’ve long admired, whose skill in staging is matched by her deft touch with actors. She’s truly a perfect fit for this heartwarming and triumphant show. -

Ars Pro Concreta
A Proposal for Staging By Gibson DelGiudice Concreta Pro Ars Copyright © August 30, 2016 1 I. ARTIST STATEMENT Based on the 1961 Richard Attenborough-produced film and the novel by Mary Hayley Bell, Whistle Down the Wind is a thoughtful study of childhood innocence and simple faith contrasted with adult cynicism. In brief, the plot follows the fortunes of a mysterious man caught between the prejudice of adults and the innocence of the young. When this stranger takes refuge in a barn on a remote farm, its owner’s three children (Swallow, Brat, and Poor Baby, in the novel and the musical; they’re renamed in the film), who’ve recently lost their mother, mistakenly believe him to be the Second Coming of Christ, and they vow to protect the stranger from the world that waits outside – the townspeople who are determined to catch a fugitive hiding in their midst. The original was set in Lancashire, England, but for the musical, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Jim Steinman, together with Patricia Knop and Gale Edwards (co-book writers with Webber), reset the original story in America’s deep South (specifically, Louisiana) in 1959, causing the musical’s story-line to revolve in part around the time and place where the word “teenager” was invented. They also aged the oldest daughter, Swallow, up to 15, to be able to play with a “coming of age” angle where, as fantasy and reality collide, Swallow is torn between the two and begins to discover who she is and where she is going. -

Ellisandra, a weather spirit who hopes to become Frost Queen, takes Faith, a frazzled mother, on a journey of imagination. They first meet the Snow Maiden, a beautiful woman who can only live during winter, in a legend from Russia. Tempesta, a stormy weather spirit who also seeks the title of Frost Queen, follows with her own Native American tale from Minnesota. It’s about a young poet at odds with a warrior lifestyle and his encounter with a Great White Bear. The tales are threaded together with an Eskimo story about the Northern Lights. The characters are a wonderful mix of humans, spirits, mischievous snowflakes and sparkling northern lights. Suggested music adds a grace note to creating the perfect winter solstice program. This play promises winter enchantment for all. -
