    Bengalis Thousand Years 8670/ 021116 The BengAlis: A ThousAnd YeArs Jawhar Sircar The last few days of a century that also happen to be at the end of a whole millennium, are bound to stir a strange excitement in even the most placid person. The two most expected feelings that hold their sway can perhaps be summarized as: introspection and expectation — drawing a balance sheet of the past as also trying to gauge what the future holds. Such an exercise can cover not only a single person or his immediate concerns; it may as well cover his locality, his state or nation and may be stretched to entire humanity. The constraints of my acquaintance and knowledge hardly qualify me to scan any group higher or bigger than my own people: the Bengalis. Even in this, my limitations now plague me more than my enthusiasm to try out such a review — but these notwithstanding; the sheer thrill of initiating an animated adda on the subject overpowers me. At the beginning, let me make it clear that I do not have the audacity to try to cover a thousand years in just a few pages: hence I will concentrate only on certain significant periods or issues, for the sake of presenting a viewpoint. So let us begin: are the Bengalis a thousand years old? Or even more? Historians tell us about our history during the Pala- Sena period, which would give us about 1250 years to be proud of, but if we include the great Sasanka, we could be share-holders in a great concern that goes back fourteen centuries.

    Political Economy of Idenity Formation, 1890- 1910: Class and Community in Colonial Punjab * Haider Ali Agha Abstract This paper analyses the rise of Muslim communal consciousness from the perspective of class conflict between different religious communities of this region. Punjab, being a Muslim majority province of British India, had agricultural and pastoral economy, notwithstanding the fact that colonial projects such as building of railways and canal colonies later radically altered pre-capitalist economic structure. British political and legal institutions along with these projects played a role in shaping and formation of group identity although it could not transform the consciousness which was distinctive of agrarian-pastoral society. The kind of nationalism which originated and developed on soil of the Punjab was professedly of religious nature. In the social milieu, rival religious communities vied for political and economic dominance. This paper seeks to explore the relation between class interest of landed elites and Muslim nationalist consciousness. The idea of religious nationalism, both among Hindus and Muslims, was developed and exploited by powerful elites representing economic interests of different classes to strengthen their political position in the Punjab. The paper also analyses how economic structure built by colonial state sharpened the antagonism between social classes of Muslim and non-Muslim 106 Pakistan Vision Vol. 17 No. 2 communities which eventually led to idea of Muslim separatism in the Punjab. Introduction This rise and growth of consciousness of Muslims as a distinct community in the Punjab has been a focus of researches by eminent native and foreign historians. Most of those, who conducted the research on this area, have either studied this phenomenon as the product of pre-existing communal fault lines or from a perspective of colonial policy of divide et impera.

    FERDINANDO SARDELLA Religious experiments in colonial Calcutta Modern Hinduism and bhakti among the Indian middle class alcutta, 1874: it was one hundred and nine years since the British East India CCompany had taken possession of Bengal, sixteen years since the British Raj officially took over its rule and seventy-three years before Indian inde- pendence.1 A vast and ancient civilisation lived under the rule of the inhabit- ants of a small North Atlantic island, who had managed to project their cul- ture, their religion—and their economic interests—into almost every corner of the globe. It was a time when India was the jewel in the crown of the British Raj and Calcutta had been transformed into a Eurasian metropolis second only to London itself. 1874 was also the year when Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī, a Vaishnava of the devotional (bhakti) school of Chaitanya (1486–1534), was born; he died sixty-three years later in 1937. The span of his lifetime was en- trenched in circumstances and events that occurred in and around the city of Calcutta and came to shape the foundation of what is generally known as ‘modern Hinduism’ (the term ‘Hinduism’ will be discussed more in detail at the end of the chapter). For this reason, these years will serve as a suitable focus for this chapter.2 The year 1874 came round at a time of transition in India, when events that began more than a century earlier had started to produce novel patterns of change. Hamid Husain Assistant Professor, Department of History, Zakir Husain Delhi College, University of Delhi, Delhi, India Abstract The Mahalwari system was one of the three major land revenue settlements of British colonial India introduced under the administration of East India Company. It was the last land settlement experimented by the company administration and expected to be an improvement over both the previous working settlements. The idea and proposal of Mahalwari system was first given by Holt Mackenzie, then the territorial secretary of the Board of Revenue, in his famous and detailed minute of 1st July 1819. The advice of Mackenzie’s minute was finally incorporated in the regulation VII of 1822 and became the basis of Mahalwari system. The Institutions of Lamberdars, Tehsildars and Patwaris played a very important and crucial role in the operation of the Mahalwari System of the land revenue settlement. A Lambardars was a village chief or head means the holder of a number of villages in the collector’s list of persons primarily responsible to bring in the land revenue of the village or a section of a village. He was usually a landlord or a zamindar, a taluqdar, or a proprietor or a patel. He was an official headman who had some authorized power in a Mahal.

Many of these Sikhs shaved their heads, freely smoked tobacco and hashish and were not particular about maintaing the five external symbols of the faith. In the absence of a centralized church and an attendant religious hierarchy, heterogeneity in religious beliefs, plurality of rituals, and diversity of life styles, were freely acknowledged. A pilgrimage to the Golden Temple could be supplemented with similar undertakings to the Ganges at Hardwar or the shrine of a Muslim saint. Attending seasonal festivals at Benares or Hardwar was in no way considered a transgression of prevailing Sikh doctrines, whatever teleological studies may like to assert today.

    Asian Studies Review September 2011, Vol. 35, pp. 373–395 Dreaming of a Golden Bengal: Discontinuities of Place and Identity in South Asia REECE JONES* University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Abstract: This article analyses five different representations of the homeland category ‘‘Bengal’’. The region of Bengal was partitioned twice in the twentieth century and imagined in a multitude of forms at different historical moments. The article describes the conditions that allowed different territories and peoples to crystallise as ‘‘Bengal’’ and ‘‘the Bengalis’’, and investigates why some versions of the Bengali homeland proved durable as others faded away. Rather than asking who is the real Bengali and where is the real Bengal, it investigates how particular identity categories become popularly practised and why particular images of the homeland come to be perceived as true, legitimate and authentic. It concludes that homeland categories are never fixed and finalised, but are rather always in a process of becoming, and are contested, reimagined and redefined as socio-political contexts change. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Rabindranath Tagore’s Syncretistic Philosophy * and the Persian Sufi Tradition Leonard Lewisohn Preface Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) has been praised by a number of Bengali Muslim authors for his sympathetic portrayal of Islamic concepts and ideals, and it is well known that some of his works of prose and verse were influenced by Persian poetry and Sufism. Tagore’s father knew Persian and could recite the poetry of Ḥāfiẓ (d. 1389) by heart. Tagore himself was also deeply influenced by the Persian classical poet. In the last decade of his life, Tagore described his admiration for the great Persian Sufi poets, visiting the tombs of Ḥāfiẓ and Sa‘dī in Shiraz. In this essay, I will discuss the spiritual milieu of the Persianate culture of nineteenth and early twentieth century Bengal in an attempt to shed light on the extent of the influence of Persian Sufi ideas on this milieu in general and Tagore in particular.
