In it you’ll find a wide variety of (pop)music organisations from the Euregion part of Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands. Pop in Limburg (NL), PXL-Music (BE) and popNRW (DE) all endorse the significance of a strong Euregional cooperation and extension of collective projects. They reinforce the professionalization and internationalisation of talented bands, musicians, DJs & producers and their professional entourage from the Belgian and Dutch provinces of Limburg, Liege and North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. In 2018 these three organisations introduced the Euregion Music Exchange programme, which gave three talented popmusic acts the chance to cross the border and perform for new audiences. This provided the possibility to – among other things – extend networks and learn how the pop sector operates abroad. To sum up the main goals of this programme: • Creating an exchange between musicians of the regions Dutch Limburg, Belgian Limburg and the German part North Rhine-Westphalia. • Introducing and acquainting the participators with each others pop culture. • Exchanging information and influencing each other creatively on a musical, artistic and professional level. • To gain knowledge about the functioning of the pop field in different regions. • To create and extend an Euregional network with relevant music and business contacts. • To stimulate a (long lasting) collaboration between the three participating acts, originating from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, which contributes to new chances and possibilities across the borders for all acts. And now we’re delighted to present the third edition of our Guide. It includes a large number of new venues and festivals. Like the first two editions, this publication undoubtedly contains some errors and omissions. And because the rock & pop scene is changing constantly, guides like these soon become out of date. So let us know (*) what we’ve left out and where we’ve made mistakes. There’s always room for improvement! And let’s keep moving onwards and upwards towards closer collaboration. • Assessing and Improving Security and Privacy for Smartphone Users
Hasselt University Transnationale Universiteit Limburg Assessing and improving security and privacy for smartphone users Dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science, at Hasselt University to be defended by Bram Bonné on August 31, 2017 Promotor: Prof. Dr. Wim Lamotte Co-promotor: Prof. Dr. Peter Quax 2011 – 2017 Abstract Smartphone and other mobile device usage has increased greatly in the past years. This increased popularity has also led to a changed security and privacy landscape, with more personal devices being outfitted with a plethora of sensors that allow to track our every step, and a vastly larger attack surface than older, more static devices. This allows a variety of actors, including malicious hackers, state-sponsored entities and legitimate service providers, to have access to a large trove of mobile user data. In this dissertation, we assess the current state of privacy and security on smartphones, we create and gauge awareness of smartphone users around these issues, and we provide so- lutions to enhance security and privacy on mobile devices. To show the ease with which smartphone users’ data can be gathered surreptitiously, we describe a mechanism for invol- untarily tracking visitors at mass events making use of Wi-Fi technology, and show that this can be implemented at a low cost, allowing location tracking of 29% of visitors at a major music festival. We show how these techniques can be (ab)used in different scenarios (notably, by using the gathered data to compare different opportunistic routing algorithms that can be used for ad-hoc communication at mass events), and provide an open platform to researchers that can be used to quantify the impact and remediation rate of similar wireless protocol vulnerabilities.

  • Festival Industry and Funding Models
Festival Industry and Funding Models This research report focussed on providing an insight into the music festival industry and in particular associated business models. Industry Overview UK Music estimates that 3.9 million people attended a festival in the year 20161. There are no official counts of how many music festivals are held in the UK, however they have become increasingly popular and estimates sit at well over 500 (see further sources). As there are many different forms of music festival such as single day festivals and bi-annual ones, it can be quite difficult to measure. One website tracking UK music festivals identifies there are 116 music festivals in the period of June 2018-2019 in the South West alone2. Due to the many music festivals in operation at present, one challenge that those in the industry face is market saturation. This has several potential consequences attached, primarily making it more difficult to sell tickets. Additionally, the associated costs such as hiring musicians, venues and catering also become higher as competition increases3. One of the ways the success of a music festival can be measured is through music tourism; non-local people travelling to attend a festival. Money is both injected into the festival and local economy from attendees that would otherwise not have been in the location. Music tourists contribute to the local economy both directly, through purchasing tickets and spending money at the festival, and indirectly such as through travel, accommodation and spending in the local economy. This value is distributed differently around the UK, with hubs like the South East and the South West having a greater share of music tourists than areas like the North East.

  • Manifestation of Real World Social Events on Twitter
Radboud University Master Thesis Computer Science Manifestation of real world social events on Twitter Author: M. Van de Voort Supervisor: dr. S. Verberne Second reader: prof. dr. T.M. Heskes August 13, 2014 2 ABSTRACT Situations in which many people come together can result in very interesting and positive, lively social events. Unfortunately, large events with many people involved also include risks, ranging from small injuries to death. It would be useful if social media could be used to monitor these events, and to predict unwanted situations and casualties. To be able to know in advance how an event will develop based on information on social media, a good understanding of the relation between the development of real world events and their manifestation online is needed. In this work, we study the relationship between real world events and their online manifestation. We create a model of both the real world event and its online manifestation. We compare these two models using data about five real world social events and Twitter data about them. We determine the correlation between the online and real world model. We find several weak to moderate correla- tions between online and real world characteristics of events. The intensity, readability and sentiment of the tweets are examples of variables in the online model that show a correlation with the real world and the weekends, school holidays and position of the moon are examples of real world variables which manifest themselves on Twitter. 3 4 Contents 1 Introduction 9 1.1 Research questions . 10 1.2 Methodology . 10 2 Related Work 13 2.1 Event detection in social media .
