    Muskegon Futures: Dams & Fishes Muskegon Watershed Research Partnership Bulletin 4 Introduction Economic boon, or ecological disaster? Put ten Rogers Dam Muskegon River lovers in a room and you will un- doubtedly find takers for both of these points of view and many in between. One thing is clear, for over 150 years dams have been an integral part of the Muske- gon River ecosystem. The first major dam was built on the Muskegon main stem at Newaygo in 1854 to power a sawmill. Then came a dam at Big Rapids in 1866. The Big Rapids Dam became the river's first hydroelectric station in 1889. Next came Rogers Dam Hardy in 1906 and Croton Dam in 1907. Hardy Dam was Dam built in 1931, and last of all Reedsburg Dam near the Muskegon headwaters was built in 1940. Today Rogers, Hardy, and Croton dams lie at the heart of a sprawling hydropower operation. Together they pro- vide the regional grid with about 46,000 kilowatts of Croton Dam power, with Hardy Dam providing the majority of the generation. Despite the clear economic contributions of the hydropower dams, many people are con- cerned about their impacts on water quality and fish populations in the Muskegon River water- shed. MWRP modeling studies can provide some useful insights on both sides of the argument. O’Neal and Tracy Kolb September 29, 2014 Introduction Hardy Impoundment is located 57 miles upstream of Muskegon Lake on the Muskegon River in Newaygo County. The Muskegon River is part of the Lake Michigan watershed and is located in the west, central portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula (Figure 1). Hardy Dam creates Hardy Impoundment and is one of three hydroelectric dams located on the Muskegon River. Hardy Impoundment is located immediately upstream of Croton Impoundment and Rogers Impoundment is located immediately upstream of Hardy Impoundment. Hardy Impoundment is 3,971 surface acres in size and has a maximum depth of about 100 feet (Figure 2). More detailed information on the fisheries and management of Hardy Impoundment can be found in the Muskegon River Watershed Assessment (O’Neal 1997). In 2006, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Fisheries Division conducted this angler survey to assess the level of angler-use, fish harvest, fish catch and non-fishing boating effort on Hardy Impoundment. This report summarizes the results of that survey. Methods The angler survey, also referred to as a creel survey, was conducted from April 1 through October 31, 2006 The impoundment was broken into two sections, north and south, for the angler survey and only one section was evaluated during any one survey day.     Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Division Muskegon River Fishing Access Site Information This document provides angler access site information for the entire mainstem of the Muskegon River, from the headwaters at Higgins Lake to Lake Michigan at Muskegon (Figure 1). Primarily public access sites are included (may not be a complete list).The site information is separated into river sections from Muskegon upstream to Higgins Lake and includes the types of fishing and directions to the site, with GPS coordinates and internet links when available. The county location provided for each site can be used to obtain travel information for the area by searching the Pure Michigan or county websites. The Muskegon River system provides very diverse fisheries in the lakes, impoundments and various river sections over the 214 miles of river between Higgins Lake and Lake Michigan. Burd, head of civil and hydraulic engineering for Consumers Power Company, Jackson, Michigan Present Owner: Consumers Energy Company (formerly Consumers Power Company), Jackson, Michigan Present Use: Powerhouse at hydroelectric generating plant Significance: The Powerhouse is part of the Hardy Hydroelectric Plant, built in the early 1930s as a link in Consumers Power Company's system of electric power generation. In designing and building Hardy, the company found a way to erect a stable, relatively high dam on Michigan's notoriously gravelly foundations, continuing its tradition of developing solutions to the problems presented by the state's geography and geology. The design process for the dam also appears to reflect a tendency in American civil engineering to favor regional practices over technology developed elsewhere. The architectural treatment of the Powerhouse and other structures at the plant reflect the company's pride in its accomplishment. Project Information: This documentation was prepared by Consumers Power Company (CPCo) in conformance with its Cultural Resources Management Plan for the Muskegon River Hydroelectric Projects (July 1995).
