I have written about many extraordinary warriors but none who gave more than Felix Sparks of the 45th “Thunderbird” Infantry Division. He experienced the full horrors of the key battles in Italy–a land of “mountains, mules, and mud,” but also of unforgettable beauty. Sparks fought from the very first day that Americans landed in Europe on July 10, 1943, to the end of the war. He earned promotions first as commander of an infantry company and then an entire battalion through Italy, France, and Germany, to the hell of Dachau. His was a truly awesome odyssey: from the beaches of Sicily to the ancient ruins at Paestum near Salerno; along the jagged, mountainous spine of Italy to the Liri Valley, overlooked by the Abbey of Monte Cassino; to the caves of Anzio where he lost his entire company in what his German foes believed was the most savage combat of the war–worse even than Stalingrad. -

These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Photo: Collection of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum GRUMMAN / EASTERNGRUMMAN AIRCRAFT AVENGER TBM-3E GRUMMAN/EASTERN AIRCRAFT TBM-3E AVENGER TORPEDO BOMBER First flown in 1941 and introduced operationally in June 1942, the Avenger became the U.S. Navy’s standard torpedo bomber throughout World War II, with more than 9,836 constructed. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. Bomber Torpedo In 1943 Grumman was tasked to build the F6F Hellcat fighter for the Navy. -

Pulaski Policy Papers Komentarz Międzynarodowy Pułaskiego ISSN 2080-8852 Warsaw, 07.01.2019 Author: Maciej Szopa Poland’s Air Force to Procure New Fighter Aircraft: the ‘Harpia’ Programme In the aftermath of the political reforms of the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Poland’s policy makers recognised a growing need to procure a new fighter jet aircraft. At the time, the Polish Armed Forces operated only Soviet-built fighter jets of several types such as MiG-21, MiG-23, Su-20 and Su-22 fighter-bombers and a newly introduced MiG-29 fighter. Given the Roughly half of the Polish Air Force consists of prospect of joining the North Atlantic obsolete fighter aircraft which are incapable of Alliance, it seemed obvious that the carrying combat operations or have very Soviet-era jets would have to be limited capabilities. The entire fleet of the gradually replaced with either brand Soviet-era fighters must be replaced in years to new or second-hand aircraft fighters come; therefore the new type of aircraft ought built in the West. As far as the latter one to be selected and procured as soon as is concerned, Poland had several possible opportunities that emerged from the reduction of troops in NATO member countries in the post-Cold War era. Purchasing F-16A/B and F/A-18C/D was one of the options; however, none of these plans had succeeded in introducing new combat aircraft by the end of the 20th century. In 2003, Poland eventually procured 36 F-16C and 12 F- 16D Block 52+ fighters produced by Lockheed Martin. -

In addition, any quotation or abstract must include full attribution. Abstract This thesis explores the life and context of Kesselring the last living German Field Marshal. It examines his background, military experience during the Great War, his involvement in the Freikorps, in order to understand what moulded his attitudes. Kesselring's role in the clandestine re-organisation of the German war machine is studied; his role in the development of the Blitzkrieg; the growth of the Luftwaffe is looked at along with his command of Air Fleets from Poland to Barbarossa. His appointment to Southern Command is explored indicating his limited authority. His command in North Africa and Italy is examined to ascertain whether he deserved the accolade of being one of the finest defence generals of the war; the thesis suggests that the Allies found this an expedient description of him which in turn masked their own inadequacies. During the final months on the Western Front, the thesis asks why he fought so ruthlessly to the bitter end. His imprisonment and trial are examined from the legal and historical/political point of view, and the contentions which arose regarding his early release. -

The core of the Polish air units fighting alongside the Allies were experienced veterans of the 1939 Invasion of Poland. They contributed to the Allied victory in the Battle of Britain and most World War II air operations. A total of 145 Polish fighter pilots served in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, making up the largest non-British contribution.[1] By the end of the war, around 19,400 Poles were serving in the RAF.[2] History After the joint German-Soviet victory in the Invasion of Poland of 1939, most of the flying personnel and technicians of the Polish Air Force were evacuated to Romania and Hungary, after which thousands found their way to France. There, in accordance with the Franco-Polish Military Alliance of 1921 and the amendments of 1939, Polish Air Force units were to be re-created. However, the French headquarters was hesitant about creating large Polish air units, and instead most Polish pilots were attached to small units, so-called keys. Only one large unit was formed, the Groupe de Chasse polonaise I/145 stationed at Mions airfield. -

We Shall Remember Them… The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum – PISM (Instytut Polski i Muzeum imienia generała Sikorskiego – IPMS) houses thousands of documents and photographs, as well as museum artifacts, films and audio recordings, which reflect the history of Poland. Materials that relate to the Polish Air Force in Great Britain form part of the collection. This presentation was prepared in May/June 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum was closed due to lockdown. The materials shown are those that were available to the authors, remotely. • The Battle of Britain lasted from the 10th July until the 31st October 1940. • This site reflects on the contribution and sacrifice made by Polish airmen during those three months and three weeks as they and pilots from many other nationalities, helped the RAF in their defence of the United Kingdom. The first exhibit that one sees on entering the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum is this sculpture. It commemorates the contribution of the Polish Air Force during the second world war and incorporates all the Polish squadrons’ emblems and the aircraft types in which they fought.. In the Beginning….. • The Polish Air Force was created in 1918 and almost immediately saw action against the invading Soviet Army during the Polish-Russian war of 1920. • In 1919 eight American volunteers, including Major Cedric Fauntleroy and Captain Merian Cooper, arrived in Poland and joined the 7th Fighter Squadron which was renamed the “Kosciuszko Squadron” after the 18th century Polish and American patriot. When the 1920-21 war ended, the squadron’s name and traditions were maintained and it was the 111th “Kościuszko” Fighter Escadrille that fought in September 1939 over the skies of Poland. -

The Brazilian Participation in World War II A thesis presented to the Faculty of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MILITARY ART AND SCIENCE Military History by Carlos José Asumpção Penteado, LtCol, Cav, Brazilian Army Fort Leavenworth, Kansas 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis examines how Brazil participated in World War II shoulder to shoulder with the Allies and what this participation brought to the country. During the 1930s, when the relationship between Brazil and Germany was improving yearly, and when it was supposed Brazil would support Germany in case of war, Brazilian leaders could drive the country to support the Allies cause, mainly the United States of America, allowing this country to set aerial bases in Brazilian North East region, in order to facilitate a connection with North of Africa. Moreover, the option in sending a Brazilian Expeditionary Force (BEF) to fight for the Allied in Italy was one of the most important decisions in Brazilian history. It was the first time that Brazil would take part in a war away from South America. The BEF did its best to well represent Brazil, overcoming several difficulties since its preparation and eventually, showing the Brazilian soldiers could fight as equal as the best soldiers in that war. Brazilian participation is almost unknown by countries away from South America, even here in United States; however, this participation was responsible for several transformations in Brazilian's nation powers. After the war, Brazil became the most powerful and wealthy country in South America.
