Minna Wu The Shandong region has been of considerable interest to the study of ancient China due to its location in the eastern periphery of the central culture. For the Western Zhou state, Shandong was the “Far East” and it was a vast region of diverse landscape and complex cultural traditions during the Late Bronze-Age (1000-500 BCE). In this research, the developmental trajectories of three different types of secondary states are examined. The first type is the regional states established by the Zhou court; the second type is the indigenous Non-Zhou states with Dong Yi origins; the third type is the states that may have been formerly Shang polities and accepted Zhou rule after the Zhou conquest of Shang. On the one hand, this dissertation examines the dynamic social and cultural process in the eastern periphery in relation to the expansion and colonization of the Western Zhou state; on the other hand, it emphasizes the agency of the periphery during the formation of secondary states by examining how the polities in the periphery responded to the advances of the Western Zhou state and how local traditions impacted the composition of the local material assemblage which lay the foundation for the future prosperity of the regional culture.

The research questions are who are slandered, why are the targets slandered, and how. The answering of the questions will primarily rely on textual studies, accompanied by an exploration of the tradition of “slandering” in the literati’s world, as well as a look at Luo Yin’s career and experience as a persistent imperial exam taker. The project will advance accordingly: In the introduction, I will examine the concept of “slandering” in terms of how the Chinese literati associate themselves with it and the implications of slandering or being slandered. Also, I will try to explain how Luo Yin fits into the picture. Chapter two will focus on the studies of the historical background of the mid-to-late Tang period and the themes of the essays. Specifically, it will spell out the individuals, the group of people, and the political and social phenomenon slandered in the essays.

This report, based on papers written by China experts for this CNA project, explores that decision and the implications it has for the United States. It analyzes Chinese thinking on what a maritime power is, why Beijing wants to become a maritime power, what shortfalls it believes it must address in order to become a maritime power, and when it believes it will become a maritime power (as it defines the term). The report then explores the component pieces of China’s maritime power—its navy, coast guard, maritime militia, merchant marine, and shipbuilding and fishing industries. Abstract As the Tang dynasty rose to power and expanded into the present-day provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, an endemic problem of troublesome frontier officials appeared along the border prefectures. Modern scholars have largely embraced Chinese historical scholarship believing that the lawlessness and remoteness of these southwestern border regions bred immoral, corrupt, and violent officials. Such observations fail to understand the southwest as a dynamic region that exposed assigned border officials to manage areas containing hardship, war, and unreceptive aboriginal tribes. Instead, the ability to act as an “effective” official, that is to bring peace domestically and abroad, reflected less the personal characteristics of an official and rather the relationship these officials had with the local native tribes. Evidence suggests that Tang, Tibetan, and Nanzhao hegemony along the southwestern border regions fluctuated according to which state currently possessed the allegiance of the native tribesmen. As protectors and maintainers of the roads, states possessing the allegiance of the local peoples possessed a tactical advantage, resulting in ongoing attacks and raids into the border prefectures by China’s rivals.

Evelyne MESNIL 1. Introduction In documents from the Tang (618-907), Five Dynasties (907-960) and Northern (960-1127) and Southern Song (1127-1279), the Monastery Dashengcisi 大聖慈寺, is a recurrent theme in relation to politics as well as religion and art history. Its tremendous scale and crucial role, not only in Shu 蜀 (modern Sichuan Province), the strategic region in which it is located, but throughout the Chinese Empire is clearly documented. Nevertheless, between the 13th and 15th centuries nearly all of its treasures vanished, and its restoration and study were long neglected. Only recently has awareness of its cultural value re-emerged and has it become the object of renewed interest and research. In 1981, its vestiges were classified as Protected Cultural Properties. Although its restoration and study of its cultural, political and religious significances were long neglected, a few researchers have begun to analyze its various aspects. The most extensive work of Wang Weiming’s 王衛明 takes mainly a philological, iconographic and aesthetic approach to its Buddhist paintings. While working on my doctorate on Shu Kingdom painting, I became particularly interested in this monastery, because it was one of the most important depositories of that era. The present study analyzes the degree of involvement of three main protagonists; politicians, the Buddhist community and artists, focusing on the polyvalent overlapping function of the Dashengcisi and its paintings as well as on political instrument, and doctrinal support, the paintings being the interface.
