Introduction Congratulations on being selected to take part in Onward Israel and Olami’s Summer jInternship 2020 session in Jerusalem! This program is hosted by Ignite and organized by jInternship. This unique and innovative program is a hybrid of life skill learning and professional development. We hope you will keep in mind that your internship has been secured through much effort, networking and administrative work. This opportunity is a privilege. You were selected because of the talents and potential that were apparent from your interviews and resume as well as high recommendations we received from your campus rabbi/other references. Based on this, we have great confidence that you will live up to the high expectations we and your host-company have for you. This Guidebook will give you an overview of this carefully designed and powerful program. We are confident that the experience will help you reach new heights personally and professionally. 2. Message From the Executive Director Greetings, We’re all looking forward to a productive, enjoyable and life-changing summer. jInternship’s dedicated faculty is here to help, teach and inspire you. The unique combination of Ignite and jInternship is the ideal balance of developing your personal growth while expanding your professional abilities and enjoying our beautiful homeland, Israel. It is our goal to encourage you to explore yourself, your life, your profession, and Israel in a deep and meaningful way like never before while providing you with the means to do so. We are looking forward to having a great summer experience together. Sincerely, Ruvein Katz, Director 3. Your Professional Work Experience Since most students will work for different host companies, it is not in the scope of this Guidebook to discuss specific requirements for time spent at your professional internship. In general, you should discuss the requirements for the internship with your supervisor and your Internship Coordinator (Bashi Rosen, Ariella Abbo, Devorah Sher, Mordy Twersky, Aviva Cohen, Yael Perlmutter, Shana Segal, etc). © jInternship Summer 2020 Upon arrival in Israel, you will be given an internship-packet that includes information such as the contact information of your supervisor, directions to your internship, bus routes, proper attire, an overview of the work culture in Israel, etc. Make sure you understand clearly what their expectations are for you and please feel free to ask your Internship Coordinator any questions you might have. It’s recommended that you convey to your host company what you hope to accomplish during the internship in one of your first meetings with them. If you have any problems with your internship, you should immediately be in touch with your Internship Coordinator. It is her job to make sure that things run smoothly. The entire Ignite and jInternship teams are committed to making your summer experience a total success - your open communication with our staff is key to accomplishing this goal. 4. College Credits The jInternship program is not currently accredited for college credits. However, many universities will offer credits for internships done through non-accredited programs, so long as the internship is supervised. Several participants have done this in the past. The jInternship team is happy to work together with your host-company’s supervisor to assist you in receiving college credits for your experience. Please tell your Internship Coordinator before the program starts if you are interested in this arrangement. More importantly, make sure you contact the appropriate department at your university and that you understand all the requirements you will need to fulfil to receive college credits. 5. Overview of Ignite University is a time to prepare for life. Students want to experience different opportunities in the job market and build up a resume, they want to see the world and they want to deepen their understanding of life and Judaism. Ignite is offering an innovative and unique approach to Jewish learning, Jewish living and career preparation: Why not do them all at once? Enjoy all three in the Ignite Program Students in the Ignite jInternship program spend 8 weeks in Jerusalem dividing their time between experiencing Jerusalem, personalized internships and learning about life. The majority of the program is the internship phase, where students work 9 AM - 5 PM Sun, Mon, Wed & Thurs. Tuesdays will be Jewish classes and programming, group bonding, one-on-ones with staff, and/or volunteering. There will be 1 night of programming per week, plus various day trips and some select group activities with the participants on other jInternship programs! Onward Israel will also host you for a range of enriching activities. Most evenings students get to relax and enjoy Jerusalem. © jInternship Summer 2020 6. Calendar & Program Overview Ignite programming will be eye-opening and extremely beneficial to your future. The curriculum and touring has been designed with much thought and care and is expected to be very enjoyable for you from beginning to end. Participation in all Ignite programming is required, and explicit permission from the program director is required for any foreseeable absence. Lack of attendance in Ignite programming will be considered a reason for dismissal from the program and internship, and in some cases a reduction from the security deposit. Standard programming includes educational portions of the full first two weeks, and during the internship phase of the program you will be expected to attend the weekly evening sessions, as well as for the full duration on Tuesdays, and all day trips, all four group Shabbatons (including the full Onward Israel Breakout weekend), and all other specified Onward Israel events (including but not limited to: Chugim evenings, Israel Now days, weekend retreats, various follow-up sessions, etc). There is also ample free time most evenings and four free weekends. Ignite programming includes both life skills discussions as well as Jewish learning. June 14: Students travel date (if your flight falls over 2 days. If your flight arrives the same day as take off, fly June 15) June 15: Start of program & orientation - please arrive by 3 PM! June 16 – June 27: Life Skill small group discussions, Jewish learning, and touring. June 28 – Aug 5: Internship phase, interning from 9 AM - 5 PM Sun, Mon, Wed, Thurs, with Ignite learning programming on Tuesdays and one evening per week, and some required Onward Israel events (which could fall during the day or evening). Aug 6 – Aug 8: Last days together and farewell banquet. Aug 9: Program ends. Please note, the apartment will not be available from 11 AM onwards on Aug 9, so either book your flight on Aug 9 or prepare accommodation elsewhere. Each student will receive a copy of their full schedule during the Ignite orientation. 7. Housing You will be staying in a comfortable apartment in the Nachlaot neighbourhood of Jerusalem, centrally located near the Shuk. Exact apartment and entrance details will be sent to you closer to the time. The apartment is air conditioned and has heating facilities. A washing machine and wi-fi internet connection are also available. The apartment is fully furnished and will provide you with a blanket, a pillow, a set of sheets and a towel. If you require more than one set, please be advised that you should either bring an extra one from home or be prepared to purchase a set in Israel. There will be at least two students per room and many rooms will have bunk beds. © jInternship Summer 2020 Your apartment will come fully stocked with all supplies when you arrive, but when you will run out of supplies such as soap, toilet paper, detergent, etc. you will need to replenish them at your own expense. We provide a small daily stipend of 2nis/day to help towards these expenses. You and your fellow roommates will be responsible for purchasing cleaning & toiletry supplies - as well as maintaining a clean apartment. In the event that apartment cleanliness is not properly maintained, jInternship will send in a cleaning crew at the expense of the collective roommates, which is normally not necessary as most of our participants work together towards maintaining a clean apartment. 8. Board & Tuition Due to generous subsidies from jInternship, Olami, and Onward Israel - students accepted into the program receive air conditioned/heated rooms, meals, health insurance, public transport bus card, great touring around Israel and exciting classes. Students are only required to pay a minimal fee dependent upon their country of origin for their internship placement and to cover their own airfare for this exciting eight week program. When jInternship will provide catered food for various meals, it will be more than pleasing for most students - please note that if you are a very picky eater, or have strict dietary restrictions, it’s advised to inform staff in advance so they can do their best to accommodate your situation.
