For freshers, this term will represent the opening of a new chapter in your lives. I remember well the mix of emotions that accompany your first few weeks at university. Just remember that everyone is in the same boat and there are far more daunting cities than Durham! Many freshers coming to Durham for the first time will have heard of the Union, others will have not. Whatever your subject and whatever your inter- ests we are your indispensable accompaniment to Durham life. Unique to Oxford, Cambridge and Durham, the Union Society fulfils several different functions. First and foremost we provide students with the opportunity to meet, listen to and engage with a diverse range of public figures. In the past we have hosted speakers from sportsman Jonathan Edwards to scientist Robert Winston to actress Imelda Staunton. We also host debates every Friday night, with celebrity speakers coming up to Durham to debate the pressing issues of the day. In addition we represent the university in competitive student debating and provide the chance for students to hone their skills in the art of debating and public speaking in our weekly debate training sessions. Finally we provide an important university wide social environment, independent of the colleges. We have our very own bar and clubhouse 24 North Bailey, conveniently located next to the cathedral in the centre of Durham. We host regular balls and socials, widely regarded as amongst the best in Durham.

He was Vice President, International Affairs for “SISTEMA” Joint-Stock Fi- nancial Corporation, Moscow, Russia from 1998-2005. John-Michael Arnold is a Visiting Professor of International Relations at the George Washington University. This morning we are hearing from 7 Sir Richard Dalton and Sir Geoffrey Adams, who were 8 successively Britain's Ambassadors in Iran between late 9 2002 and 2009. 10 I say on each occasion that we recognise that 11 witnesses are giving evidence based on their 12 recollection of events and we, of course, check what we 13 hear against the papers to which we have access and 14 which are we are still receiving. 15 I remind each witness on each occasion that they 16 will later be asked to sign a transcript of the evidence 17 to the effect that the evidence given is truthful, fair 18 and accurate. 19 With those preliminaries, I wonder if I could ask 20 each of you to give us a thumbnail sketch, if you like, 21 of the make-up of Iran's government and power structures 22 knowing that they are complex, but it would be helpful 23 to us to learn a bit about them. 24 Sir Richard, do you want to start? 25 SIR RICHARD DALTON: I think it is easiest to think about 1 1 the power structure in Iran as a series of concentric 2 circles.
