In his capacity as the Deputy Secretary General of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), he served in the Central Executive Committee of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). Upon joining the South African government in 1997, Nkosi was posted to the SA Permanent Mission in Geneva. -

Signed: Alban Webb ABSTRACT The Second World War had radically changed the focus of the BBC's overseas operation from providing an imperial service in English only, to that of a global broadcaster speaking to the world in over forty different languages. The end of that conflict saw the BBC's External Services, as they became known, re-engineered for a world at peace, but it was not long before splits in the international community caused the postwar geopolitical landscape to shift, plunging the world into a cold war. At the British government's insistence a re-calibration of the External Services' broadcasting remit was undertaken, particularly in its broadcasts to Central and Eastern Europe, to adapt its output to this new and emerging world order. -

COMMISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES' ATTEMPT TO REFORM THE COMMON MARKET ORGANIZATION FOR WINE Tim Iannettoni* INTRODUCTION "Blood will flow if Nicolas Sarkozy does not act fast to raise the price of wine."' Such violent ultimatums are more commonly associated with religious fundamentalists than with vintners, but this statement came from a group of seven militant vintners wearing ski-masks and demonstrates the dire situation the European wine sector is facing.2 This group, called the Crav, has already vandalized local supermarkets and hijacked and destroyed a truck carrying foreign wine.3 The problem facing these and other vintners throughout Europe is that European wines are losing their competitive edge to new world wines resulting in a crippling loss in demand.4 This loss in demand is exacerbated by a record-setting wine over-production of almost 12.8 million hectoliters, or 743.6 million gallons, per year, resulting in an inconsumable wine surplus.5 Both of these factors have driven the price of wine through the floor, resulting * J.D. This is a report from a committee of MPs to Parliament. It explains their actions against the leaders of the Levellers. One of the men they arrested was John Lilburne, a key figure in the Leveller movement. What’s the background to this source? Before the war of the 1640s it was difficult and dangerous to come up with new ideas and try to publish them. However, during the Civil War censorship was not strongly enforced. Many political groups emerged with new ideas at this time. One of the most radical (extreme) groups was the Levellers. -

Feelings of disempowerment are prevalent, and policy-making is perceived as being dominated by an older generation of elites who are out of touch with the aspirations and needs of today’s youth. • External assumptions made about the risks of youth radicalization – above all, affiliation to groups such as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – often fail to reflect the more commonly expressed desire of many young people to seek ownership and agency in shaping the future of their communities and societies as active and constructive citizens. • The centralization of political power is a key driver in youth marginalization, blocking their engagement in social and political issues of interest and concern to them. ‘Top-down’ approaches to national youth policies not only fail to engage young people but also risk increasing their disillusionment. -
