By Rose Sheldon Newton The talk about Isaac Sheldon, given this summer by Elise Bernier Feeley, Reference librarian at the Forbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts, was fascinating! Isaac seemed to spring to life in the original documents of Northampton. Since that time, I have desired to know more history concerning the life and times of Isaac, Godfery, William and John. "For Righteousness sake Isaac Sheldon was chosen..." to do this and that task she said.

Before we receive the manuscript of her talk, we should be familiar with what was "current events" and know what was happening in government, business, and church. From my collection of history books, and other various references in the library, I have compiled a time line. During this study, I pulled syllabuses from several national genealogical conferences and investigated the bibliographic sources for English Research seminars. Lecturers are recommending the study of the new work: Albions Seed.1 (The first in a series of USA Cultural History.) This is a "must have" for your personal library and is now available in Publishers Paperback for under $25.00. It is the most helpful history of the USA I have found. It combines recorded history along with cultural and religious happenings. Author David Fischer shows that the main documented reason for the migration to Massachusetts was for religious purposes and once that fact is accepted, history falls into better K } perspective. If you also recall the writings of Shirley Rider on English Sheldon — Research, she advised the study the works of Charles Banks. Fischer relies on Banks in many instances. Studies of homes show English houses of this period in a certain area are like Capt. Jonathans in W. Suffield Ct.! (After reading the chapters about early CT and MA, I understand why Donna m thinks we should look toward East Anglia for Isaac documentation.) If you are interested in this subject, I guarantee you will not be able to put this book down.

James I 1603 - 1625 "2 Promised to either make conform or harry them out of the country, or worse." He allowed no further reformation in the church, he did pick a fight with the Pope over Kings power to defend laws of God in his own kingdom without interference of the Pope.

England's Need of America 3"There was special need at this time to relieve the crowded industrial conditions at home. The great demand for wool by Flemish Tapestry weavers made wool-growing very profitable in England. Therefore, Eng. landowners engaged largely in raising sheep instead of farming. The result was that one man could watch sheep where formerly many were needed to cultivate the crops, people were out of work, distress in the labor class.

1607 - Jamestown VA settlers left England, about half of these were gentlemen to make a fortune the other half mechanics and tradesmen, no farmers and no women. They were going to find gold. 5 To late to plant by the time the lazy settlers got settled, sickness enveloped them and they could hardly find people to bury the dead. 1609-10 500 more came over and the story repeated. Capt Smith died, indians took advantage and plundered. Injured, Smith went home and Capt. Dale came. Abolished the common warehouse system therefore idlers were forced to work to eat. 1634 - Isaac Sheldon: John Farmer Genealogical Register gave erroneous information about Isaac, that was borrowed by Dr. Harris. 11 12 Dr. Harris, pastor of Dorchester pub. a paper 1804 13 wherein he described the migration from Dorchester to Windsor. In a footnote he says " Of the congregation were Roger Ludlow, Esq. Thomas Stoughton, Capt. John Mason, Isaac Sheldon, Bray Rossiter, Sc several others." These 5 names appear in the same sequence, scattered though McClure's list of "others", that suggests that Dr. Harris may have taken them from that source. In McClure's list there are 17 names that appear in the Dorchester Town records, although Isaac Sheldon's name does not. Why did Dr. Harris choose to mention only those five? 1635 - 1636 Roger Williams Separatist minister of church in Salem preached that "The King had no right to grant Indian Lands in America to Colonists14 " He was threatened with deportation back to England so moved near friendly Indians. Founded Providence, RL 1647 he finalized "Providence Plantations" Charter.

1638 - Puritans from England settled on Long Island Sound. New Haven CT.

1639 - Connecticut formally set forth by adoption of "The Fundamental Orders" that tied Hartford, Windsor and Weathersfield into a unit. Georges (see 1622) received charter. Maine became a "Proprietary Colony" distinct from the royal or corporate colonies. Georges was the sworn enemy of Puritan Massachusetts. Few were attracted to Maine though there were settlements at Pemaquid, Monahegan Island, Saco and on the neck where Portland now stands. In 1677 heirs of Georges sold their share of the claims to Massachusetts and it remained a part of Massachusetts even after formation of the United States.

Charles so appreciated Sheldon siding with the church during treaty of Uxbridge in 1644, that he signed a vow to restore "all church lands and impropriations if he were restored his kingly rights.” Gilbert was entrusted with this paper and kept it 13 years. 1648 ejected as warden of All Souls - Jailed at Oxford, ordered to Wallingford Castle, refused by the governor. S5 Isaac Sheldon of Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut &. Northampton, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts ... $4.00 by S9309x322 Shirley Sheldon Rider and S4479x851 Rose Sheldon Newton, 30 pages. Derby, by J. Gardner Bartlett?" The authors present material found in the writings of Rev. Solomon Clark, James Russell Trumbull and include the chapter entitled "The Family of Isaac Sheldon" from Frank Farnsworth Starts genealogical classic, Goodwin-Morgan Ancestral Lines, because as they state "The documentation is flawless; tire writing style still fresh and worthy of emulation." The author does not discuss tire "Isaac connection", but in her Preface, she states "Because much of the very early Sheldon family information that is on tire two charts included with this report is there because of information given in 1662 by No. 10 Richard Sheldon to the Heralds during their Visitation to Derbyshire, it was thought worthy of notice on that count alone to publish the pedigree charts and his will. [Note: The numbers used in this description are not Sheldon Numbers, rather they indicate the numbers assigned by J. Gardner Bartlett in his "Tire Sheldons of Derbyshire and of New England."] 29. Gardner Bartlett's landmark study on the English origin of S5 Isaac Sheldon. Bartlett's publication was the culmination of two years of research in England. As the author notes "Debate and dissension within the Sheldon Family Association hierarchy and membership have raged ever since". Probably no publication has been subjected to more study and comment than Bartlett's work. The author lists the major objections that have been raised over the years to Bartlett's conclusions, then forcefully argues her position. 31. Tire Sheldons of Bakewell, Derbyshire, England, and Isaac Sheldon of New England $4.00 by J. Gardner Bartlett, 27 pages. This is tire reprint from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register of October, 1926, that created the debate and dissension within the Sheldon family Association hierarchy and membership since its publication. This item was originally reprinted by tire Genealogical Committee in 1962 and has been out of print for many years. Now available, it is of interest to all Sheldons and is the subject of Shirley Rider's "Defense" (item 30 above).

Gardner Bartlett's landmark study on the English origin of S5 Isaac Sheldon. Bartlett's publication was the culmination of two years of research in England. As tire author notes "Debate and dissension within the Sheldon Family Association hierarchy and membership have raged ever since". Genealogical New memberships in the SFA this year (since the 1994 Annual Meeting) total 38. This is a good increase (+18.7%) over the 32 new memberships reported last year. The number from each line is as follows; Other Data: Committee 50004 Godfrey 1 Descendants identified from new members 453 50005 Isaac 14 Descendants indentified from other members...106 S0008 John of P 11 Total descendants identified 559 Annual S0023 John of SIC ... 11 Total letters written.. ;. 78 Other (line pending) .1 Applications pending.... 2 Total .38

Report The number of letters written this past year was down dramatically to 78 versus 174 the year before. Despite this big ease in workload the number of new members increased over the number of the previous year, as mentioned above.

1994-1995 Data entry from the SFA card files and correspondence files into our computer system (SFGS) is complete with the exception of 74 cards and related correspondence records for descendants of S0046 Jonathan of the S0005 Isaac line. These are problem records for computer entry, basically because of dual (and in some cases multiple) lines for descen- dants from inter-marriages. They require work from Mark Sheldon to make them function correctly in SFA computer system. It is disappointing to report again that this whole project is not yet completed. The total number of computer records in Mark’s master KEirh M. search and reference file is 55,105 and it will probably come to somewhat over 57,000 once the project is completed. Breakdown of the completed computer records by line:

LINE SHELREF SHELDATA SHELMAR SkddoN, 50004 Godfrey 3,554 3,555 1.691 50005 Isaac 19,236 17,958 8,936 S0008 John of Providence 19,196 19,191 9,637 S0013 John of S. Kingstown 12,828 12,827 6,140 S0022 Richard 291 0 0

(Ed Note: Shelref is the reference file - where we find Sheldons, Sheldata is the file where facts are stored, Shelmar is the Marriage reference and fact file.)

It is an especially good thing that this project is so near completion because the condition of many of the original 3x5 record cards of the S0005 Isaac line is bad, with scotch tape binding dried out and separating. Many of the labels on the old correspondence file jackets sSSm dried and became detached. These file jackets have all been replaced, with headings pen- im printed on the jacket rather than with gummed labels which do no endure.

fife. All 3x5 cards and correspondence records have been re-sorted and filed by line and by Sheldon number. There were many duplicate records, mainly on 3x5 cards. All of these duplicates have been tossed out and the files now are probably in their b*st order in years.
