Quaderno 2010

the MARCHE region Discovering VADEMECUM FOR THE TOURIST OF THE THIRD MILLENNIUM Discovering THE MARCHE REGION MARCHE Italy’s Land of Infinite Discovery the MARCHE region “...For me the Marche is the East, the Orient, the sun that comes at dawn, the light in Urbino in Summer...” Discovering Mario Luzi (Poet, 1914-2005) Overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the centre of Italy, with slightly more than a million and a half inhabitants spread among its five provinces of Ancona, the regional seat, Pesaro and Urbino, Macerata, Fermo and Ascoli Piceno, with just one in four of its municipalities containing more than five thousand residents, the Marche, which has always been Italyʼs “Gateway to the East”, is the countryʼs only region with a plural name. Featuring the mountains of the Apennine chain, which gently slope towards the sea along parallel val- leys, the region is set apart by its rare beauty and noteworthy figures such as Giacomo Leopardi, Raphael, Giovan Battista Pergolesi, Gioachino Rossini, Gaspare Spontini, Father Matteo Ricci and Frederick II, all of whom were born here. This guidebook is meant to acquaint tourists of the third millennium with the most important features of our terri- tory, convincing them to come and visit Marche. Discovering the Marche means taking a path in search of beauty; discovering the Marche means getting to know a land of excellence, close at hand and just waiting to be enjoyed. Discovering the Marche means discovering a region where both culture and the environment are very much a part of the Made in Marche brand. 3 GEOGRAPHY On one side the Apen nines, THE CLIMATE od for beach tourism is July on the other the Adriatic The regionʼs climate is as and August. -
Immigrant Musicians on the New York Jazz Scene by Ofer Gazit A
Sounds Like Home: Immigrant Musicians on the New York Jazz Scene By Ofer Gazit A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Benjamin Brinner, Chair Professor Jocelyne Guilbault Professor George Lewis Professor Scott Saul Summer 2016 Abstract Sounds Like Home: Immigrant Musicians On the New York Jazz Scene By Ofer Gazit Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Benjamin Brinner, Chair At a time of mass migration and growing xenophobia, what can we learn about the reception, incorporation, and alienation of immigrants in American society from listening to the ways they perform jazz, the ‘national music’ of their new host country? Ethnographies of contemporary migrations emphasize the palpable presence of national borders and social boundaries in the everyday life of immigrants. Ethnomusicological literature on migrant and border musics has focused primarily on the role of music in evoking a sense of home and expressing group identity and solidarity in the face of assimilation. In jazz scholarship, the articulation and crossing of genre boundaries has been tied to jazz as a symbol of national cultural identity, both in the U.S and in jazz scenes around the world. While these works cover important aspects of the relationship between nationalism, immigration and music, the role of jazz in facilitating the crossing of national borders and blurring social boundaries between immigrant and native-born musicians in the U.S. has received relatively little attention to date. -

Giovanni Allevi: Undefined & Unfettered. One Night….One Place
news release Italian Cultural Institute 686 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10012 Tel. 212.879.4242 Fax 212.861.4018 email: [email protected] New York, April 21, 2006 Giovanni Allevi: Undefined & Unfettered. One Night….One Place The Blue Note—Monday, May 15, 2006, 8:00 pm & 10:30 pm In his first New York performance since two sold out shows at The Blue Note in March 2005, Italian composer/pianist Giovanni Allevi returns to the city that was the inspiration for his latest CD, No Concept (Sony BMG). Written over the course of a steamy New York summer, No Concept is as much the embodiment of a musical journey and philosophy as it is a visceral ode to the melting pot of culture, style and sound that we call New York. In the thirteen original compositions which make up No Concept, Allevi challenges himself and the listener to embrace tradition but not to be encumbered by it. The past is a base coat in the quest for a contemporary interpretation of our common human experience. As an artist, Allevi’s palette is rich and audible in the sounds and rhythms of classical, avant-garde, jazz, pop and rock traditions, but the canvas is set on end with every touch of the key. Claudia Di Meo of ANSA wrote, “his music strikes your heart, a witchcraft which leads the listener to a borderline, over a precipice made of accents….complicated metrics without ever being presumptuous….sometimes it is only a sweet caress which touches your body like the red velvet of a theatre.” Allevi’s musical journey began by stealing time, literally, at the piano. -
