It was very useful for me to make a comparison with the Italian method learned during the master course. My supervisor, Professor Falini, during the year of study, showed us her excellent work. My contribution to the work done has helped me to decide which topic I would deal with and to find the enthusiasm to develop a possible model of management for the historic centre of Porto. Most of the supporting materials for the analysis is part of a bibliographic research; although my personal preparation leads me naturally to focus on architecture component of the city system, I will shortly comment some/many of the studies developed by citizens of Porto that I have analyzed about other areas of influence such as engineering, economic, socio- anthropological, environmental, infrastructure.

He strongly questioned some approaches to knowledge and paved the way for trade with India. Following his achievements, Lisbon enjoyed a time of great prosperity that came to a sudden end following the disastrous earthquake in 1755. What we experience as an impressive city image today, especially the Baixa, was created in the 18th century. Only the Torre de Belém still reminds us of the time of great sailors and their untiring spirit of discovery. Of course, the time of individual explorations is long past, but the urge for new knowledge has remained unchanged. Today, it is a great number of people who work on the front lines with curiosity, diligence and persistence to bring about progress. They have come to Lisbon as well, to make new discoveries by sharing scientific and practical approaches. This article discusses Olympia, the painting by Édouard Manet, and its copy by Guilherme de Santa-Rita presented at the Academia de Belas-Artes exhibition inaugurated the 18th of March, 1911. I believe that Santa-Rita’s painting must occupy a significant place in art historiography in Portugal, namely the history of Portuguese modernism. The article emphasizes the reception of Olympia’s copy presented precisely the day before the 1911 Free Exhibition. Santa-Rita’s copy, regrettably forgotten nowadays, questioned Portuguese painting and the portrait genre in particular, namely their relation with human body at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the overwhelming hypocrisy of the whole society.

  • Antonio Ribeiro Sanches a Portuguese Doctor in 18Th Century Europe
Antonio Ribeiro Sanches, Vesalius, VII, 1, 27 - 35, 2001 Antonio Ribeiro Sanches A Portuguese doctor in 18th century Europe José Luis Doria Summary Antonio Ribeiro Sanches was born in Portugal in 1699 and died in Paris in 1783. After his medical studies in Salamanca, he practised for a short while in Portugal. From there, he fled from the Inquisition, never to return. He passed through Italy, England, and France, enrolling afterwards in the University of Ley den to study with Boerhaave. Through this master he was referred to the Russian tsarina to handle important medical functions. He stayed in Russia for more than 16 years, exiled afterwards to Paris, where he lived the last 36 years of his life. He wrote intensely and actively; he kept in contact with the European masters and influenced the cultural environment of his time. In medicine, he is remembered primarily by the studies he developed on venereal diseases (syphilis), and the exchange he established with Chinese medicine; by the reorganization of medical studies in Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg) and at the University of Strasburg. However his main contribution was his role in the reformation of the Portuguese University. In addition, his interests extended into cultural aspects such as the arts, social and commercial issues, politics and religion. Some of his works were included in The Methodical Encyclopaedia by Diderot and in Natural History by Buffon.

This was, perhaps, the most emblematic work of historical scholarship of the early New State. Without a shadow of a doubt, if ever there was a piece of writing that represents historical scholarship at the highest level produced in the context of a fascist dictatorship, this was it. And that is precisely what this thesis will focus on: how scholars conducted their academic activities and production within and throughout fascism.
