This conference was the kick-off event to the project ‘REGIOPARL I Regional Parliaments Lab’, an international research project located at Danube University Krems that is supported by and conducted in cooperation with Forum Morgen. REGIOPARL is a multiannual comparative research project that focuses on the role of regional actors in the EU multilevel system of governance. At the same time, it aims at contributing to the ongoing debate on the future of the EU from a regional perspective. The conference’s main objective was to open the field by gathering various ap- proaches to the definition and study of regions in Europe from several scholarly disciplines. This interdisciplinary perspective was deliberately chosen at the be- ginning of a project that is mainly located in political science. The various contri- butions to the conference clearly revealed the importance of questions related to collective identity – and regional identity in particular – when studying the mul- tifaceted role of regions within the larger political and legal framework of the EU governance system. Ursula Männle, Staatsministerin a.D., heißt die neue Vorsitzende der CSU-nahen Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung. Der bisherige Amtsinhaber, Staatsminister a.D. Hans Zehetmair, hat sein Amt nach zehn Jahren zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Mitgliederversammlung wählte heute in München den gesamten Stiftungsvorstand für die Dauer von vier Jahren neu. Die frühere Staatsministerin für Bundesangelegenheiten, Ursula Männle, führt die CSU-nahe Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung in den kommenden vier Jahren. Männle, bislang Stellvertreterin, folgt auf den früheren Kultus- und Wissenschaftsminister Hans Zehetmair, der nach zehn Jahren Amtszeit für den Vorsitz nicht mehr kandidierte. Die Mitgliederversammlung der Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung e.V. wählte heute (12. Mai 2014) turnusgemäß auch die weiteren Vorstandsmitglieder. Demnach fungieren künftig als Stellvertreter wie bislang Landtagspräsident a.D. Alois Glück und neu CSU-Europagruppen-Vorsitzender Markus Ferber. Zum engeren Vorstand zählen unverändert Bundesminister a.D. Michael Glos als Schriftführer und der frühere Vizepräsident des Europäischen Parlaments, Ingo Friedrich, als Schatzmeister. Den neugewählten Vorstand komplettieren als Beisitzer Gerda Hasselfeldt, Joachim Herrmann, Thomas Kreuzer (neu), Angelika Niebler (neu), Wilfried Scharnagl, Horst Seehofer, Edmund Stoiber, Theo Waigel und Otto Wiesheu.     Political Change and Scottish Nationalism in Dundee 1973-2012 Thomas A W Stewart PhD Thesis University of Edinburgh 2019 Abstract Prior to the 2014 independence referendum, the Scottish National Party’s strongest bastions of support were in rural areas. The sole exception was Dundee, where it has consistently enjoyed levels of support well ahead of the national average, first replacing the Conservatives as the city’s second party in the 1970s before overcoming Labour to become its leading force in the 2000s. Through this period it achieved Westminster representation between 1974 and 1987, and again since 2005, and had won both of its Scottish Parliamentary seats by 2007. This performance has been completely unmatched in any of the country’s other cities. Using a mixture of archival research, oral history interviews, the local press and memoires, this thesis seeks to explain the party’s record of success in Dundee. It will assess the extent to which the character of the city itself, its economy, demography, geography, history, and local media landscape, made Dundee especially prone to Nationalist politics. It will then address the more fundamental importance of the interaction of local political forces that were independent of the city’s nature through an examination of the ability of party machines, key individuals and political strategies to shape the city’s electoral landscape. The local SNP and its main rival throughout the period, the Labour Party, will be analysed in particular detail. The thesis will also take time to delve into the histories of the Conservatives, Liberals and Radical Left within the city and their influence on the fortunes of the SNP.

    Green Mountain CITIZEN Summer 2020 LWVVT Decries Police Killing of George Floyd The League of Women Voters of Vermont grieves the murders of George Floyd and countless other Black lives that have been tragically taken at the hands of rogue law enforcement officers who are rarely held fully accountable for their actions. We have seen people from all over the country exercising their First Amendment rights as peaceful demonstrators take to the streets demanding change. We have seen people of every race, religion, and ethnic background stand and kneel in solidarity with the Black community with the same message— Black Lives Matter. We have also seen civil unrest in some places and, sadly, acts of police violence against protestors. We must not let those images derail the fight against systemic racial injustice and inequality. The systems of oppression that have perpetuated the myth of white supremacy in our country must be dismantled if we are ever to become the nation we pledge to be—indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. As an organization whose mission is to empower voters and defend democracy, we stand in solidarity with all Black communities. The League shall do so by speaking out against racism in all forms and being committed to listening to and amplifying Black voices, and educating ourselves and our children on the historic and ongoing systemic racism that plagues this country. The League acknowledges, painfully, that America is a nation founded on racism. Therefore, all who live in this country must contribute to and participate in organizations actively working to achieve full liberation and inclusive freedom.
