YARRAVILLE CLUB WON OUTRIGHT BY 119 RUNS YARRAVILLE CLUB won the BOB BRIERLEY PERPETUAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. After a long season it is nice to be able to say that we are the premiership team for season 2013/14. The finals performances of the teams finishing third and fourth once again showed that it doesn’t matter where you finish in the final four, finals are a different game and any team can win it on their day. Going into the game we were confident that we had a strong enough team on paper to win the game with plenty of bowling depth and a solid batting line-up, however, we also understood that Strathmore had a strong bowling line-up with the likes of Tait, Phillips and Howard able to cause plenty of headaches on their day. The game turned out to be a show of bowling strength with neither team really getting on top with the bat. We were lucky enough to build a couple of crucial partnerships in the first innings to post a competitive total of 185, thanks mainly to a classy performance from man-of-the-match Konrad Kurta (46), some big hitting by Mitch Sweeney (34) and a gritty innings from our young wicket-keeper Sam Callard (29). These crucial partnerships in the first innings were probably the difference at the end of the game. Strathmore were well served throughout the game by Jack Tate (5/43 and 3/40) and captain Matthew Phillips (2/23 and 6/19), who both bowled well and gave their side a chance in both innings. Our own bowling performance was outstanding in both innings. Being able to throw the ball to any one of our bowlers and know that they are going to bowl tight and keep the pressure on is a luxury for a captain, especially when you have Matthew Boglis (2/12 and 5/22) and Craig Trounson (4/22 and 2/31) in your team. The ability of these two players to continually keep pressure on the batsmen with dot-balls and bowl wicket taking deliveries is why we were able to bowl Strathmore out for 104 and 96. The excitement when the final wicket fell is something that the entire playing group will have with them for a long time. We set out at the start of the season to make the finals and hopefully win a premiership; just like eleven other sides and to come out successful at the other end is an amazing feeling. Finally, I’d like to thank Altona North CC for hosting us over the four days and the umpires Alan Biggs and Warren Duncan for their commitment to the game throughout the grand final. The pain of last year's grand final defeat was still burning up the players, so to have the opportunity to play off again we didn't want to let this slip. Winning the toss and batting things didn't go to plan early on with us losing 3 wickets within 2 runs to be 3/21. The bowling was tight and the fielding was good building pressure on us. Enter young Dylan Smith (52) and Raju Jagodage (39) who turned the game back our way with a 95 run partnership. This partnership was the most important I believe in the match. Once again we lost 2 wickets being both set batsmen without adding to the scores to leave us 5/116. Rain stopped play with 17 overs left on day 1 with us sitting 5/163 and the game in the balance. Day 2 started strong without the loss of a wicket and the second new ball was taken and a partnership of 130 put us in a strong position with Modera Perera making 56. A few wickets fell again and we were sitting at 9/282 slowly getting ready to field. With another great unbeaten partnership of 87 for the last wicket with Chris Kenney (79 n.o) and Liu Palmer (17 n.o) enabling us to declare with 8 overs left in the day and a score of 9/369. Jesse James bowled fantastic for PEGS and tried hard both days and was rewarded with 6 wickets in his 37 overs. With an attacking field we managed to sneak 2 wickets before the close of play to have PEGS 2/7 at the end of the first weekend giving us the upper hand. Day 3 began with a few dropped chances but we seemed to pick up a wicket or 2 in each session. The bowlers did a great job on a fantastic wicket and didn't give too many bad balls to hit at all. A few partnerships took place but we managed to get a wicket each time they started to take control and at the end of day 3 we had them 9/150. Rasika Batepola batted extremely well and made a well deserved 54. A very frustrating start to day 4 as somehow the sprinklers were on overnight and both ends of the square were wet which meant a delayed start. Obviously both captains didn't agree on starting and players started becoming quite tense and frustrated as we wanted to get on and finish the job. Finally umpires decided it was OK to start and we did at 2:35pm. 2 overs later Chris Kenney took the last wicket caught at slip by Adam Carton which game us the victory. A great effort from all involved with Adam Carton picking up 3 wickets, Modera Perera 2 and the rest shared. The club should be proud as this will be our first time up in Senior Division. A mention to the 2's who also made the grand final but unfortunately fell short on the final game. Thanks to PEGS for a hard fought game and congratulations on a fantastic season especially coming up a grade. As much as you will be disappointed, it is an amazing season and you should feel proud of yourselves. In particular well done to Jesse James who took 6 wickets with a sore shoulder and came in over after over bowling in great areas. Also well batted to Rasika Batepola who made 54 and looked the real danger to us. Thanks to both umpires Gary Houston and Steve Herman for their work as you kept things in control as the game was played hard but with great respect from both sides. Also finally thanks to Spotswood for again providing a fantastic wicket and great facilities over the 4 days. Umpires : Mal NEWINGTON and Dennis STUART Joe Kenny (Hampton) won the toss and elected to bat. Man of the Match : Hamish SCULLY (Hampton). HAMPTON WON ON THE FIRST INNINGS BY 165 RUNS HAMPTON won the BILL PEWTRESS PERPETUAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. Having won the toss on what looked to be a perfect batting wicket prepared at Bentleigh, Hampton captain Joe Kenny had no hesitation in sending openers Justin Ferguson and Jon Carpenter out to face the new ball. It was a positive start from Hampton reaching 29 without loss before losing two wickets to be 2/47. However, these would be Chelsea's last wickets of the day as Carpenter was joined by the 20 year old Scully who has risen through Hampton's junior system. Chelsea's left arm spinner Robbie Lancaster bowled a lot of overs in what was captivating cricket. Carpenter and Scully were measured in their approach knowing they had two full days to bat and when a combination of bad light and rain ended play prematurely, both players had reached half centuries and Hampton were in an imposing position at 2/146. Day two started well for Hampton before Carpenter was dismissed for 80 with the score at 3/168 ending his partnership with Scully at 121. At 3/ 220 and looking to accelerate to a massive total, Chelsea fought back to have Hampton all out for 293. Only Joe Kenny (35) and Joe Dawborn (19) resisted the collapse in any significant manner. Hamish Scully was finally dismissed for a classy 118, ensuring him the Man of the Match award. Daniel Bourke doing most of the damage for Chelsea with figures of 5/39. A tricky little session of 19 overs was what Chelsea's openers were faced with late on Day 2 but some rather flat bowling from the Hampton attack which has been brilliant all season, made the job a little easier. The day finished an over early with Chelsea at 0/28 and certainly back in the game. On day 3 the Chelsea openers were greeted by a rejuvenated Hampton bowling attack. With Sam Kenny bowling a spell of quality swing bowling and Joe Dawborn bowling with pace and aggression. Chelsea crawled to 37 without loss when Dawborn struck, first claiming the dangerous Perera with an inswinging yorker and then dismissing Thomas the very next ball with a nasty delivery fended off the neck. Chelsea could not fight back from this position and consistently lost wickets with spin twins Crouch and Carpenter demolishing the middle order and tail with 3 wickets a piece. Chelsea, all out for 128. Batting a second time Hampton openers Justin Ferguson and Jon Carpenter put on a dominant display to be 0/62, so dominant ,Chelsea captain, Shamith Kannangara conceded the match with 90 overs still remaining. Many consider this an outstanding accomplishment having been promoted to this grade this season and having found themselves in 6th position on the ladder going into the final round. Man of the Match : Scott FITZGERALD (Spotswood) SPOTSWOOD WON OUTRIGHT BY 105 RUNS SPOTSWOOD won the MICHAEL BANNON MEMORIAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. Spotswood won the toss in overcast conditions and had no hesitation in batting. As always in a Grand Final runs were hard to come by. Spotswood were in early trouble, when Cranwell was dismissed on 26 and with two run-outs, Spotswood were 5-46. Gleeson then joined Warnock and as rain ended Day 1 Spotswood were 5-126. Warnock (44) & Gleeson (25) put on 86 before both batsmen were dismissed early on Day 2. Spotswood lost 5-12 to be all out for 138. Best of the bowlers for Tullamarine was Martin who bowled with good pace and direction to claim 5-50. Due to unforseen circumstances, Tullamarine were left with two batsmen short. This was always going to be a tough challenge. Fitzgerald soon had Tullamarine on the ropes with a devastating spell of 5-7 off 14 overs. Tullamarine had to declare their innings at 8-40, with only Palmer and Martin reaching double figures. Spotswood had a lead of 98. As we all know Grand Finals are funny games and with tight bowling from Tullamarine, Spotswood collapsed to be 6-46. Day 2 ending with Spotswood 6-76. Once again Warnock (35) & Gleeson (30) put on 76 to put Spotswood in a good position. A last wicket stand of 25 between Fitzgerald (18) and Hoare pushed Spotswood's lead just over 250. Good pace bowling from Martin claimed him another 5 wickets. Tullamarine lost two early wickets to Fitzgerald, but attacking batting from Palmer had Tullamarine reaching 50 with 2 down. When the dangerous Palmer was dismissed in the 20's and Martin fell soon after, Tullamarine were in trouble and ended Day 3 at 5-106. With a gritty knock from Humphries (38) and stubborn batting from the lower order Tullamarine were finally dismissed for 147. Best of the bowlers for Spotswood were Matt Short with 3 wickets and once again Fitzgerald who was awarded Man of the Match with Match figures of 8-36 off 42 overs! 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd March, 2014 at Walter St Reserve, Ascot Vale. Umpires : Ray BUTTERFIELD and Robert TANNENBERG. Ben Foster (Sunshine United) won the toss and elected to bat. Man of the Match : Dilum SAMARASINGHE (Sunshine Heights) SUNSHINE HEIGHTS WON OUTRIGHT BY 6 WICKETS SUNSHINE HEIGHTS won the ROY PICONE PERPETUAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. Sunshine Heights defeated old rival Sunshine United in a tense game with Sunshine Heights co-captain Dilum Samarasinghe winning the man of the match award with scores of 33 and 19no and taking 1/23 and 5/41 in a fine all round display. After winning the toss, Sunshine United batted first, scoring 144 with the main wicket takers for Sunshine Heights being Will Dawson 4/28, Agha Adeel 3/30 and Mohsin Abbas 2/29. Henry Popinski (33) and Indika Dharamawardane (39) top-scored for SUCC. In reply Sunshine Heights lost a few early wickets at the beginning of their innings before Tim Mahoney and Dilum Samarasinghe came together at 3/15. Tim and Dilum restored the innings by putting on 92 runs before Tim was dismissed for a brilliant innings of 69. Dilum and Agha Adeel then put on 37 runs before Dilum was out for 33. Sunshine United’s score was passed with 5 wickets down before quick wickets fell late in the day to leave Heights with a slender lead and just two wickets in hand. On the final day, Sunshine Heights coach, Matthew Shawcross (0 not out off 113 balls!) and 16 year old wonder kid, Akon Mawien (1 off 52 balls), used up valuable time to leave United looking for quick runs to give themselves a chance. Michael Glowacki (4/24) and Leigh Sheridan (4/20) were the standout bowlers for SUCC. Sunshine United declared its 2nd innings at 8/97 after 20 overs, setting Sunshine Heights a target of 84 for victory. Dilum Samarasinghe was the main wicket taker with the figures of 5/41. The Heights' innings again got off to a shaky start before Dilum and Agha came together at 4/44 needing a further 40 runs for victory with 6 wickets in hand. After a slow grind both the boys settled the innings and secured the win with Dilum making 19no and Agha 30no hitting a 6 to bring up the winning runs. Special mention to Ray Butterfield and Robert Tannenburg who both umpired very effectively across the entire match. To Sunshine United, who were a very well-drilled and respected opponent, well done on your excellent season. Man of the Match : Fatih YETISMIS (Sunshine Heights) SUNSHINE HEIGHTS WON OUTRIGHT BY 157 RUNS SUNSHINE HEIGHTS won the Perpetual Shield, and Premiership Plaque. Newport-Digman (4th) hosted Sunshine Heights (SHCC) (2nd) at their home ground, Martyn Reserve, in Newport. A little surprising given SHCC were the higher ranked team. Nonetheless a great battle ensued over 4 days. Sunshine Heights won the toss and elected to bat. SHCC were in trouble early as the top order failed to click losing early wickets. At 4/36 however the ship was steadied with good input from middle order batsmen Simon Charlton (23) and Darrren Sandars (23). The Heighters ended up compiling a solid first innings total of 211. Runs in the bank! Runs were largely shared across a number of batsmen with key contributions from the middle and lower order, including Kelum Gunathilaka (43), Brandyn Di Sisto (39) and Fatih Yetismis (35). For Newport-Digman their fielding and particularly the catching was superb in the first innings and a major factor in the score being contained on a lighting fast outfield. Newport–Digman’s best bowlers were Leigh Collier (who took 4/33) and the captain Andrew Tee (2/30) who was unlucky not to have snagged a couple more wickets with his medium fast bowling. In reply, Newport-Digman looked well poised at 2/73, when the Fatih Yetismis show played out. Fatih’s left arm swing destroyed their batting line-up. Fatih finished with 6/22 from 19 overs including 10 maidens and was the difference in the match resulting in Newport-Digman being bowled out for 147. For Newport–Digman, top scorer was Paul Saltau with 24. With a 64 run lead, and batting again, the Heighter’s top order looked set at 2/80, only to have a batting collapse leaving SHCC struggling at 6/98. Leg spinner James Streets the chief destroyer taking 3 wickets and just missing out on a hat-trick. Newport–Digman failed to take some fielding chances along the way, and a 100 run partnership between club stalwart Simon Charlton (46) and Fatih Yetismis (65), followed by some lusty hitting from Brandyn Di Sisto (43) and Naveed Hussain (25), had SHCC scoring 291 in the second innings. This left Newport-Digman an improbable run chase of 356 off 55. They fell well short being bowled out for 198, with James Monahan (76) making a strong contribution. Sunshine Heights were thus proclaimed as West B2 Grand Final Premiers for season 2013/2014. Umpires : Mark WILSON and John POORE. Travis Gray (Aberfeldie) won the toss and elected to bat. Man of the Match : Troy MAGEE (Aberfeldie) ABERFELDIE WON OUTRIGHT BY 19 RUNS ABERFELDIE won the FRANK KEON MEMORIAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. On what could only be described as a great day for cricket, Aberfeldie won the toss and decided to bat first on what looked like an excellent batting surface. St Francis de Sales’ Hynson, who missed the semi final with an injury, took the new ball and had it hooping from the start. Abers openers Cave and Berzins batted patiently until Joyce got one past Berzins and bowled him. From this point, Aberfeldie lost seven quick wickets to be 7/37. Hynson and Joyce both had the ball swinging and the Abers boys had no answers. Magee and Rossiter put together a nice partnership of 30 until O’Halloran bowled Rossiter to have the Abers boys 8/107. Magee made 45no and Aberfeldie were rolled for 117. Hynson was the pick of the bowlers with 4/13. With the clouds coming and rain on the way, St Francis de Sales started their run chase positively and finished at stumps with 1/24. Fawcett (captain) and Reed were looking very comfortable at the crease. Day 2 started an hour late due to a wet outfield. Abers started the day with spin from both ends. Berzins had Reed caught behind for 7, which started a collapse and St Francis were bowled out for 72. Fawcett top scored with 16. The spin duo of Berzins (6/25) and young Liam McAllion (3/21) were the pick of the bowlers. Abers had 43 overs to bat, once again Abers top order failed with Hynson and Joyce swinging the ball. After having a 45 run lead and being 6/63 Abers were once again in trouble. Magee knuckled down along with Mules to put on 55 for the 7th wicket and made it to stumps. Day 3 started positively for St Francis de Sales dismissing Magee early for 20 but Mules batted well and was dismissed for 37. Abers were bowled out for 139, which gave them a 184 run lead. Hynson (2/32) and Joyce (5/40) were the best of the bowlers. With Reed injuring his knee whilst fielding, Eliers (their leading run scorer) was promoted to open. Eliers got off to a steady start but St Francis was reduced to 3/53. This brought together Crossley and Manek who batted well for a 68 run partnership. Once Crossley was dismissed for 38, St Francis de Sales lost steady wickets. Reed bravely came out to bat at number 11 and was the last wicket to fall, with a sharp chance by Simon Cave at bat pad. Manek batted beautifully for his team making 73no and getting his side so close but Abers had won by 20 runs. Umpires Mark Wilson and John Poore had a fantastic match with plenty of appeals, with both bowling sides being on top for most of the match. A big thank you to St Francis de Sales for hosting the match, they were a gracious host and should be congratulated for their efforts. ST BERNARD'S OC won the VIC BEDDOME MEMORIAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque.

The game brought together the two top teams from the North C2 division. While we had secured top spots with a round to play, we still had a lot of respect for the experienced Spotswood line up. After losing the toss and being sent out to field we knew early wickets would be the key to knocking them over for a reasonable score. James Riley striking 3rd ball of the day was the perfect start. Spotty settled and probably won the first session at 2/40 odd off the first 18. However 3/30 in the next session had things about even at tea. We knew getting club legend McCarthy out cheap would be key but even though he only made 27, he was crucial in 80 run partnership with Butterfield to get them to 6/164 overnight. Brown took 5/37 including 3 on the second morning to dismiss Spotty for 198. The chase started steadily however constant wickets meant we were in a bit of strife at 5/66. A partnership with Scarborough and Isaacs got us to 90 however 2 quick wickets meant we were 7/100. Enter Wheaton and Riley. In the last hour of play the managed to add 41 on to the board and we would finish the day on 7/141 after negating some tight bowling in the last 5-8 overs. On the morning of Day 3 we stayed as positive as possible with full faith in the lower order who had done the job many times in the regular season. We found ourselves at 9/169 needing 30 and Bialecki and Riley got us over the first innings line despite Bialecki skying a ball on 197 only to fall in between fine leg and the keeper! A nervous 2 seconds had by all when the ball was in the air. Riley managed to pass 50 in the process of the chase. From there we bowled an attacking Spotty out for 114 and managed to pass the score of 90 two down with young Jaggard making 30*. A fantastic result for the 3’s after such a dominant year. Congratulations to James Riley on his man of the match performance. Also thanks to Paul and Adam for their umpiring efforts and to the Spotswood boys on such a hard fought 4 days. Neel Saraiya (RMIT) won the toss and sent Taylors Lakes in to bat. Man of the Match : Tara JANA (RMIT) R M I T WON OUTRIGHT BY 6 WICKETS R M I T won the PREMIERSHIP SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. After our batting had been tested in the semi finals, we were ready and pumped to take on Taylors Lakes in the GF. We knew it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park with the opposition having the top 2 wickets takers in the league. It was also the first 4 dayer game most of our guys would have played so being patient was the key element required in both departments. Day 1 - With thunderstorms expected later in the day RMIT won the toss and bowled well. Taylors Lakes were 37/5 at drinks. We got a couple more wickets and ended Day 1 at 110/7 off 52 overs with rain stopping play. Day 2 - After a very fruitful day 1 we were planning to wrap things up early on day 2. Jason Denny from Taylor Lakes was playing a very watchful innings until now. What was to come from him was a masterclass of backfoot punches and cover drives. We were chasing 212 to win first innings. We had to bat 28 overs on Day 2, the batsmen needed to be positive. A good start without losing too many wickets and we would have been on course to 212. We were 65-1 off 15 overs exactly the start we needed. RMIT ended the day at 78/4 needing another 130. Day 3 - After a disappointing Sunday we knew this day was the make or break day. We had a 6th wicket partnership of 50 runs and we brought down the required runs from 135 to 80. RMIT lost a few wickets quickly and were 174/7. A 70 run 9th wicket partnership meant RMIT managed to score 247 at the end of days play. Our star all-rounders TJ (Tara Jana) and Nikunj Sahani's partnership got us across the line. RMIT had batted 98 overs and won first innings!! Day 4 - RMIT having won 1st innings knew Taylors Lakes were going to go hard from ball 1 and try to give us a target asap. This meant the wickets kept coming at regular intervals. Taylors Lakes managed 99 in second innings. RMIT chased down 70/4 in 20 overs and became PREMIERS!!! Tara Jana from RMIT was awarded the Man of the Match Award but it goes without saying that Jason Denny from Taylors Lakes was equally deserving. Taylors Lakes were a great opponent throughout the season and the Grand Final. They hosted us really well and made it easy for friends and family to come and support both teams. The umpires too need to be thanked for keeping a control of the game throughout the 4 days play. It was not easy with the weather conditions and the state of play for both teams, but they managed to let both teams play to their strengths. CRAIGIEBURN won the Premiership Shield, and Premiership Plaque. Grand Final day, perfect weather, a fantastic pitch and an outfield second to none. Two teams with a little bit of history facing each other. All the ingredients for what should be a fantastic game of cricket. At the toss, Craigieburn wins and elects to bat. Plenty of nerves on show, a slow but steady start for the opening bats Singh and Gandhi and steady bowling from McFarlane and Agius. 9th over is the first of many swings in this game, with the first wicket falling and quickly followed by Robinson for the second wicket in as many overs. By the end of the 18th over it was looking like Doutta Stars by how far with Craigieburn struggling at 4/49 and an extremely young inexperienced side being placed under pressure, with McDonald and Rutley on top. Then a fantastic fight back by 2 young guys Joel Brown (16) and Adam Davies (17), taking the score to 5/82 after 25 overs. Then another swing, 2 more wickets falling for just 7 runs, Douttas back on top. Then 2 very good pressure partnerships by Subramanian and Cornford (16yo) and Daniel Major (16yrs), reaching 9/137 at the end of the 36th over. Doutta’s get off to a very good start with Tate, McFarlane, Jamieson and Lamberti all getting starts . In the 26th over it's 4/95. Then the next swing, as Craigeiburn’s bowlers dig deep for a last ditch effort to change the game. Three quick wicket and Douttas are 7/106 ( 30th) and the pressure is showing on each batsman that comes to the crease. Rutley and Visterini take the score to 7/130 ( 33rd) and it looks like they have the game in control. Douttas need 8 runs, Craigieburn need 3 wickets, 2.1 overs left. Last roll of the dice for Craigieburn and the field is brought in to stop all singles. The very next ball Visterini drives straight to mid off, out! Score is 8/130. Craigieburn need 2 wickets to win, pressure is extreme as the number 10 comes to the crease. Two balls later, the pressure cracks, Runout! 9/131 with 9 balls remaining. At the end of the 35th Craigieburn need 1 wicket Douttas need 6 runs. The field are all in catching positions resembling the first session of a Test match rather than the last over of a one day Grand final. 5 balls to go and its down to 5 runs. 2nd ball of the 36th over and Ruskan pushes forward at a delivery from Robinson which takes the outside edge of the bat and flies to point where Singh take the catch. Craigieburn are victorious by 4 runs! A fantastic game that had everything you could wish for as a spectator, player or competing club. Great to have such experienced umpires in Eric Hurst and Mick Keohane who delivered a faultless display in a tight and exciting game. Fantastic effort by a Craigieburn, an average age of 22 with 6 players under 18 to beat a very experienced team from Doutta Stars. MENTONE WON OUTRIGHT BY 8 WICKETS MENTONE won the LES MICHAELS MEMORIAL SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. After finishing top of the ladder by 15 points but having lost 2 of the last 4 games, and scraping through the semi-final 7 down after an amazing innings of 89* by Avinash Fauzdar, we were confident yet grounded going into the Granny against Caulfield Gram who had beaten second placed Beaumaris for their place. We won the toss and chose to bowl on a morning that was humid and threatened to rain at any moment. A brutal opening spell by Cam Gumbleton supported by tight bowling from the other end saw Caulfield staring down the barrel early. At 4/40 they tried to hit their way out of trouble but clever bowling backed up by good fielding saw them lose wickets consistently to be all out for just 100 with no batsman scoring over 25. With 45 overs left in the day a solid start was required and that was delivered. When rain stopped play 70 overs into the day, we were 1/78. Torrential rain overnight sadly washed out Sunday, leaving a very slow work week for all concerned. When the second Saturday finally came around we started well and passed them just 1 down. Two quick wickets fell at 106 and 110 before getting back on track to be 3/150. All credit to Caulfield who never gave up and it paid off with a collapse that was sudden and gave them hope again. We were all out for 203 with top scorers Tom Garside 49, Andy Ware 46 and Ty Edwards 41, getting the majority of the total. Caulfield’s best bowler was spinner Sanjay Rakesh taking 3/23 off 10.4. 35 overs left on the Saturday and with time against them, Caulfield came out swinging in an effort to knock off our lead of 103 and set a total they could bowl at. Despite the aggressive batting, our bowlers stayed focused, even after our opening bowler who did the damage in the first innings went down with a back injury. We took wickets consistently again and at the end of the day they finished at 7/125, effectively 7/22. Sunday ended quickly after a brilliant dive on the fence to save 4 by 16 year old Josh Fisher was then followed by a long throw over the bails to affect the run out of their number 4 batsman who was still in and providing strong resistance. Caulfield were all out for 147, a lead of 44 - again no batsman made over 25, Tom Garside and James Jeffrey both taking 3 wickets. The 45 runs were chased down quickly in just 8.5 overs sealing the win by 8 wickets. Man of the match was Cam Gumbleton whose brutal opening spell on day 1 saw him take 5/18 off 8 to set up the game. Both Umpires did a fine job in a passionate Grand Final. On behalf of Cheltenham CC I would like to thank McKinnon CC for hosting the grand final, you guys did a great job with the wicket and ground facilities for all 4 days. Thanks also to the VTCA for all the work they do all year round so we can enjoy playing cricket. It’s always good to have umpires in the finals, as its very rare to get one during the season, so to Brian and Colin you guys managed the players very well and didn’t put up with any nonsense at all (you did your home-work). Thanks for doing a great job over the 4 days! To the McKinnon players and their captain Shaun, you all had a ‘never say die’ attitude and always gave yourselves the best chance to stay in the game after the first innings. Wow, what a performance from your openers in the second dig, great hitting. You’re a young side with plenty of talent. Loved the sledging as well! Good luck for next seasons guys. To my boys, what a great start on day 1 rolling McKinnon for 78, we held all our catches and some of them were pretty good. We leaked no runs and even had a BBQ. Josh (2 for 13) and Russell (2 for 9) good work boys! We looked a bit shaky for a while with the bat in the first dig being 7 for 73 but what a great partnership Simon (43) and Alan (22 no) putting on 61. The boys dug deep and batted a long time. To post a lead of 87 and to see it wiped in no time what can I say, Braydn (33) and Jake (59) the McKinnon openers batted with intent. Great batting boys! After getting one of the McKinnon boys out, our experienced bowlers Russell (5 for 39) and Harves (4 for 19) took control to whip through McKinnon which meant we needed 78 to win! Some great work from our wickie Alan and Walshy at gully. We passed McKinnon 5 down, Christian Harris our opening bat who’s 15 batted for 45 overs to end up 23 no, Harves got a quick 16 and Nick Ellery hit the winning runs. Go Chelt!! I would like to thank Jane McAndrew for scoring for us throughout the finals series, you're a treasure to the club Jane. To the Cheltenham supporters that made the effort to come and support, the team & I really appreciated it. Won’t ever be forgotten! Finally to the Cheltenham committee for the opportunity to captain the side and intrusting me to work with the young guys around the club. It’s a bright future for Cheltenham when we win a flag with 3 under 16’s and two 17 year olds in the side. To the Seniors, you are all great servants of the club and have been for a very long time, it’s great to have you all still playing and helping out. Thanks. Played Saturday 15th March 2014 at Boss James Reserve, Hampton. Umpires : Eswaraqa HEMAGARI and Arthur SIMPSON Peter Hay (Murrumbeena) won the toss and sent Hampton in to bat. Man of the Match: Stephen HAY (Murrumbeena). MATCH DRAWN. MURRUMBEENA (higher on the ladder)won the PREMIERSHIP SHIELD, and Premiership Plaque. A beautiful hard deck greeted Hampton and Murrumbeena. The wind was blowing from the southwest with the promise of inclement weather in the late afternoon. The two sides had previously met three times during the season with Murrumbeena holding a 2-1 advantage. Murrumbeena won the toss and sent Hampton in. When Craig Punshon was sharply snaffled low down at first slip in the 2nd over, it was an annoyance for the Hampton skipper but with a deep batting list, not a huge concern. When Stephen Hay completed a magical hat-trick 3 overs later, reducing Hampton to 4/3, that annoyance had turned to disbelief. A further wicket (Lane) shortly after from Hay reduced the home side to 5/11 and the grand final looked as though it was going to be over before tea. When Smith guided one to gully, Hampton was again in real trouble at 6-24. Hampton skipper, Nick Evans strode to the crease knowing that batting time was the only way to play, at least in the short term. Evans and Rae got through to drinks unscathed but in the first over after drinks, Rae inside edged a seemingly innocuous medium pace delivery on to his stumps to leave Hampton reeling at 7-40. Evans was then joined by the swashbuckling Fisher and the pair combined for a vital 59, involving some big hitting from Fisher and some sensible stroke play from Evans. They made it to the 32nd over before Evans (21) fell, trying to play a big shot and two more quick wickets saw Hampton dismissed for a scrambling 103 with Fisher finishing with 38*. Despite great bowling from Doyle and Rae, Murrumbeena made a solid start, reaching 27 before the first wicket fell. But then momentum swung the Seahorses way. Cam Norton bowled a great spell picking up 2 vital wickets and with a sharp diving catch by Evans and a one-handed classic by Smith, the visitors were reduced to 5/50 before the storm that had threatened finally broke over the David St ground. The rain had made the wicket damp around the creases and the ball quickly turned to soap. The batting rescuers Evans and Fisher now had to try and deliver with the ball as well. While Evans was made to bowl around the wicket in an attempt to get grip and Fisher was also struggling with his footing, Murrumbeena batted solidly and reached 80 before Evans and Fisher struck with the last and first balls of their overs respectively. With the game set up for a grand stand finish at 7/86, Fisher lost his footing and went over, damaging his knee and the umpires were forced to call off the game due to the dangerous pitch conditions. As Hampton finished the season top of the ladder, they were declared premiers. While it was an unfortunate way to finish a grand final, the umpires had probably let play go on a little long to try and get a result and in the end made the decision in the best interests of the participants. Peter Hay - Murrumbeena Fourth X1 Captain.
