[Music fades out.] 00:00:12 Jesse Host I’m Jesse Thorn. It’s Bullseye. Thorn 00:00:14 Music Music “Huddle Formation” from the album Thunder, Lightning, Strike by The Go! Team plays. A fast, upbeat, peppy song. Music plays as Jesse speaks, then fades out. 00:00:22 Jesse Host My guest, Steve Buscemi, doesn’t need that much of an introduction. He is one of the most memorable actors ever. He’s had hundreds of parts—leading parts in stuff like Reservoir Dogs, Ghost World, Boardwalk Empire. Iconic supporting parts in Fargo, The Sopranos, and—of course—30 Rock. So, we’ll skip the long intro and talk about his newest work. [Music fades out.] It’s a TV show called Miracle Workers, a comedy created by the hilarious Simon Rich—the same person behind Man Seeking Woman and a bunch of brilliantly written works you might have seen in The New Yorker, or on one of his many books, or heard on this show. Each season, Miracle Workers tells a different story with the same cast. Season one was set in Heaven, which is run kind of like a soulless megacorporation with an absentee CEO. Steve played God. Literally God. 00:01:14 Sound Transition Music swells and fades. Effect 00:01:15 Clip Clip Music: Peaceful, serene music.

FEBRUARY 2019 The Orchardist's Daughter Karen Viggers A story of freedom, forgiveness and finding the strength to break free. International bestselling writer Karen Viggers returns to remote Tasmania, the setting of her most popular novel The Lightkeeper's Wife. Description Sixteen-year-old Mikaela has grown up isolated and homeschooled on an apple orchard in southeastern Tasmania, until an unexpected event shatters her family. Eighteen months later, she and her older brother Kurt are running a small business in a timber town. Miki longs to make connections and spend more time in her beloved forest, but she is kept a virtual prisoner by Kurt, who leads a secret life of his own. When Miki meets Leon, another outsider, things slowly begin to change. But the power to stand up for yourself must come from within. And Miki has to fight to uncover the truth of her past and discover her strength and spirit. Set in the old-growth eucalypt forests and vast rugged mountains of southern Tasmania, The Orchardist's Daughter is an uplifting story about friendship, resilience and finding the courage to break free. About the Author Born in Melbourne and raised in the Dandenong Ranges riding horses and writing stories, Karen went on to study veterinary science at Melbourne University before working in practice for several years. She completed a PhD in wildlife health, and since then she has worked on a wide range of Australian native animals, including kangaroos. Karen loves landscapes, wild places, people and animals. She is the author of three novels: The Stranding (2008) and the bestselling, The Lightkeeper's Wife (2011) and The Grass Castle.

  • The Ultimate Cure for the Fake News Epidemic Will Be More Skeptical Readers
BEHAVIOR & SOCIETY The Ultimate Cure for the Fake News Epidemic Will Be More Skeptical Readers New algorithms will help—but users' skepticism is the ultimate weapon By David Pogue on February 1, 2017 Credit: Thomas Fuchs “Pope Francis Shocks World, Endorses Donald Trump for President.” “FBI Agent Suspected in Hillary Email Leaks Found Dead of Apparent Murder-Suicide.” “Rush Reveals Michelle's Perverted Past After She Dumps on Trump.” Those headlines didn't come from the New York Times or CNN; they were likely written by teenagers in Macedonia. Those fake news stories were written as clickbait, designed to draw readers to fake-news sites, where the Balkan teens made money by selling ads. If last fall's election will go down in history as the Election of Unintended Consequences, those fake stories are no exception. They wound up circulating copiously on Twitter and Facebook; on the latter, the top-20 fake stories actually triggered more clicks than the top-20 real ones. Fake news became fodder for ugly partisan warfare online, too. Worst of all, it might have affected the presidential election results. Remember, 44 percent of U.S. adults get their news from Facebook. You wouldn't think that fake news would be controversial. Surely we all agree that something as important as a presidential election should be based on truth. Can't we just ask Facebook and Twitter to block fake news? We can, but they can't. The problem isn't technological—it's philosophical. “Identifying the ‘truth’ is complicated,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in response to the phenomenon of fake news.

The Case of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (TDS) by ELENA-DANIELA (DANA) NEACSU Dissertation Director: John V. Pavlik, Ph.D. For the last decade, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (TDS ), a (Comedy Central) cable comedy show, has been increasingly seen as an informative, new, even revolutionary, form of journalism. A substantial body of literature appeared, adopting this view. On closer inspection, it became clear that this view was tenable only in specific circumstances. It assumed that the comedic structure of the show, TDS ’ primary text, promoted cognitive polysemy, a textual ambiguity which encouraged critical inquiry, and that TDS ’ audiences perceived it accordingly. As a result I analyzed, through a dual - encoding/decoding - analytical approach, whether TDS ’ comedic discourse educates and informs its audiences in a ii manner which encourages independent or critical reading of the news. Through a multilayered textual analysis of the primary and tertiary texts of the show, the research presented here asked, “How does TDS ’ comedic narrative (primary text) work as a vehicle of televised political news?” and “How does TDS ’ audience decode its text?” The research identified flaws in the existing literature and the limits inherent to any similar endeavors.
