Dear READER, Winter/Spring 2021 SQUARE BOOKS TOP 100 OF 2020 To understate it—2020 was not Square Books’ best year. Like everyone, we struggled—but we are grateful to remain in business, and that all the booksellers here are healthy. When Covid19 arrived, our foot-traffic fell precipitously, and sales with it—2020 second-quarter sales were down 52% from those of the same period in 2019. But our many loyal customers adjusted along with us as we reopened operations when we were more confident of doing business safely. The sales trend improved in the third quarter, and November/December were only slightly down compared to those two months last year. We are immensely grateful to those of you who ordered online or by phone, allowing us to ship, deliver, or hold for curbside pickup, or who waited outside our doors to enter once our visitor count was at capacity. It is only through your abiding support that Square Books remains in business, ending the year down 30% and solid footing to face the continuing challenge of Covid in 2021. And there were some very good books published, of which one hundred bestsellers we’ll mention now. (By the way, we still have signed copies of many of these books; enquire accordingly.) Many books appear on this list every year—old favorites, if you will, including three William Faulkner books: Selected Short Stories (37th on our list) which we often recommend to WF novices, The Sound and the Fury (59) and As I Lay Dying (56), as well as a notably good new biography of Faulkner by Michael Gorra, The Saddest Words: William Faulkner’s Civil War (61). -

D. Blanton, Chair This American literature dissertation offers an account of the critical category of “experimental literature,” arguing that, nebulous as the term appears to be, it is rooted in ideas of scientific experiment that were under debate in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While experimental literature is often described in terms of “formal innovation,” this dissertation reads literary form not as an autonomous category in its own right but as an indicator of epistemological investments. Borrowing Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison’s concept of the “epistemic virtue,” this dissertation argues that experimental literature seeks to produce a “sense of the real,” not by thematically treating scientific ideas or even by emulating scientific methods, but rather by using literary form to negotiate the changing landscape of what constituted scientificity in the first place. Epistemic virtues are the investments, at once methodological and ethical, that define the experimental mode. Experimental authors, this dissertation argues, seek ways for literature to produce knowledge with strong epistemic guarantees. -

Keefe: Not All 'Fake News' Is Equal In examining how higher education ought to respond to ‘fake news’ and the landscape of the ‘post-truth’ world, it is imperative to distinguish between accidental, ignorant, or intentional factual inaccuracies. The motives of accidental, ignorant, or disinformation are not uniform and, as such, the responses by institutions of higher education must not be uniform either. These three forms of erroneous information are as old as literacy itself, but with increased literacy as well as increased access to forms of dissemination and publication, the dangers of untrue information have been magnified. -

60 Literary Journalism Studies 61 By Any Other Name: The Case for Literary Journalism Josh Roiland University of Maine, United States Keynote Response: Literary journalism has experienced a resurgence in recent years, and like all popular movements it has sustained a backlash from those who believe it fetishizes narrative at the expense of research and reporting. New Yorker writer Nicholas Lemann’s IALJS-10 keynote talk returned the spotlight to the social function of journalism: to provide “a running account of the world.” He argues that for literary journalism to complete that task, it must privilege research and reporting over artistic expression. This response essay expands on Lemann’s talk by clarifying mis- conceptions about what the “literary” in literary journalism means, and demonstrates that the debates about what to call this genre—debates that have been rekindled in recent years with the ascendance of such vague-but- vogue terms “long form” and “long reads”—are not new. This narrative history explores both the misbegotten trail of the term “literary journalism” and its attendant field of study, but it also argues that the label long form represents a neoliberalization of language that positions readers not to con- sider or question, but only to consume. ut however vague and slippery a term, the New Journalism has become “Ba convenient label for recent developments in nonfiction writing and for the sharp critical controversy this writing has stirred up.” So wrote Ronald Weber in his 1974 preface to the book he had compiled and edited, The Re- porter as Artist: A Look at the New Journalism Controversy.1 Some four decades later, standing before a confederation of several dozen literary journalism scholars who had gathered from across the globe in Minneapolis, Nicholas Lemann wasted little time getting to the question that has bedeviled not only his audience of academics but also practitioners and, increasingly, casual read- ers: “What is literary journalism anyway?”2 Nearly every book-length work of Literary Journalism Studies Vol. -
