Taking their cue from the original book town, Hay-on-Wye, in Wales, rural French communities once in danger of disappearing have reclaimed their economic future and their heritage. Founded in 1961, Hay-on-Wye has served as a model for other towns to establish a used book trade, organize literary festivals, and promote the practice of traditional book arts that include calligraphy, binding, paper-making, and printing. In the French villages du livre of Bécherel (Bretagne), Montolieu (Languedoc), Fontenoy-la-Joûte (Lorraine), Montmorillon (Poitou-Charentes), and La Charité-sur-Loire (Bourgogne), ancillary enterprises such as museums, bookstores, cafés, and small hotels now occupy buildings that had stood vacant for years.

Taylor From the Director: The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce presented the annual State of the City event at Central Alabama Com- munity College’s Betty Carol Graham Technology Center on February 26, 2020. John Taylor, Assistant Library Director, and Robert Bradford, Library Assistant, represented both Adelia Russell and Mamie’s Place at the event along with library board member Sheralyn Belyeu. Mayor Tommy Spraggins and other city officials enlightened the audience on the positive aspects of the city. The renovation of the old Russell Main Office building and the progress of the new City Complex was one of the popu- lar topics shared. It is great to see historical places restored and progress being made for our City so that our City Government can run smoother and more effectively. Alexander City is a wonderful community with aspirations of progress. Its small town demeanor and welcoming charm make it a great place to live and work. We appreciate all the effort, research and elbow grease that helps produce good outcomes for this community. Robert’s Take: From the pen of Robert Bradford The American Standard version of the Bible in Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2 reads in part, “For Everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born; And a time to die…,” Authors seemingly live on for- ever through their works, but they too eventually pass from this life.

While much of shrinkage can be due to theft, it is impossible to distinguish between this and misplaced or inaccurate material accounting. Results reported herein should be considered a baseline assessment and not an annualized rate. There are three general ways to categories how shrinkage occurs to the library collection: materials are borrowed by patrons and unreturned; items which cannot be located are subsequently placed on missing status; and materials missing in the inventory, where the catalog identifies them as being on the shelf, are not located after repeated searches. Each of these three ways was assessed and reported separately due to the nature of their tracking. Shrinkage was measured for all branches and outreach services and for most material types, with the exception of non-circulating reference materials, paperbacks, CD-ROMS, maps, and the special collections. This analysis reflected 1.67 million of the 2.06 million item multi-branch collection (87% of the entire collection).

FEBRUARY 2019 The Orchardist's Daughter Karen Viggers A story of freedom, forgiveness and finding the strength to break free. International bestselling writer Karen Viggers returns to remote Tasmania, the setting of her most popular novel The Lightkeeper's Wife. Description Sixteen-year-old Mikaela has grown up isolated and homeschooled on an apple orchard in southeastern Tasmania, until an unexpected event shatters her family. Eighteen months later, she and her older brother Kurt are running a small business in a timber town. Miki longs to make connections and spend more time in her beloved forest, but she is kept a virtual prisoner by Kurt, who leads a secret life of his own. When Miki meets Leon, another outsider, things slowly begin to change. But the power to stand up for yourself must come from within. And Miki has to fight to uncover the truth of her past and discover her strength and spirit. Set in the old-growth eucalypt forests and vast rugged mountains of southern Tasmania, The Orchardist's Daughter is an uplifting story about friendship, resilience and finding the courage to break free. About the Author Born in Melbourne and raised in the Dandenong Ranges riding horses and writing stories, Karen went on to study veterinary science at Melbourne University before working in practice for several years. She completed a PhD in wildlife health, and since then she has worked on a wide range of Australian native animals, including kangaroos. Karen loves landscapes, wild places, people and animals.
