Steve Higgins was born on August 13, 1963 in Des Moines, to Marian (née Coppola) Higgins and Harold Higgins, who managed the custodial operations in West Des Moines schools.[4] Along with his brothers David Anthony Higgins and Alan Higgins, and actor , he toured in the comedy troupe Don't Quit Your Day Job[4] and performed at notable places in Iowa including the Hotel Kirkwood and The Spaghetti Works.[5] They eventually moved to California where they started performing in [6] and soon got their big break on The Higgins Boys and Gruber. In the early 1990s, Higgins was a writer for the MTV programs and The Show.[7] He has been nominated for several , including Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2008, for his work on and as a writer.[8]

In addition to being a series, The Higgins Boys and Gruber was also a featuring the Higgins brothers (Steve & David Anthony Higgins) and comedian Dave Gruber Allen.[9] In 1989, Higgins performed at The Vic Theatre in , Illinois for HBO's One Night Stand television series, along with his brother Dave, and Gruber.[10] With Nick Bakay, Higgins performed at the Girly Magazine Party show at Theatre/Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California in 1993, acting as "a sleazoid male chauvinist comedy duo who exchange off-color ethnic jokes and prance around in suits and ties like on acid". His brother, Dave, performed in the show and in a separate act. was praised for his ability of knowing "when to go over the top and when to rein it in", and how he was able to be "acutely tuned in to the comings and goings around them and know how to play off each other".[11]

I remember this show from the early Comedy Channel days. It was right there with the first season of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I admit, I don't remember much about it, except that its the Higgens boys and Gruber who sit around on an apartment set and make jokes about stuff and show other shows like 'Supercar' It was like the thunderbirds, except in monochrome. It had a car in it. Even after it was canceled, when the Comedy Channel and HA! merged I'm told, you could still see the three guys in their comedy sketches on the channel. Joel Hodgson did some writing for this show.

His research interests include the areas of effective use of information and communications technology (ICT) and digital technologies in schools, understanding how children's thinking and reasoning develops, and how teachers can be supported in developing the quality of teaching and learning in their classrooms. He has a particular interest in the educational philosophy of Pragmatism and the implications for teaching and learning. He is currently a member of the TLRP/TEL-funded SynergyNet research team, investigating the use of multi-touch tables in classroom learning.

Steve joined the School in September 2006 from Newcastle University, where he was the founding Director of the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching. Before working in higher education he taught in primary schools in the North East where his interest in children’s thinking and learning developed.

His teaching areas include primary mathematics, new and emerging technologies and supporting effective professional development of teachers, particularly using approaches which focus on the development of children's thinking, reasoning and understanding. He supervises doctoral students in these area. Steve teaches across a number of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes including PGCE, Masters and taught doctorate programmes.
