After searching and scouring You Tube and IMDb for days, a large list of funny people was created. After cutting said list from a group of hopefuls that included Bon-Qui- Qui, the creatarrrs of Pirate Facebook, and whoever has been setting off the Wall, Phelps and Irby fire-alarms, the following 10 comedians and comediennes were selected for keeping us rolling on the floor and slapping our knees. 1. Tina Fey No surprise here. Tina Fey is a maverick filled with that maverick energy, but she's got more to her name than the best Sarah Palin impression this side of Alaska. Governor Palin herself described the Weekend Update host and star of "Baby Mama" as "a ィ ッ ッ エ セ As the first female head writer of"Satur- day Night Live" and the creator of the hit NBC show "30 Rock," Fey has garnered five Emmys in the past two years as well as several hottest woman nomi· nations. Although male fans across the nation were disappointed when Fey traded her naughty secretary black-rimmed glasses for Palin lenses, she remains on the top of the current comedic scene. 2. Conan O'Brien Probably today's most prominent comedic writer and funniest male personality, Conan O'Brien earns the number two spot. A former writ- er for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," Conan has hosted his "Late Night" show for over 12 years; however, the magna cum laude graduate of Harvard will replace Jay Leno next year as the face of late night tele\;sion and will most likely celebrate with his famous string dance. While Conan resembles Finnish president Tarja Halonen, this smarty-pants is not finished leaving his mark on the world of comedy. Kudos. 3. Steve Carell Everyone's favorite awkward turtle Steve Carell has kept fans laughing since his career blew up in 2005 with "The 40 Year Old Virgin; "Evan Almighty" and "The Office." After voicing Gary in Robert Smigel's '"lhe Ambiguously Gay Duo" and appearing on "The Daily Show," he moved on to "The Office." .Michael Scott's humor is drier than Nancy Pelosfs nether region, but this is what makes Carell, a master enter- tainer, so damn funny. He has won a dozen awards including the Guys' Choice Funniest i\Iother Fucker Award, and that is why he's number three on our list. 4. Stephen Colbert Presidential hopeful, author and all-around-rib-tickling personality Stephen Colbert has secured his name in the comedic spotlight with four Emmys and a best-selling book. Previously a reporter on "The Daily Show;· Colbert lefl Jon Stewart and company in 2005 to host The Colbert Report (and steal Stewart's spot on this list). 1he Northwestern University graduate is by far the funniest political satirist on television today. With an SNL stint and the 2006 \'\'hite House Correspondents' Association Dinner under his belt, look for Colbert's name on the 2012 presiden- tial ticket. 5. Amy Poehler It's a blimp! It's the Superdome! It's Amy Pohler! Or a<; Dromio puts it, "She's spherical, Jike a globe; I could find out countries in her!" With a stomach larger than Uzbekistan, Poehler looks like she·s going to pop faster than a bloated midget. Although not from Redneck County, our favorite gum-chomping, white trash diva from "Baby Mama" is a Massachusetts native known for her Britney Spears and Kelly Ripa impressions on "SNL." Poehler joined the cast in 200 I and has since appeared in "Blades of Glory" with baby daddy Will Arnett, but plans to take maternity leave for a baby of her own. \\'e think... 6. Demitri Martin Demetri Martin is a carbon copy of fashion dimwit Rachel Zoe:., husband Ro"er Berman (with good hair) and has endeared himself to audiences with his signature flip charts and guitar play. A relallwly new face on the scene, Martin is young and has more energy than a Paris Hilton sex video. With a Perrier Comedy Award and eA.-perience writing for "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," expect bigger and better things in the future from our number six. 7. U.S. Economy The newest satire of Arthur l\-1iller's "Death of a Salesman", titJed '"Ilic ll.S. Economy; is directed by Ben Bernanke and the House Republicans. Starring Wachovia, Fannie .\lae and Freddie !\lac. it crashed into stock markeL'> last week. Wall Street investors bought thou- sands of tickets for the debut, and until the DO\'\' called, they were cheaper than gas prices and a better option than listening to the FED. Catch the U.S. Economy, Part II in The $700 Billion Plan this November 8. Jonah Hill Keeping with the Jewish trend (and smceyesterdaywas Yorn Kippur and we got a day off from school, go Jews!), Jonah Hill secures number eight a<; a young, yet successful actor. With an impressive resume compiled in only a few years ("Evan a ャ ュ ゥ ァ ィ エ ケ セ "Grandma's Boy" and ofcourse "Superbad") that surely trumps his ·rve slept with this many women, but not really" Ii t, Hill has recently been seen on the セ i t v Movie and Video Music Awards as well as the "Don't Vote" video promoting voter activism. With roles in more than four upcoming movies. including "This Side of the t イ オ エ ィ セ expect Hill to climb to the top of the comedy ladder. 9. Sarah Silverman The fire-spitting. self-proclaimed ·chink" lover known as Sarah Silver- man is a vulgar Jew who lO\·es poking fun at blacks. Mexicans and any- one with a nose bigger than hers. The foul-mouthed Emmy winner hosts her own program on Corned) Central and proves that one really can make a career out of fart jokes and sleeping with Matt Damon. J\ftpr countless television appearances and stand-up routines, Silverman has established a reputation as an inappropriate yet hilarious bitch. 10. Kristen Wiig With a forehead bigger than the U.S. economic deficit, Kristen \V'tig's baby-handed "SNr character Denise is launch- ing her to the top of the comedienne scene. Also known for her roles in "Knocked Up" and B s ・ ュ ゥ M p イ ッ セ \Viig has induced side-splitting laughter to "SN.I: followers during her three seasons on the show. • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network.

One outlet which constantly both reflects and enables patriarchy is our media; the movie industry in particular plays a critical role in constructing gender roles and reflecting our cultural attitudes toward patriarchy. Film and sociology scholars Stacie Furia and Denise Beilby say,

  • Netflix's Big Mouth
Netflix’s Big Mouth Big Mouth = Big Topics The first season of Netflix’s new animated show Big Mouth debuted on September 29, 2017 and is very popular among teens and young adults. Boasting an all-star cast and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the cartoon is about middle schoolers going through puberty in the most explicit, perverse, and, at times, depraved way possible. Puberty is indeed a difficult time for all of us, and while the show does bring some good to the discussion, it’s also fraught with problems. What do I need to know about Big Mouth? It’s an adult cartoon based on the real-life experiences that comic writers Nick Kroll and An- drew Goldberg had as kids growing up in New York. They share, in graphic detail, what it was like growing up and going through puberty. As most young men do, Nick and Andrew strug- gled through lust, sexuality, relationships with girls, and the ups and downs of friendship. The show features some of the most popular comedians of our time as the voices, including: John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jordan Peele. Although the show is about pre-teens, it is intended for an adult audience. However, Netflix does not effectively limit younger viewers’ access, and undoubtedly, there will be many teens and pre-teens who watch the show. Many of them have lots of questions about sex, and they will be drawn to the show in hopes of finding answers. Unfortunately, due to the content, they are likely to develop some severely warped ideas from watching it.
