You Deserve a Beer-Cation: Get-Aways for You and Your True Tall You Deserve a Beer-cation: Get-aways for you and your true tall, dark and frosty love If quarantine walls seem to be closing in this winter, it’s natural to seek an escape from it all, and our neighbors in the north offer a few beer-centric getaways for you and your person. Remember to check state restrictions before booking any sort of travel. Woodstock Inn & Brewery in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, provides a comfy oasis snug in a picturesque landscape. Stays are available in 40 rooms across six buildings, with easy access to their on-site brewery. Take a tour, enjoy a flight, or grab a bite at one of their four eateries — the main bar, brewpub, taproom, or the “Dam Bar,” which uses downed beaver trees as roof supports and salvaged wood for the remainder. Woodstock suggests it’s the perfect place to get stuck for the day. While Woodstock Inn has an array of beer as fresh as the White Mountains, their highest-rated beverage is actually a non-alcoholic root beer named K & M Rootbeer. If you can’t make it out to the brewery, you may find it on tap at Providence’s own Malted Barley. woodstockinnbrewery.com Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, is an Austrian-inspired resort founded by the Trapp family. The von Trapp Family is best known for their portrayal in The Sound of Music; however, they have since distanced themselves from the film due to its inaccuracies. The resort is still run by direct descendants of the von Trapps, and they have dedicated the space to their passion for winter sports, music and Austrian culture. The on-site brewery — or as they refer to it, the “bierhall” — is a fairly new addition that premiered on Oktoberfest in 2016. After much research and a lengthy trip to Austria, Johannes von Trapp, president of The Trapp Family Lodge, identified the exact type of traditional Austrian lager he wanted to brew that incorporated centuries-old recipes and fresh spring water cultivated on site. Complete with accurate Austrian architecture, European seating, and even tap handles modeled after Ibex horns, the Trapp family bierhall is certain to give guests a unique beer experience. Their highly rated Bavarian Pilsner has been described as “crushable,” a perfect day drinking beer while you bask in the majesty of the Vermont mountains from sunrise to sunset. trappfamily.com/brewery.htm If you prefer to keep it local, Hotel Viking in Newport offers a balanced mix of history and luxury and Newport natives welcome guests with a unique Newport experience. Although there is no brewery on site, the on-site dining option, One Bellevue Restaurant, offers quaint, upscale dining. They pride themselves on their handcrafted cocktails and also offer a rotating draft list. In close proximity to some of RI’s finest breweries, including Newport Craft and the up-and-comer Reject’s Beer Co., Hotel Viking is a prime getaway for beer lovers. Just 7 minutes away, Newport Craft Brewing & Distillery Co. is one of Rhode Island’s first major breweries and Rhode Island’s first licensed distillery in over 135 years. Their two-story tasting room is the perfect hideaway for you and your Valentine to sip some of the state’s highest-rated beers on tap, including cult favorite Rhode Rage, a crisp double IPA. To keep the beer (and romance) pouring all night, head to Norey’s on Broadway. This classic established brewpub hosts an eclectic array of beer on tap, as well as some seriously sweet desserts that are perhaps Newport’s best-kept secret. hotelviking.com.

von Trapp® Brewing “A little of Austria, a lot of Vermont”™ By the family that inspired “The Sound of Music” About Our Lagers Johannes von Trapp always loved the crisp, clean, locally brewed lagers that he found in small towns in Austria. All of our lagers are brewed here at the Trapp Family Lodge, using our own water from an artesian spring high up in our mountains. Brewmaster JP Williams uses traditional Austrian brewing techniques such as “de-coction” and “step-mashing” to increase the complexity of the flavor profile. In our new state-of-the-art Brewery we follow the Reinsheitsgebot - the German Law of Purity of Brewing. No adjuncts, no substitutes, no marketing hype... just beer the way it’s meant to be. • Self-Guided Tours
Self-Guided Tours CHAPEL HIKE – 1 MILE ROUND TRIP Enjoy a short (but steep) hike/snowshoe to the chapel that Werner von Trapp and other members of the family built. From the Outdoor Center head to the Fox Track trail and hike up approximately 1/10th of a mile to the start of the Chapel Trail on the right. The trail then has a few switchbacks and gets a bit steeper just before you reach the Chapel. You may go inside the Chapel and write a prayer or ring the bell that sits upon the top of the Chapel. The shortest route back to the Trapp Family Lodge is straight down the hill opposite the entrance to the Chapel. History of the Chapel Werner von Trapp and his brother Rupert joined the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division in 1943 in the middle of WWII. This was an elite unit of mountaineers and skiers that was deployed to Europe to fight the Germans and Axis Powers in WWII. There was a battle that took place in the mountains of Italy that Werner did not think he would survive. Werner made a promise to God that if he made it through the war alive that upon returning home he would build a Chapel to God. Werner survived with his brother Rupert and in 1946 started hauling stone up the hill behind the Lodge. It took Werner over 4 years to complete the Chapel. The oldest surviving of the singing children is Rosemarie von Trapp, who is now 91 years old. She lives in Stowe Village and in the Summer hikes up to the Chapel to collect the prayers that people leave behind.

  • The Scene This Week in Local Music: Elisabeth Von Trapp
The Scene This week in local music: Elisabeth Von Trapp Kate Bredimus Richmond.com Wednesday December 8, 2004 Elisabeth Von Trapp's life has been a musical one. This is only natural, considering that she is a member of the curtain-wearing, Nazi-evading clan immortalized on stage and in film by "The Sound of Music." Elisabeth's father, Werner Von Trapp, was portrayed as the stoic Kurt in the movie, and grew up to become a member of the Trapp Family Singers. Her grandfather is Captain Von Trapp, and her step-grandmother is the famous flibbertigibbet, Maria. Growing up in Vermont, Werner would sing both Austrian and American folk songs to Elisabeth, her sister and four brothers. These early influences would help sculpt her own music later on, a blend of classical, folk, and pop. Elisabeth's lustrous, emotionally resonant singing and intricate guitar playing recalls anyone from Schubert to Joni Mitchell. And yes, she does "Edelweiss" too. We chatted with the singer/guitarist about her new album, Poetic Justice, which gives musical life to the poems of Robert Frost, and what it's like growing up Trapp. For Poetic License, you had to get permission from Frost's publisher, Henry Holt & Co., to use his poems before scoring and recording the music. How long has the process taken? The idea stemmed from my album in 1997, One Heart, One Mind. With the first Robert Frost poem, "A Minor Bird," came the idea that it'd be nice to have an album and focus on a project. It was a beautiful experience, to work more artistically on a project.

  • Bierhall “A Little of Austria, a Lot of Vermont” ®
Brewing Bierhall “A little of Austria, a lot of Vermont” ® The History of the von Trapp Family The Story Behind the Story After fleeing Austria in 1938, our family toured the world as the Trapp Family Singers. The mountains of Vermont were reminiscent of Austria, and we bought our hilltop farm here in 1942. In 1950 we began hosting skiers during the winter, and the family home evolved into the Trapp Family Lodge. In the late 1960s I returned to manage the hotel with my mother Maria. We created the first commercial cross-country ski resort in the Americas in 1968, and began adding to the family's land holdings. After a fire destroyed the original Lodge in 1980, we built the new hotel, re-opening in 1983. Today the Trapp Family Lodge has 2,500 acres that provide world- class cross country skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and serenity in one of the most beautiful locations in Vermont. Our resort is still owned and managed by my children and me. For decades I dreamed of brewing crisp, clean craft lagers like the ones we tasted on trips back to Austria. In 2010, we opened our first humble brewery in a retrofitted bakery, and the response to our beer was tremendous. We built a new innovative brewery, with a Rolec brewhouse from Bavaria, and now distribute our beer throughout the northeast. Our beers have won multiple awards, and have helped drive the return of craft-brewed lagers in the United States. We hope you enjoy our beer, and your experience here at the Trapp Family Lodge.
