THE SOUND OF MUSIC Wednesday, October 7, 2015 Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles THE SOUND OF MUSIC The Sound of Music is a stage and film musical based on The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, the memoir of Maria von Trapp. The story takes place in Austria at the brink of World War II. Maria, a plucky nun turned governess, is charged with caring for the seven children of a military captain. Maria’s delightful teaching of music to the children leads to their becoming a celebrated touring act, the innocence of which is shattered as the realities of Nazi rule become inescapable. Notably, many details of the von Trapp family story were changed to increase the dramatic impact of the musical version. Inspired by a pair of German films about the von Trapps from the mid-1950s, the stage version of The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959. The production won multiple Tony Awards, and the show has been revived many times since, including a renowned 1998 Broadway revival. The 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews won five Academy Awards and is still beloved today by viewers around the world. Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the songs of The Sound of Music—including “My Favorite Things,” “Do, Re, Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song—have been celebrated for more than half a century. RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN Composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein were one of the most prolific, successful songwriting teams in the history of musical theatre. The pair’s first collaboration, Oklahoma! (1943), marked the start of a new theatrical genre: the musical play, which combined elements of musical comedy, operetta, and drama. -

Bob Dylan, Complicity, and the March on Washington 1963 By Frank Mehring Contemporary reports had been surprisingly quiet about the sounds and soundtrack of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on 27 August 1963 where Martin Luther King, Jr. held his famous I have a dream speech. When journalist Lerone Bennett Jr. from the influential magazine for the African-American market, EBONY, reported on the March on Washington, music was more or less absent. As the most significant effect of the march, LIFE magazine emphasized the Negroess orderly demonstration of their potential as a moral force (20). The New York Times zoomed in on the po- litical speeches emphasizing particularly Martin Luther Kings speech, which touched all the themes of the day, only better than anybody else (1). There is hardly any mention of the power of music, which permeated the event. This silence of the contemporary press begs the following question: Is there a musical signature that can be connected to the March on Washington? The music of the March of Washington can- not be seen exclusively from the perspective of the African American struggle for freedom but also needs to be understood by drawing attention to the connec- tion between youth, ethnicity and the folk revival in the early 1960s. -

Theo Bikel with Pete Seeger (and more) First, here’s another item for consideration by people who think that Pete Seeger was anti-Israel. (If you haven’t already, read Hillel Schenker’s recent post on this.) We have the permission of Gerry Magnes — active with the Albany, NY regional J Street chapter, who married into an Israeli family — to quote what he emailed the other day: Thought I would share a small anecdote my father in law once told me. He’s 95 and still living on a kibbutz (Kibbutz Evron) in the Western Galilee. Last winter, when my wife and I mentioned to him that we’d just attended a Pete Seeger concert . in Schenectady, . he related how he’d seen him perform (I think in Tel Aviv), probably in ’64. When he [Seeger] began to speak about the Israeli-Palestinian/Arab conflict at that time and his hopes for peace, he began to cry. He had to stop talking or singing for a bit until he could collect himself. They were part of the original board (with Oscar Brand, George Wein and Albert Grossman) that founded the Newport Folk Festival. The Conflicts of the Main Character in “The Sound of Music” Karissa Mitha Harijanto 1213009010 Abstract Most people enjoy watching films. One of the films that teaches a lot of life lessons is The Sound of Music, a legendary musical film that was made in 1965. In this thesis, the writer analyzes the main character in the film, Maria von Trapp, as the focus of the study. The objective of the study is to find out the conflicts that happen to Maria, the possible causes of the conflicts, how Maria manages the conflicts, and the effects of Maria’s presence in the von Trapp family. The analysis found that Maria faced two internal and four external conflicts. The possible causes of the conflicts came from both outside and inside Maria herself. However, Maria managed the conflict quite well with a little help from the Reverend Mother. Maria brought significant changes to the von Trapp family. She made the von Trapp family, who had been so stiff and gloomy since the death of the mother, happy and warm again. Literature mostly tells about the reflection of human life. Die in Wien geborene Waise gehört dem Bund Neuland an, einem 1919 gegründeten katholischer Verband, der sie nach- haltig prägt. Zwei Jahre später heiraten von Tapp und Maria, 1929 und 1931 werden zwei Töchter geboren. 1933 verliert von Trapp sein gesamtes Vermögen durch die Fehlspekulation seiner Hausbank. Die Hausangestellten werden entlassen, die Familie zieht in deren Zimmer unter den Dachstuhl und vermietet die Bel Etage an Festspielgäste und Künstler, unter anderem an die weltberühmte Wie- ner Sängerin Lotte Lehmann. Maria von Trapp gründet mit Hilfe des Hauskaplans einen Famili- enchor, und nimmt, ermuntert durch Lotte Leh- mann, 1937 an dem Volkssängerwettbewerb der Salzburger Festspiele statt, den sie gewinnen. Es folgt ein erstes Radiokonzert und das Angebot einer Konzertreise durch Amerika. 1938 erfolgt der Anschluss Österreichs an das Dritte Reich und der als kaisertreu bekannte Georg von Trapp befürchtet Repressalien, zumal er ein Konzert der Familie zu Hitlers Geburtstag abge- lehnt hatte. Er vermietet das Haus an einen geist- lichen Orden und emigriert mit der gesamten Familie und dem Chorleiter und Hauskaplan Georg Wasner in die USA. Mit dem Zug geht es über Italien, die Schweiz und Frankreich nach Eng- land, von dort mit dem Schiff nach New York. Elisabeth Von Trapp
Elisabeth von Trapp Elisabeth von Trapp is the granddaughter of Maria von Trapp and Georg Ritter von Trapp, whose story inspired The Sound of Music. The Trapp Family Singers, which Maria and Georg founded in Austria and brought with them to the United States when they escaped Austria in 1938, included Elisabeth's father, Werner von Trapp. The Family Singers disbanded in 1957. Inspired by her father’s guitar playing and singing, Elisabeth has carried on the legacy of The Trapp Family Singers. Elisabeth began taking piano lessons when she was eight and by the age of sixteen she was playing guitar and traveling the back roads of New England performing with her siblings at weddings, gospel meetings and town halls. Her musical style takes from many genres, including modern and Gregorian Chant, Hymns, Psalms and Works by Hildegard von Bingen. She has performed in the U.S., Russia and Austria, including European cathedrals and Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Story of the Trapp Family Singers By Maria Von Trapp Chapter One Just Loaned Somebody tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up from the workbooks of my fifth graders, which I was just correcting, into the lined, old face of a little lay sister, every wrinkle radiating kindliness. "Reverend Mother Abbess expects you in her private parlor," she whispered. Before I could close my mouth, which had opened in astonishment, the door shut behind the small figure. Lay sisters were not supposed to converse with candidates for the novitiate. I could hardly believe my ears. We candidates saw Reverend Mother Abbess only from afar in choir. We were the lowest of the low, living on the outskirts of the novitiate, wearing our black mantillas, waiting with eager anticipation for our reception into the sacred walls of the novitiate. I had just finished the State Teachers' College for Progressive Education in Vienna and had to get my Master of Education degree before the heavy doors of the enclosure would shut behind me -- forever. It was unheard of that Reverend Mother Abbess should call for a candidate. What might this mean? Her private parlor was far at the other end of the old Abbey, and I chose the longest detour to go there, in order to gain time for examining my conscience. I was the black sheep of the community; there was no doubt about that. I never meant anything bad, but my upbringing had been more that of a wild boy than that of a young lady. Time and again I had been warned by the Mistress of Novices that I could not race over the staircase like that, taking two and three steps at a time, that I definitely could not slide down the banister; that whistling, even the whistling of sacred tunes, had never been heard in these venerable rooms before; that jumping over the chimneys on the flat roof of the school wing was not fitting for an aspirant to the novitiate of the holy Order of Saint Benedict.
