Elisabeth von Trapp Elisabeth von Trapp is the granddaughter of Maria von Trapp and Georg Ritter von Trapp, whose story inspired The Sound of Music. The Trapp Family Singers, which Maria and Georg founded in Austria and brought with them to the United States when they escaped Austria in 1938, included Elisabeth's father, Werner von Trapp. The Family Singers disbanded in 1957. Inspired by her father’s guitar playing and singing, Elisabeth has carried on the legacy of The Trapp Family Singers. Elisabeth began taking piano lessons when she was eight and by the age of sixteen she was playing guitar and traveling the back roads of New England performing with her siblings at weddings, gospel meetings and town halls. Her musical style takes from many genres, including modern and Gregorian Chant, Hymns, Psalms and Works by Hildegard von Bingen. She has performed in the U.S., Russia and Austria, including European cathedrals and Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Building on her famed family’s passion for music, Elisabeth has created her own artistic style, at once ethereal and earthy, delicate and powerful. Listeners have likened her to Judy Collins and Loreena McKennitt. She will be performing at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Life Center, located at 2477 West Washington Street in Springfield, at 7 p.m. Elisabeth von Trapp’s earliest memories are the sounds of music. Born and raised in Vermont, she has carried on the legacy of the internationally renowned Trapp Family Singers. Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has performed all over the world, enchanting audiences in a variety of venues from European cathedrals to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Building on her family’s legacy, Elisabeth has created her own musical style, at once ethereal and earthy, delicate and powerful. Listeners have likened her to Judy Collins and Loreena McKennitt. Critics have called her voice “hauntingly clear,” “joyfully expressive” and “simply beautiful.” Proceeds from the event will benefit LSSI’s Storybook Project, a statewide program that enables children to remain connected to their incarcerated parents. The Scene This week in local music: Elisabeth Von Trapp Kate Bredimus Richmond.com Wednesday December 8, 2004 Elisabeth Von Trapp's life has been a musical one. This is only natural, considering that she is a member of the curtain-wearing, Nazi-evading clan immortalized on stage and in film by "The Sound of Music." Elisabeth's father, Werner Von Trapp, was portrayed as the stoic Kurt in the movie, and grew up to become a member of the Trapp Family Singers. Her grandfather is Captain Von Trapp, and her step-grandmother is the famous flibbertigibbet, Maria. Growing up in Vermont, Werner would sing both Austrian and American folk songs to Elisabeth, her sister and four brothers. These early influences would help sculpt her own music later on, a blend of classical, folk, and pop. Elisabeth's lustrous, emotionally resonant singing and intricate guitar playing recalls anyone from Schubert to Joni Mitchell. And yes, she does "Edelweiss" too. We chatted with the singer/guitarist about her new album, Poetic Justice, which gives musical life to the poems of Robert Frost, and what it's like growing up Trapp. For Poetic License, you had to get permission from Frost's publisher, Henry Holt & Co., to use his poems before scoring and recording the music. How long has the process taken? The idea stemmed from my album in 1997, One Heart, One Mind. With the first Robert Frost poem, "A Minor Bird," came the idea that it'd be nice to have an album and focus on a project. It was a beautiful experience, to work more artistically on a project.

RMS BULLETIN NO. 533 July/August 2008 Knott’s Berry Farm by Mike Prero Knott‘s Berry Farm, billed as America‘s first theme park, is the kind of success story that America was all about in pre-World War II America. A little guy, not looking for a handout, pulling himself up by his own bootstraps to eventually become a virtual American institution. It‘s the story of Walter and Cordelia Knott, who, in 1920, were sharecroppers in San Louis Obispo, CA. They hadn't had it easy. They and their three children had already spent three years trying to homestead in the Mojave Desert (!). When Walter‘s cousin offered him a partnership in raising berries in Buena Park, it sounded like a good opportunity to stake a claim on their own farm. For $1,000 a year, they could rent 20-acres on a five-year lease with an option to rent for another two years. Things still didn‘t come easily. Most of the family‘s savings went to purchase equipment and berry plants. Several heavy frosts, almost unheard of in Southern California, nearly wiped them out in that first year in 1920. The second year, berry prices plummeted. But it was Walter‘s roadside stand that got the family through. Walter had heard of a new type of berry, the “Youngberry,‖ recently developed by a farmer in Alabama. Central Life Central Presbyterian Church February 6, 2019 ELISABETH VON TRAPP in Concert, Wednesday, Feb 20, 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us for a magical evening on Wednesday, Feb 20, from 7- 8:30 pm. An offering will be taken as a part of the concert. Elisabeth will be accompanied by her husband Ed Hill in her travels. This is her first time to have a concert in SW Virginia and NE Tennessee. Following the concert, Elisabeth will have her books and CDs for sale. On Sunday, Feb 17, 4 p.m., we will show the movie The von Trapp Family: A life of Music. This is the story of Agathe, the eldest daughter and the obstacles that she overcame to pursue a life of music. Though we may know the story of the von Trapp family from The Sound of Music, this movie offers a different perspective within the real history of the start of WWII. If you would be willing to help with the moving of sound equipment and then reloading it after the concert, please talk to Ann Aichinger. Elisabeth Von Trapp ³Some of my earliest memories are of music«it has had an impact on me and continues to guide me; music has given me a place to be.´ For Elisabeth Von Trapp, the ³sounds of music´ have been a calling since her earliest memories. Her step-grandmother was the famed ³flibbertigibbet and will of the wisp´, Maria, whose story inspired the musical and film, ³The Sound of Music´. Elisabeth's father, Werner Von Trapp, was portrayed as the stoic Kurt in the film which starred Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp, Elisabeth's grandfather. Elisabeth will be demonstrating her own passion for music at St. Peter's on October 25th at 7pm. Growing up in Vermont, where her family settled in 1940, Elisabeth was inspired by the continuous presence of music in her home. There was her father's guitar playing and singing, the Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart from her family record collection and the voices of The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan wafting from the open airways of Vermont radio. Elisabeth started on a musical journey of her own, with beginning piano lessons at the age of eight, that has brought her to sing on the subway platforms of New York City, small folk clubs and concert halls to the White House, National Cathedral and the Kennedy Center. Elisabeth explains her unique eclectic style, ³It was a pleasure to listen to all of the classical albums we had. From that experience, I memorized both Classical and current music very early on, and sometimes would prefer listening to orchestra pieces and the beautiful melodies within it.
