Il s’agit d’une œuvre complète, qui illustre l’appétit créatif de Thomas Lauderdale, fondateur du groupe, depuis 15 ans: en plus d’of- frir une perspective originale sur le passé d’un groupe devenu aujourd’hui incontournable, elle comprend 7 morceaux inédits (dont «Moon River», en duo avec Gus Van Sant). Savant mé- lange de sonorités et de cultures de tous horizons, la musique de Pink Martini est un cocktail à déguster sans modération. L’aventure Pink Martini débute en 1994, dans l’Oregon. Origi- nellement centré autour de Thomas M. Lauderdale et China Forbes, le groupe aux inspirations et collaborations multiples chante en anglais, français, mais aussi espagnol, italien, japo- nais, croate… Leur style musical, éclectique, passe «d’une samba digne d’une parade à Rio de Janeiro à la musique d’un cabaret français des années 30 ou d’un palais napolitain, un peu comme une sorte de voyage musical urbain», d’après les mots de Thomas Lauderdale. «On essaye de créer une sorte de char- mant environnement musical, dont on peut augmenter ou bais- ser le volume, et jouer en toute occasion, ou presque: musique d’ambiance, aventure amoureuse ou quand on passe l’aspira- teur chez soi!». On y retrouve le mor- ceau-phare «Je ne veux pas travailler», qui va faire connaître le groupe en Europe en étant la bande-son de la publicité pour la Picasso de Citroën. Dans la lignée de «Sympathique», il confirme le potentiel du groupe, notamment en France, où il est certifié Disque de Platine. Vient ensuite «Hey Eugene» en 2007, du nom du tube pop, racontant une déception amoureuse, acclamé par le public. Le premier, entre jazz, cha-cha-cha en français et adaptation de thèmes classiques, comprend 13 chansons, dont 4 reprises. Sur le deu- xième, enregistré pour les fêtes de Noël, les douze musiciens ont choisi de revisiter de grands classiques comme «White 10 Christmas», mais aussi des morceaux moins connus, en s’en- tourant toujours de chœurs et d’autres figures de la chanson (la japonaise Saori Yuki par exemple, avec qui ils viennent d’ail- leurs d’enregistrer un album). Like other eager politicians-in-training, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun… but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming, lackluster, loud and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the «little orchestra» Pink Martini in 1994 to pro- vide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for politi- cal fundraisers for causes such as civil rights, affordable hous- ing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks. One year later, Lauderdale called China Forbes, a Harvard class- mate who was living in New York City, and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to write songs together. Their first song «Sympathique» became an overnight sensation in France, and to this day remains a mantra («Je ne veux pas travailler») for striking French workers. Pink Martini made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998 under the direction of Norman Leyden. Since then, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San 17 Francisco Symphony, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London. Other appearances include the grand open- ing of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, with return sold-out engagements for New Year’s Eve 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011; two sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall; the opening party of the remodeled Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the Governor’s Ball at the 80th An- nual Academy Awards in 2008; the opening of the 2008 Sydney Festival in Australia; two sold-out concerts at Paris’ legendary L’Olympia Theatre in 2011; and Paris’ fashion house Lanvin’s 10-year anniversary celebration for designer Alber Elbaz in 2012. Pink Martini’s debut album «Sympathique» was released in- dependently in 1997 on the band’s own label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog), and quickly became an interna- tional phenomenon, garnering the group nominations for Song of the Year and Best New Artist in France’s Victoires de la Mu- sique Awards in 2000. Pink Martini released «Hang On Little Tomato» in 2004, «Hey Eugene!» in 2007 and «Splendor In The Grass» in 2009. In November 2010 the band released «Joy To The World» –a festive, multi-denominational holiday album fea- turing songs from around the globe. All five albums have gone gold in France, Canada, Greece and Turkey, and have sold well over 2.5 million copies worldwide. In fall 2011 the band released two albums – «A Retrospective», a collection of the band’s most beloved songs spanning their 18-year career, which includes eight previously unreleased tracks, and «1969», an album of collaborations with legendary Japanese singer Saori Yuki. «1969» has been certified platinum in Japan, and marked the first time a Japanese artist hit the American Bill- board charts since Kyu Sakamoto’s «Sukiyaki» in 1963. The band has collaborated and performed with numerous artists, including Jimmy Scott, Carol Channing, Jane Powell, Rufus Wain- wright, Martha Wainwright, Henri Salvador, Chavela Vargas, New York performer Joey Arias, puppeteer Basil Twist, Georges Moustaki, Michael Feinstein, filmmaker Gus Van Sant, Courtney Taylor Taylor of The Dandy Warhols, clarinetist and conductor Norman Leyden, Japanese legend Hiroshi Wada, Italian actress and songwriter Alba Clemente, DJ Johnny Dynell and Chi Chi 18 Valenti, Faith Prince, Mamie Van Doren, the original cast of Sesame Street, the Bonita Vista High School Marching Band of Chula Vista, California and the Pacific Youth Choir of Portland, Oregon. Singer Storm Large began performing with Pink Martini in March 2011, when China Forbes took a leave of absence to undergo surgery on her vocal cords. Forbes made full recovery and now both she and Large continue performing with Pink Martini. Pink Martini has an illustrious roster of regular guest artists: NPR White House correspondent Ari Shapiro, Cantor Ida Rae Cahana (who was cantor at the Central Synagogue in NYC for five years), koto player Masumi Timson, harpist Maureen Love, and Kim Hastreiter (the publish/editor-in-chief of Paper Magazine).

    HAVE GERMAN WILL TRAVEL sound of Music SOUND OF MUSIC Maria Augusta Kutschera von Trapp (1905 to 1987) Biography Maria Augusta Kutschera - born on a train heading from her parents' village in Tyrol to a hospital in Vienna, Austria - was an orphan by her seventh birthday. She graduated from the State Teachers College for Progressive EducationP1 in Vienna at age 18, in 1923. She entered Nonnberg Abbey, a Benedictine (Roman Catholic) monastery in Salzburg, intending to become a nun.r4J While still a school teacher at Nonnberg Abbey, she was asked to teach one of the seven children of widowed naval commander Georg Ludwig von Trapp and bis first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp, who had died from scarlet fever. Maria and Georg were married on 26 November l 92i2U1J. In 1935, Trapp lost his fortuneP1 which had been safely invested in a bank in London. The Captain, to help a Mrs. Lammer - a fi:iend in the banking business - had withdrawn the money from the English bank and deposited it in Mrs. Lammer's bank, which promptly failed. Austria had been experiencing economic difficulties as a result of German pressure and other factors. To survive, the Trapps sent away most of their servants, moved into the top floor of their home, and rented the empty rooms to students of the Catholic University. The Archbishop sent Father Franz Wasner to stay with them as their chaplain and the family began turning its love of music into a career. 5 After performing at a festival in 1935, they became a popular touring act.
