    Buddy Miller’s Majestic Silver Strings New West Records Buddy Miller, named Artist of the Decade by No Depression Magazine, teamed up with esteemed guitarists Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz to create The Majestic Silver Strings, a monumental musical experience to be released on CD, with bonus DVD, March 1, 2011 via New West Records. The Majestic Silver Strings, produced by Buddy, is his re-imagination of country songs, loaded with guitars, atmosphere and attitude. Guest vocalists on the album include Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Chocolate Genius, Ann McCrary and Julie Miller. Rounding out the band are Dennis Crouch on bass and Jay Bellerose on drums. The Majestic Silver Strings and the album’s guests are among the most well respected and in-demand current musicians. Making a record of this caliber was a dream and took luck of scheduling to make come true. A bonus DVD with concert footage of the first, and only performance to date with Buddy, Marc, Bill and Greg playing the tracks selected for this project, will be included with the CD. The musicians re-interpret classic country songs written by some of the most esteemed songwriters including Lefty Frizzell, Roger Miller and George Jones, whose hit “Why Baby Why” is sung by Buddy on the record. The band also tackles a few traditional compositions and several new songs including “God’s Wing’d Horse” written by Julie Miller and Bill Frisell.     “Seeds Blowin’ Up the Highway in the South Wind”: Woody Guthrie’s Angry Sons and Daughters Roxanne Harde University of Alberta, Augustana1 Abstract Both anger and hope drive Woody Guthrie’s protest songs. Lyrics like “This Land Is Your Land” offer a hopefully angry voice that continues to be heard in the work of contemporary American singer-songwriters. This essay analyzes the ways in which Guthrie’s voice and vision continue to inform the songs of Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Mary Gauthier. By bringing Guthrie’s hopeful anger that insists on justice and mercy and precludes sentimentality, hostility, and nihilism into conversation with the artists who continue his legacy of activism, this paper looks to the “Seeds” Guthrie sowed. In November 2009, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert, Bruce Springsteen opened his set with an astute and angry commentary and then introduced the perpetually enraged Tom Morello before launching into a blistering version of “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” just one of many Springsteen songs that depend upon the work of Woody Guthrie. “If you pick up the newspaper, you see millions of people out of work; you see a blood fight over decent health care for our citizens, and you see people struggling to hold on to their homes,” Springsteen said: “If Woody Guthrie were alive today, he’d have a lot to write about: high times on Wall Street and hard times on Main Street.” Relatedly, when David Rawlings performs “I Hear Them All,” with or without 1 Copyright © Roxanne Harde, 2018.

Oregon Ballet Theatre's resident choreographer, Nicolo Fonte. (Heidi Williams/Staff) Leading off is George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” arguably one of the best‑known and best‑loved American compositions ever. Performing the piece in a world‑premiere performance will be two of Oregon’s most respected pianists, Thomas Lauderdale and Hunter Noack. Lauderdale’s popular Portland band, Pink Martini, comes onstage in the second half of the program to reprise its 2014 collaboration with the ballet company, “Never Stop Falling (in Love).” Tying it all together is choreography by Nicolo Fonte, in his second season as Oregon Ballet’s resident choreographer, whose work has been performed nationally and internationally.
