The Doo-Wahs are an amazing band with a unique, original sound using guitars, fiddles, harmonica, accordion and of course, their voices! They define their sound as "high energy country with a cajun twist". Their tight musicianship and powerful arrangements of classic and original songs have made them favorites everywhere they go! BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS Country Music has its origins in the folk music of Great Britain and Ireland. The music changed and grew in America because of the influence of music brought from other parts of Europe, Latin America and Africa. Country Music moved from the farm to modern America due to radio. Artists became professionals, but the simple harmonies and themes of writing about working people has never changed. In the 1950’s country Music started to become strongly influenced by cross over artists like Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Today, Country Music is being strongly influenced by pop music. VOCABULARY WORDS Cajun music The music of Louisiana. Strongly influenced by the local French descendants. The predominant instruments of Cajun music are the fiddle and the accordion. Country music An American musical style with roots in the South. It is also strongly influenced by Western cowboy music and folk music. Most of the instrumentation country music is in string instruments such as banjos, guitars and violin, and a non-string instrument such as the harmonica. -

Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon. -

We are so glad you have joined us to celebrate the power of music to make social change. Each of the first three SONGS OF PROTEST events, starting in April of 2017, was presented to sold-out audiences in our Rockland, NY community. This latest concert, was supposed to have taken place in-person on April 6th, 2020. We had the performer lineup and songs already chosen when we had to halt the entire season due to the pandemic. As in SONGS OF PROTEST 1, 2 & 3, we had planned to present an evening filled with amazing performers and powerful songs that have had a historical impact on social justice. When we decided to resume the series virtually, we rethought the concept. With so much going on in our country and the world, we offered the performers the opportunity to write or present an original work about an issue from our current state of affairs. -
Reunion: a Portrait of Jim Lauderdale at Exit/In on the Venue's 43Rd
Burr / Reunion / !1 Reunion For Versatile Veteran, Heart’s Where the Home Is Jim Lauderdale sidles onto the stage at Exit/In, his broad smile and spangled garb shimmering alike as the sparse crowd gathered at his feet whistles and hoots. Their ogling of the long-haired, guitar-wielding man before them invites a half-baked comparison to traveling salesmen settling in for a highway-exit lap dance and the subsequent allaying of the day’s harsh impotence, an inchoate inkling which is put on ice after one peripheral glance at the milieu and Jim’s lack of nipple pasties. For a 43rd anniversary concert — the venue’s, not the performer’s, though Jim has swum circles around the clubs and back-alleys of New York’s and Nashville’s music scenes for near as long — the turnout is scant, a reality only partially shrouded by the effusive reception showered on Jim by the group of loyalists in attendance. “How are y’all doing?” Lauderdale asks the crowd. Helen of Troy he is not — his hair girds a visage which, especially around his glinting eyes, betrays the passage of time like a just- overripe peach — but tonight, he is the one who launches a storied conduit into the future’s belligerent uncertainty. “Glad you could make it out tonight,” said Lauderdale. “It’s good to be back for the birthday celebration.” From here, Jim knows the drill. * * * Exit/In was opened in 1971 by Owsley Manier and Brugh Reynolds; as noted by the venue’s website, it is “one old, dark, loud piece of Nashville rock stuck right in the middle of the Burr / Reunion / !2 Music City,” a history-steeped mainstay amidst a countrified minefield of melodic glories and discordant despairs. -

The Turtles sued because Sirius XM has taken the position that it doesn’t need permission — and therefore doesn’t need to pay for use of — pre-1972 recordings protected under state law, even though it does pay for post-1972 recordings that are protected by federal law. This relates to an issue that SoundExchange has long been fighting — the failure of some large digital radio services to pay for the use of such vintage recordings. We think Sirius XM’s position is wrong as a matter of law, and definitely wrong as a matter of justice! The California federal court agreed with our view of the law and sided with The Turtles in their lawsuit. As SoundExchange President and CEO Michael Huppe said in a statement, we believe that “all sound recordings have value, and ALL artists deserve to be paid fairly for the use of their music.” 1 www.soundexchange.com Now, legendary artists like Martha Reeves, T Bone Burnett, Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), and Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield) are sharing in this sentiment and praising The Turtles for taking up this cause. -

As a 6 toddler, Billy would sing for friends and family using his toy karaoke machine, wowing them 7 with his incredible voice and natural ability. By the age of 5, Billy would delight in shopping with 8 his mom at a Westerly supermarket, and would stick his head inside the door of a frozen food 9 case, and sing to see if the echo would make him sound like he was on a stage. He liked what he 10 heard and he scribbled on the condensation of the glass door the words, "Now Starring: Billy 11 Gilman!"; and 12 WHEREAS, Billy gave his first public performance on a stage at the age of seven. Billy 13 Gilman later performed at the Washington County Fair in Richmond and other local fairgrounds 14 in the New England area. -

Buddy Miller’s Majestic Silver Strings New West Records Buddy Miller, named Artist of the Decade by No Depression Magazine, teamed up with esteemed guitarists Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz to create The Majestic Silver Strings, a monumental musical experience to be released on CD, with bonus DVD, March 1, 2011 via New West Records. The Majestic Silver Strings, produced by Buddy, is his re-imagination of country songs, loaded with guitars, atmosphere and attitude. Guest vocalists on the album include Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Chocolate Genius, Ann McCrary and Julie Miller. Rounding out the band are Dennis Crouch on bass and Jay Bellerose on drums. The Majestic Silver Strings and the album’s guests are among the most well respected and in-demand current musicians. Making a record of this caliber was a dream and took luck of scheduling to make come true. A bonus DVD with concert footage of the first, and only performance to date with Buddy, Marc, Bill and Greg playing the tracks selected for this project, will be included with the CD. The musicians re-interpret classic country songs written by some of the most esteemed songwriters including Lefty Frizzell, Roger Miller and George Jones, whose hit “Why Baby Why” is sung by Buddy on the record. The band also tackles a few traditional compositions and several new songs including “God’s Wing’d Horse” written by Julie Miller and Bill Frisell. Many projects boast one guest vocalist; Buddy has six revered friends lending their voices to the recording including Emmylou Harris on “Why I’m Walkin’” and Lee Ann Womack on “Meds.” Buddy also does a duet of “I Want To Be With You Always” with Patty Griffin. -
