We are so glad you have joined us to celebrate the power of music to make social change. Each of the first three SONGS OF PROTEST events, starting in April of 2017, was presented to sold-out audiences in our Rockland, NY community. This latest concert, was supposed to have taken place in-person on April 6th, 2020. We had the performer lineup and songs already chosen when we had to halt the entire season due to the pandemic. As in SONGS OF PROTEST 1, 2 & 3, we had planned to present an evening filled with amazing performers and powerful songs that have had a historical impact on social justice. When we decided to resume the series virtually, we rethought the concept. With so much going on in our country and the world, we offered the performers the opportunity to write or present an original work about an issue from our current state of affairs.

  • Reunion: a Portrait of Jim Lauderdale at Exit/In on the Venue's 43Rd
Burr / Reunion / !1 Reunion For Versatile Veteran, Heart’s Where the Home Is Jim Lauderdale sidles onto the stage at Exit/In, his broad smile and spangled garb shimmering alike as the sparse crowd gathered at his feet whistles and hoots. Their ogling of the long-haired, guitar-wielding man before them invites a half-baked comparison to traveling salesmen settling in for a highway-exit lap dance and the subsequent allaying of the day’s harsh impotence, an inchoate inkling which is put on ice after one peripheral glance at the milieu and Jim’s lack of nipple pasties. For a 43rd anniversary concert — the venue’s, not the performer’s, though Jim has swum circles around the clubs and back-alleys of New York’s and Nashville’s music scenes for near as long — the turnout is scant, a reality only partially shrouded by the effusive reception showered on Jim by the group of loyalists in attendance. “How are y’all doing?” Lauderdale asks the crowd. Helen of Troy he is not — his hair girds a visage which, especially around his glinting eyes, betrays the passage of time like a just- overripe peach — but tonight, he is the one who launches a storied conduit into the future’s belligerent uncertainty. “Glad you could make it out tonight,” said Lauderdale. “It’s good to be back for the birthday celebration.” From here, Jim knows the drill. * * * Exit/In was opened in 1971 by Owsley Manier and Brugh Reynolds; as noted by the venue’s website, it is “one old, dark, loud piece of Nashville rock stuck right in the middle of the Burr / Reunion / !2 Music City,” a history-steeped mainstay amidst a countrified minefield of melodic glories and discordant despairs.

  • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

The Turtles sued because Sirius XM has taken the position that it doesn’t need permission — and therefore doesn’t need to pay for use of — pre-1972 recordings protected under state law, even though it does pay for post-1972 recordings that are protected by federal law. This relates to an issue that SoundExchange has long been fighting — the failure of some large digital radio services to pay for the use of such vintage recordings. We think Sirius XM’s position is wrong as a matter of law, and definitely wrong as a matter of justice! The California federal court agreed with our view of the law and sided with The Turtles in their lawsuit. As SoundExchange President and CEO Michael Huppe said in a statement, we believe that “all sound recordings have value, and ALL artists deserve to be paid fairly for the use of their music.” 1 www.soundexchange.com Now, legendary artists like Martha Reeves, T Bone Burnett, Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), and Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield) are sharing in this sentiment and praising The Turtles for taking up this cause.

  • Sarah Canterbury Remembering Sophia Jane I Heard a Faint Stream of Notes Carried by Piano Keys, Dusty Keys That Journeyed Upstairs
Canterbury 1 Sarah Canterbury Remembering Sophia Jane I heard a faint stream of notes carried by piano keys, dusty keys that journeyed upstairs into my bedroom and through my almost closed door. My family’s long neglected piano was desperately out of tune, so each note was a little sharp, and a sort of sour sound lingered but I could still make out “Amazing Grace.” The familiar church hymn rose and alarmed me, not because it was music or because the hymn echoed through my home, but because someone was playing our piano, actually playing it, which hadn’t happened in a long time. The hymn filled the hall that opened up below my room and it must have ventured into the rest of the house, the way it had years before when my brother Luke still played. I don’t remember how old I was, or how I ventured down towards it. Maybe I was still a child and ran unafraid of what I didn’t know, or maybe I slowly walked to the piano, nervous to find out who crafted the echoing hymn. I found my grandma Jane, my dad’s mom at the piano. She sat oddly far away from the keys and stared at a blank metal music stand. Her feet stretched out to work the pedals and her swollen fingers drifted along the keys, like all she knew how to do in life was play that piano, and that song. I stared for a while as she played so clearly and looked so lost, “That’s really good,” I said making her stop and gaze at me.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

As perfectly imperfect as a trip like this should be. And you’ll be left gasping for air. Wondering “what the fuck is this music I’ve just heard?” Which is classic Untold. We’ve come to expect the unexpected from him. From day one, with tracks like Kingdom, Anaconda and Stop What You’re Doing, Untold has been an inventor and tastemaker. Today with two iconic record labels to his name, Hemlock and Pennyroyal, his imagination and openness to the new strides on. And Black Light Spiral, Untold’s first album released on Hemlock, continues in the same spirit. It delivers on Untold’s mission to keep the people up and at it with rough tough music while confounding them with brilliantly executed improbabilities. Untold was raised on Jungle and Hardcore, has travelled through Dubstep and leftfield Techno and now he’s arrived here where he’s playing with sub bass, sirens, reggae samples and broken rhythms. But this isn’t token rave revivalism. Because while Untold may be experienced in the best raw genres dance music has to offer, he has no desire to defer back ad infinitum.
