There’s always something special about working on a play that is so oriented to family, love, and kindness. To spend the rehearsal days surrounded by a positive story, with young, creative, energetic performers, community members, and outstanding professionals is a true gift. We tend to see The Sound of Music through a nostalgic lens, stirring memories of happy dancing children and a young twirling . Working on the stage play has the delight of delving into these exuberant aspects, but it also allows us to explore the complexity of the story. Elsa and Max’s characters and motivations are far more detailed in the stage version, for example, as is Maria’s journey from struggling novitiate to instant mother of seven. We can often forget that this happy story takes place in the looming shadow of war, under political circumstances that were real and ultimately catastrophic. Delving into this onstage not only adds richness to the struggle and journey of , it is a reminder of how the politics of hatred can divide societies and friends. Conversely, the shared experience of theatregoing stir our emotions, connections, and appreciation of others and community. We are so happy that we can share this big, high- spirited musical – just perfect for the beginning of the holiday season – with all of you. I offer my personal thanks to the Western Theatre staff. This is one of the largest productions ever undertaken by WCT, and our has responded to the challenge with their usual dedication, hard work, and gusto. We continue a holiday tradition with this production, with a show for families to enjoy together. We are grateful to you for sharing it with us. Enjoy.

www.celistawine.com PLAYWRIGHTS After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902- 1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in the American . Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in left: Richard Rodgers; right: Oscar Hammerstein II its heyday. Prolific on Broadway, in and in Hollywood from the ‘20s into the early ‘40s, Rodgers & Hart wrote more than 40 shows and film scores. Among their greatest were ON YOUR TOES, BABES IN ARMS, THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, I MARRIED AN ANGEL and PAL JOEY. Through the same era Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta. His collaborations with preeminent composers resulted in such operetta classics as THE DESERT SONG, ROSE-MARIE, and THE NEW MOON. With Jerome Kern, he wrote , the 1927 operetta that changed the course of modern musical theatre. His last musical before embarking on an exclusive partnership with Rodgers was , the highly- acclaimed 1943 all-black revision of Georges Bizet’s tragic opera CARMEN. OKLAHOMA!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, representing a unique fusion of Rodgers’ musical comedy and Hammerstein’s operetta. A milestone in the development of the American musical, it also marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history and was followed by , , , , , , and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote one musical specifically for the big screen, , and one for television, CINDERELLA. Collectively, the musicals of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II earned 42 , 15 , two Pulitzer Prizes, two Grammy Awards and 2 Emmy Awards. Despite Hammerstein’s death in 1960, Rodgers continued to write for the Broadway stage. His first solo entry, , earned him two Tony Awards for music and lyrics, and was followed by DO I HEAR A WALTZ?, TWO BY TWO, REX and . Richard Rodgers died on December 30, 1979, less than eight months after his last musical opened on Broadway. In March of 1990, Broadway’s 46th Street Theatre was renamed The Richard Rodgers Theatre in his honour.

Of the musicals wrote, eight premiered on the block of West 44th Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway. FUN FACT The Sound of Music is based on a true story. The real von Trapps were a family of 7 children, whose mother died of scarlet fever in 1922. When Maria Kutschera, a novice at the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg in , Austria, was sent to the von Trapp estate to tutor one of the children, she fell in love with the children; Georg von Trapp fell in love with her. Maria and Georg married in 1927 and had three more children. FUN FACT The real von Trapps were always a musical family, although Maria did teach them to sing madrigals. When they lost most of their wealth in the Depression of the early 1930s, one of their ways of coping was to make the family hobby of singing into a profession. They won first prize at the Salzburg Music Festival in 1936 and successfully toured across Europe. Proud to Support Western Canada Theatre
