Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish on this the Fourth Sunday of our season of Lent! Today is Laetare Sunday! The Fourth, or middle, Sunday of Lent is so called because of the first words of today’s Introit, or the Entrance Antiphon, “Laetare Jerusalem” or “Rejoice, O Jerusalem.” Today is a day of rejoicing that we are now just 21 days, or three weeks, away from Easter! This special Sunday during Lent is intended to encourage all the faithful to stay on course through this season of penance. On this Sunday, we look with expectation and hope to the great Feast of Easter. This is expressed in the liturgy by the giving to the priests the option of wearing the rose-colored vestments. Yeah, we probably won’t be taking that option here. Today was actually called Rose Sunday for many years, not because of the color of vestments, but because of a tradition of the popes blessing golden roses that were then sent as a symbol of support to Catholic sovereigns in Europe. And yeah, we probably won’t be blessing any golden roses today at St. Maria Goretti either. What we are doing today is coming together to be strengthened by Jesus with the Sacrament of His Body and Blood! We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who are joining us for Masses this weekend. We’re very happy that you are with us! I ask your prayers for the men of Christ Renews His Parish teams #35 and #36 who are on retreat this weekend. Christ Renews His Parish has made such a difference here in our Parish community. That whole list of volunteers that appears each week in the bulletin and lists all the various ministries here at St. Maria Goretti is chockful of alumni from Christ Renews His Parish. We have been very blessed. An important part of all of the weekends though is our united prayer. Please keep the guys and the weekend in your prayers. This coming Tuesday evening, March 13, is our annual Lenten Penance Service. A number of priests from around the Carmel Deanery will be joining us for Confessions at the Penance Service. You’ve read my speech before, but it is still true. In a parish the size of St. Maria Goretti, these communal penance services are extremely important to give everybody the chance the go to Confession. It is why we have these in Advent and Lent. With just two priests and more than 6,000 parishioners, Fr. Sean and I could hear Confessions from now until Easter Sunday morning and would still not be able to get everybody in. We’ve got to take advantage of this opportunity. I hope that you can come and join us on Tuesday night. We need to go to Confession before Easter. Tonight at our 5:30 pm Mass we will be celebrating Scout Sunday. I congratulate all our children and young people who will be receiving their Religious Emblem Awards. I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of the adults who work so hard and volunteer so much time so that St. Maria Goretti Parish can have the full complement of Scouting programs to offer. Once again, we have been so blessed! Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub scouts, and Brownies, at all their different levels, teach valuable skills and values to our young people. At one time not so long ago, the Catholic Church was the largest supporter of Scouting in America. That is no longer true, but we are extremely happy that Scouting is alive and well here at St. Maria Goretti. And thanks to all who keep it that way! This Friday, we have another one of our Super Soup Suppers. Try saying that really fast! We do invite you to come and bring the whole family and have some delicious meatless soups. The Super Soup Supper will take place in the Parish Hall, 5–8 pm this Friday, March 16. We hope that you can join us. The Stations of the Cross will be prayed in church at 7 pm, so come and make a night of it. Please also keep in your prayers our Catechumens and Candidates for full membership in the Church—our Elect! They are in their final days of preparation now for joining the Church at the Easter Vigil. It’s a small group this year, but they are mighty, and we are so very proud of each of them! Have a great week! Let us remain committed to our Lenten promises. Only three weeks to go! In Christ, Fr. Kevin Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save. They just stand there shining. Welcome! For more than 22 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! ORE Open Research Exeter TITLE Liturgy as history: the origins of the Exeter martyrology AUTHORS Hamilton, S JOURNAL Traditio: Studies in Ancient and Medieval History, Thought, and Religion DEPOSITED IN ORE 01 November 2019 This version available at http://hdl.handle.net/10871/39448 COPYRIGHT AND REUSE Open Research Exeter makes this work available in accordance with publisher policies. A NOTE ON VERSIONS The version presented here may differ from the published version. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication 1 Liturgy as History: The Origins of the Exeter Martyrology Sarah Hamilton, University of Exeter Abstract Through an Anglo-Norman case study, this article highlights the value of normative liturgical material for scholars interested in the role which saints’ cults played in the history and identity of religious communities. The records of Anglo-Saxon cults are largely the work of Anglo-Norman monks. Historians exploring why this was the case have therefore concentrated upon hagiographical texts about individual Anglo-Saxon saints composed in and for monastic communities in the post-Conquest period. This article shifts the focus away from the monastic to those secular clerical communities which did not commission specific accounts, and away from individual cults, to uncover the potential of historical martyrologies for showing how such secular communities remembered and understood their own past through the cult of saints. Exeter Cathedral Library, Ms 3518, is a copy of the martyrology by the ninth-century Frankish monk, Usuard of Saint-Germain-des-Prés , written in and for Exeter cathedral’s canons in the mid-twelfth century.

The ecclesiastical in stitutions along the Meuse and its larger vicinity were among the most prolific producers ofhagiography throughout the mid dle ages, and the period roughly encompassing the late tenth to the early twelfth century was no exception.
