Il Savoia infatti, rimprovera all'amico Francese eccessiva indecisione. I fatti daranno ragione a Carlo Alberto. Francesco Giuseppe, per evitare altre rivolte federalizza l'Impero; Nasce l'Impero Centro-Europeo, struttura federale composta dall'Arciducato d'Austria e dai Regni di: Tirolo, Trentino, Venezia- Giulia, Carinzia, Croazia, Bosnia, Carniola, Slovacchia, Trasnsilvania, Ungheria, Boemia, Moravia, Valacchia,Galizia e Lodomeria.

My name is Andre Altherr and I’ll be your Crisis Director for the Cabinet of Armenia: 1920 committee. I’m from New York City and am currently a Second Year at the University of Chicago majoring in History and Political Science. Despite once having a social life, I now spend my free-time on much tamer activities like reading 800-page books on Armenian history, reading 900-page books on Central European history, and relaxing with the best of Stephen King and 20th century sci-fi anthologies. When not reading, I enjoy hiking, watching Frasier, and trying to catch up on much needed sleep. I’ve helped run and participated in numerous Model UN conferences in both college and high school, and I believe that this activity has the potential to hone public speaking, develop your creativity and critical thinking, and ignite interest in new fields. Devin and I care very deeply about making this committee an inclusive space in which all of you feel safe, comfortable, and motivated to challenge yourself to grow as a delegate, statesperson, and human. We trust that you will conduct yourselves with maturity and tact when discussing sensitive subjects.

  • Varujan Vosganian, the Book of Whispers
Varujan Vosganian, The Book of Whispers Chapters seven and eight Translation: Alistair Ian Blyth Seven ‘Do not harm their women,’ said Armen Garo. ‘And nor the children.’ One by one, all the members of the Special Mission gathered at the offices of the Djagadamard newspaper in Constantinople. They had been selected with care. The group had been whittled down to those who had taken part in such operations before, working either alone or in ambush parties. ‘I trust only a man who has killed before,’ Armen Garo had declared. They were given photographs of those they were to seek out, wherever they were hiding. Their hiding places might be anywhere, from Berlin or Rome to the steppes of Central Asia. Broad-shouldered, bull-necked Talaat Pasha, the Minister of the Interior, was a brawny man, whose head, with its square chin and jaws that could rip asunder, was more like an extension of his powerful chest. In the lower part of the photograph, his fists, twice the size of a normal man’s, betokened pugnacity. Beside him, fragile, her features delicate, his wife wore a white dress and a lace cap in the European style, so very different from the pasha’s fez. Then there was Enver, a short man made taller by his boot heels. He had haughty eyes and slender fingers that preened the points of his moustache. He was proud of his army commander’s braids, which, cascading luxuriantly from his shoulders and covering his narrow chest, sought to disguise the humble beginnings of a son whose mother, in order to raise him, had plied one of the most despised trades in all the Empire: she had washed the bodies of the dead.

Focusing on the problematic role of folktales as tales about the unreal and the fantastic serving a political purpose, this study traces the creative exercises of Iranian storytellers who apply ideological codes and meanings to popular folk language. The works of Mirzadeh Eshqi (1893-1924), Sadegh Hedayat (1903-1951), Samad Behrangi (1939-1968) and Bijan Mofid (1935-1984) are examples of a larger collection of creative writing in Iran that through the agency of folklore shape the political imagination of Iranian readers. While Eshqi’s revolutionary ideas are artistically imbedded in oral culture of the Constitution era, Hedayat’s fiction follows with an intricate fusion of folklore and tradition. Later in the 20th Century, Behrangi introduces politically charged children’s tales to an invested audience, and Mofid dramatizes the joys and sorrow of Iranian culture through a familiar fable.

Onur Onol 2 ABSTRACT From the Tsarist confiscation of the properties of the Armenian Church in 1903 to the outbreak of the First World War, relations between Russia and its Armenian subjects gradually changed. This thesis scrutinizes how and why this gradual change took place between 1903 and 1914 by looking at the interaction between the Russian administration and the three political pillars of the Russian Armenians (the Dashnaktsutiun, the Armenian Church, and the Armenian bourgeoisie) as well as Russian foreign policy considerations. The confiscation decree of 1903 triggered an immense reaction by the Russian Armenians against the Russian government, which became part of the revolutionary unrest in the South Caucasus in 1905. The relations began to improve with the arrival of the viceroy of the Caucasus, Illarion I.

In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia expressed its disappointment with the decision taken by the Hungarian authorities to transfer Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan, and with his subsequent pardon by the President of Azerbaijan. It should be made clear at the outset that the transfer of Ramil Safarov from Hungary to Azerbaijan was a purely legal matter between the two countries, addressed in full conformity with the 1983 Strasbourg Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, to which both Hungary and Azerbaijan are parties.

Suny Professor Khachig Tölölyan, Wesleyan University ©Vahe Sahakyan 2015 To my parents ii Acknowledgments The completion of this project owes much to a large number of scholars, academics and intellectuals, friends and family members. My academic journey in diaspora studies began due to my training as a sociologist at Yerevan State University, Armenia. My sociological curiosity was quick to capture the significant differences in how Armenianness was experienced and expressed in the diaspora, when I first encountered third-fourth generation Armenian-Americans upon my arrival at the University of Michigan as a Junior Faculty Development Program visiting scholar in Fall 2004. This generous grant I was awarded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs provided me a possibility to spend a year at one of the leading American universities, where my interest in Armenian diasporic identities and institutions took shape. Frequent and often endless conversations with Kevork Bardakjian and Gerard Libaridian provided additional impetus to my curiosity. It was due to their continued encouragement and support that two years after returning to Armenia I finally decided to apply and was admitted to the Ph.D.
