The Archibald Senior Center presents a 13 Day/12 night Cruise (plus an overnight prior to your cruise) to Boston, Maine and Canada* aboard the Celebrity’s “Summit” August 29 – September 11, 2020. Places we will visit are Bar Harbor, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Quebec City, Quebec; Charlottetown, P.E.I; Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts! After departing from home, we will have an overnight stay at the Foxwoods Great Cedar Hotel & Casino Resort (includes a bonus package) and end the trip departing from Boston, MA. (not just for members) Seniors Day at the AL National Fair is Thursday, October 10, 2019 and the Archibald Center is going! Join Traci Herndon and Betty Taylor in carpooling to the fair! Cost to the Archibald Center is only $1 per person for parking. Your admission to the fair is $1 per person with a canned food item ($12 without a canned good). FREE BINGO with prizes (ages 55+) will be played at 9:30 and 11:30 am. Lunch is on your own. We will depart from the Archibald Center at 8:30 am and return at 1:30 pm. We will take the first 8 people who sign up.

On Tuesday, October 29, 2019, the Archibald Center will be headed to Ozark, AL for a guided tour the JD Holman House. The Holman House is a neoclassical residence built in Ozark, Al during 1912-1913. The Holman House was designed by Mr. C. Frank Galliher, a prominent regional architect from Montgomery. The home consists of two main floors of approximately 10,000 square feet, including a basement of approximately 5,000 square feet (stairs are used to enter the second floor). Cost is $30 per person which includes transportation. Lunch is on your own at the Hoppergrass, a local cafeteria-style restaurant offering good country food at reasonable prices. We will depart from The Fresh Market at 8 am and return to Montgomery around 4 pm. Deadline to sign up is September 26, 2019.

We the People: Alabama’s Defining Documents will feature all six of Alabama’s constitutions along with the 1861 ordinance of secession, which declared Alabama’s separation from the Union on the eve of the Civil War. We the People will be the first public display of these historic records since returning from their conservation, and the first time they have been displayed together. This exhibition is part of a statewide celebration of Alabama’s bicentennial in 2019. The Archibald Center will meet at the AL Department of Archives on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 10:45 am for a guided tour of this exhibit. Afterwards, we will enjoy a box lunch (drink included) for $10 per person (this is optional; you can choose to leave after the tour or bring your own lunch). Ham, Turkey, or Veggie box lunch selections can be chosen when you sign up. Deadline to sign up is November 7th. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - EXTENDED! The Archibald Center is having a Membership Drive! Current members (those up to date on their membership) who recruit the most people to join the Archibald Center by January 1, 2020 will win a grand prize awarded at the March 2020 Luncheon. Remember, the person must actually join. Membership is $36 for singles; $54 for couples per calendar year (membership dues are collected January 1 - March 31). Amazing Grace Ministries (AGM) is a charitable organization that provides healthcare education, as well as social service support, to senior adults and disabled persons. AGM is having a Shoe Drive! Bring in your gently worn, used or new pairs of shoes to the Archibald Center. Shoes collected help raise funds for AGM. A collection box is located in the main facility. Our August Luncheon was themed TRAVEL. Paper airplanes, compasses, and postcards lined the tables. We welcomed Shenae Fimia, Green Latern Branch Manager with Regions Bank, who talked to us about finiacial exploitation of senior adults. Ms. Fimia handed out important tips* and brought two other branch managers ready to assist us. I retired from accounting at Bresco Restaurant Supply Company in Birmingham in 2013. What are your hobbies and interests? I enjoy sewing, gardening and at present, I enjoy raising black swallowtail butterflies. I hope to raise monarch butterflies next year. Do you have any hidden talents? I enjoy genealogy research. I would like to travel to Key West. You are happiest when...My children and my grandchildren come home for the holidays. What else? After the last child started to school, I went back to school and earned my undergraduate in Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in dietetics, and my graduate degree in education.

We had a wonderful Cell Phone Workshop hosted by XiRepair! Jonathan Stranger, owner of XiRepair, had a wonderful presentation and brought staff to work individually with each person who attended. MOVIE DAY will be Wednesday, October 23rd beginning at 10 am and will feature Holmes & Watson. While investigating a murder at the Buckingham Palace, Sherlock Holmes and his trusted partner Dr. John Watson discover a far more heinous crime afoot. Further digging reveals a plot to assassinate the Queen of England, and together they must use their skills of deduction to prevent her majesty’s imminent demise. Staring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly In August, the Archibald Center enjoyed a DAY IN ATLANTA! We visited the Chick-Fil-A Headquarters and took a Backstage Tour. Afterwards, we dined at the original Chick-Fil-A followed by a private tour of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
