Fidel Castro Falls, Breaks Knee, Arm POSTED: 6:04 am EDT October 21, 2004 UPDATED: 3:29 pm EDT October 21, 2004 HAVANA, Cuba -- Cuban leader Fidel Castro says he is fine after falling off of the stage in Santa Clara, Cuba. Castro broke his knee and arm in the fall, sources say. The fall is bringing back memories of when he collapsed two years ago. FeedRoom http://www.nbc6.net/news/3838155/detail.html (3 of 7)6/22/2008 4:32:06 PM 'I'm Still In One Piece,' Castro Says - Local News Story - WTVJ | Miami LATEST IMAGES: New Images Of Castro's Fall Fidel Castro Falls On Stage June 2001 - Castro Faints Note: If you're viewing this story on the MSNBC web site and can't open the link to this slideshow, visit http://www.nbc6.net. E-Mail This Story: To A Friend Fidel Castro Takes A Tumble By all accounts, sources say, it appears it was a slip and fall. However, anything having to do with Fidel Castro always garners a lot of attention in Cuba and among South Florida's large Cuban-American population. Castro’s fall on Wednesday happened during a speech televised coast to coast in Cuba. Cuba's leader had been speaking to 30,000 people during a graduation ceremony 170 miles east of Havana. After Castro left the stage, he stumbled and fell. It appears as if he lost his footing while going down a flight of marble stairs. It was an eerie moment. The crowd of 30,000 people fell absolutely silent. After the fall, Castro took the microphone and spoke to the crowd. He joked that while he may have hurt his knee, he was still in one piece. In June 2001, while speaking at an outdoor event, Castro grew faint and was led offstage. That incident sparked speculation about his health and what might happen if he were no longer in power. Castro's health is a closely-guarded secret. According to an NBC reporter in Havana, people in the media and in Cuba were definitely talking about the incident, but it appeared they were less concerned about Tuesday’s fall than they were when he fainted in 2001. Meanwhile, Castro is expected to give another speech on Cuban television today. GET BREAKING NEWS ALERTS: Copyright 2004 by NBC6.net. All rights reserved. In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth. • The Proposed Comcast-NBC Universal Combination: How It Might Affect the Video Market
The Proposed Comcast-NBC Universal Combination: How It Might Affect the Video Market Charles B. Goldfarb Specialist in Telecommunications Policy February 2, 2010 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R41063 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress The Proposed Comcast-NBC Universal Combination Summary The proposed combination of Comcast, the largest distributor of video services in the United States, and NBC Universal (NBCU), a major producer and aggregator of video content, would create a huge, vertically integrated entity with potentially enormous negotiating power at a time when market forces already are altering traditional content provider/distributor relationships. Comcast would own or control media and entertainment properties of significant scope and scale. Despite the size and reach that Comcast would be afforded, there is so much uncertainty in the video market that the proposed combination has elicited a wide range of predictions about (1) how it would affect that market; (2) how it would affect the long-standing public policy goals of competition, diversity of voices, and localism; and (3) whether the merger would prove beneficial to Comcast’s shareholders. From one perspective, the scope of the combination would be so broad that, in addition to requiring careful scrutiny of its competitive effects, it potentially could affect market structure and relationships in ways that have implications for a wide range of media rules, regulations, and policies, including program carriage rules,

  • Here's Why Most New Network TV Shows Will Flop
September 2019 #74 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Here’s Why Most New Network TV Shows Will Flop By Steve Sternberg These are the best of times for TV viewers, but it might be the worst of times for broadcast TV. The mortality rate of new broadcast series is higher than ever. Out of 68 new primetime scripted series premiering in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, only 11 (16%) will still be on the air in fall 2019. Here are some thoughts on the whys and wherefores. The new TV season is not as relevant as it used to be. Prior to the early 2000s, the new fall TV season was one of the few entertainment topics discussed throughout the summer on syndicated TV shows such as Entertainment Tonight, Extra, and Access Hollywood, and print magazines such as People, Us, and Entertainment Weekly. The broadcast networks aired mostly repeats, cable networks contained mostly off-network reruns and reality, and except for the occasional movie blockbuster or celebrity scandal, there wasn’t much else to focus on. But that was before original scripted series started proliferating on various cable networks during the summer months, and before more than half the country subscribed to at least one streaming service. The new broadcast season simply doesn’t get as much press as it used to. There are new scripted series available to viewers year-round. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message Unrivaled Reach.
