I f you've ever wanted to see the biggest celebrities in the world lose their mind, all you needed to do was attend Friday night's 20th annual Race to Erase MS event, "Love to Erase MS," where the likes of Neil Patrick Harris, Bella Thorne, Shemar Moore, Rod Stewart, and tons more danced like crazy to a private concert by Elton John and Taio Cruz. When the event first started 20 years ago, there were no available drugs to treat MS on the market. Today there are nine. "It's pretty miraculous, compared to most any other disease," said Davis. And yet, there's still not a cure, which is why Hollywood's biggest power players opened their pockets to The event, put together by philanthropist and MS fighter Nancy Davis, benefited the Race to Erase help advance the cause.     The Osbournes’: Genre, Reality TV, and the Domestication of Rock ‘n Roll by Rick Pieto and Kelly Otter The latest trend of television programming is reality TV, a genre that finds its most valuable content in the unabashed display of individuals willing to be put on display as they part with their privacy, dignity, and composure. The genre is clear, yet the formula varies so as to keep it fresh and increasingly bizarre to maintain its audience. Young women compete for a husband on camera by attempting to win the affection of a bachelor in six weeks; individuals compete for money by conquering their fears and consume live insects or allow themselves to be submerged under water for as long as possible; and couples test the strength of their relationships by subjecting themselves to the temptation of desirable strangers. Love, fear, and conflict provide the substance of a good story, and television producers have found a context in which drama is manufactured before a camera crew. But given the absence of a constructed context and specific roles to play, how do we define The Osbournes? How should we generically define this program about an aging heavy metal rock star and his “dysfunctional family?” One way to begin to place The Osbournes within an appropriate genre is to look at MTV’s presentation of the show. MTV sells The Osbournes as a reality TV sitcom and indeed its narrative structure is loosely similar to the sitcom formula, with real-life segments edited and sequenced to be reminiscent of a scripted program.

    ‘CHRISTMAS AT GRACELAND’ Cast Bios KELLIE PICKLER (Laurel) - Kellie Pickler grew up immersed in country music in the small town of Albemarle, North Carolina with the words of Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton shaping her musical footing. At the age of 19, she first gained fame as a contestant on the fifth season of “American Idol.” She has gone on to release four critically acclaimed albums, including her Gold-certified debut Small Town Girl as well as 100 Proof, which Rolling Stone named the Best Country Album of 2011. Among her best-known hits are the Gold-certified “Red High Heels,” “I Wonder,” “Best Days of Your Life,” “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful,” “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind,” “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You” and “No Cure for Crazy.” In spring of 2013, Pickler partnered with dance coach Derek Hough and won the Mirror Ball Trophy on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” That same year, she also released her fourth album, The Woman I Am, with Black River Entertainment, which featured three songs co-written by Pickler including the title cut. Think about how much the entertainment industry has changed since the Press Club introduced these awards in 2008. Arnold Schwarzenegger was our governor, not a Terminator. Netflix sent you DVDs in the mail. The iPhone was one year old. Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition.
