Recent earthquakes, including the Lushan earthquake in 2013, have resulted in thousands of people losing their homes and their families. However, there is a research gap on the efficiency of government support policies. Therefore, this study develops a new perspective to study the health of earthquake survivors, based on the effect of post-earthquake rescue policies on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of survivors of the Sichuan earthquake. Methods: This study uses data from a survey conducted in five hard-hit counties (Wenchuan, Qingchuan, Mianzhu, Lushan, and Dujiangyan) in Sichuan in 2013. A total of 2,000 questionnaires were distributed, and 1,672 were returned; the response rate was 83.6%. Results: Results of the rescue policies scale and Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) scale passed the reliability test. The confirmatory factor analysis model showed that the physical component summary (PCS) directly affected the mental component summary (MCS). The results of structural equation model regarding the effects of rescue policies on HRQOL showed that the path coefficients of six policies (education, orphans, employment, poverty, legal, and social rescue policies) to the PCS of survivors were all positive and passed the test of significance. -

ABSTRACT Understanding the distribution and the extent of suitable habitats is crucial for wildlife conservation and management. Knowledge is limited regarding the natural habitats of the Chinese monal (Lophophorus lhuysii), which is a vulnerable Galliform species endemic to the high-montane areas of southwest China and a good candidate for being an umbrella species in the Qionglai Mountains. Using ecological niche modeling, we predicted current potential suitable habitats for the Chinese monal in the Qionglai Mountains with 64 presence points collected between 2005 and 2015. Suitable habitats of the Chinese monal were associated with about 31 mm precipitation of the driest quarter, about 15 ◦C of maximum temperature of the warmest month, and far from the nearest human residential locations (>5,000 m). The predicted suitable habitats of the Chinese monal covered an area of 2,490 km2, approximately 9.48% of the Qionglai Mountains, and was highly fragmented. 54.78% of the suitable habitats were under the protection of existing nature reserves and two conservation gaps were found. -

From an interdisciplinary lens, interrogating the many interrelated elements of recovery, this dissertation examines the post-Wenchuan earthquake reconstruction and recovery. It explores questions about sense of home, civic participation and reconstruction primarily based on the phenomenon of the survivors of the Wenchuan Earthquake losing their sense of home after their post-disaster relocation and reconstruction. The following three aspects of the reconstruction are examined: 1) the influence of local residents’ previous memories of their original hometown on their relocation and the reconstruction of their social worlds and lives, 2) the civic participation that took place throughout the post-disaster reconstruction, 3) the government interventions overseeing and facilitating the entire post-disaster reconstruction. Based on fieldwork, archival and document research, memory workshops and walk-along interviews, a qualitative study was conducted with the aim of examining the earthquake survivors’ general memories of daily life and specific memories of utilizing space in their original hometown. -

In just 12 seconds, more than 170 towns, including those in the proximity of Chengdu City, were either destroyed or badly damaged. More than 45 million people were affected by the earthquake—the worst natural disaster to hit China in 30 years. ISG Capital Management, Ltd. (―ISG‖) is a private equity real estate investment firm based in Shanghai, China and in New York. Our team is made up of highly experienced real estate professionals. We at ISG are especially saddened by the tragedy due to our longstanding relationship with the disaster area. Many of our staff are either from that region or have close friends and relatives still living there. Some staff members have been working on development projects around Chengdu and elsewhere in Sichuan for years. Our founder, Li Li, began her career as a high school teacher in the 1980s and is from a family of educators whose hometown is Chengdu. Our close ties to the stricken region and our real estate expertise have led us to the conclusion that the best long- term contribution that ISG can make to help the people affected by this tragedy is to rebuild a school for the children of Dayi County. -

Levy Received: 3 December 2016; Accepted: 24 January 2017; Published: 28 January 2017 Abstract: The concept of resilience was integrated into post-earthquake ecological restoration assessments in 10 counties heavily impacted by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Ecological resilience was defined as the time interval required for the vegetation coverage to recover to pre-earthquake levels in damaged areas. MODIS-EVI data from May to August in 2000 to 2016 were used to calculate the ecological resilience by fitting the curve of recovery rate (RR) versus time. The following conclusions were reached: (1) An area of 424.1 km2 sustained vegetation damage. (2) The vegetation recovery was found to be linear based on the statistical analysis of the most common components of the damaged areas; consequently, linear fitting was used to estimate the resilience. (3) In terms of vegetation coverage, 44.2% of the damaged areas have already recovered. The vast majority of damaged areas are predicted to achieve vegetation recovery by 2022, but 5.3% of the damaged areas will not recover within this time period and have no resilience. -

Die Verheißung unbeschadeten Fortschritts wird in der Ideologie der Kommu- UNIVERSITY PRESS nistischen Partei Chinas (KPCh) durchgängig aufrechterhalten. Ideologeme bringen die Überzeugung der KPCh zum Ausdruck, dass Entwicklung und Fortschritt unter ihrer Lenkung plan- und durchführbar sind, Entwicklungsziele somit erreichbar werden und zukünftiger Fortschritt generiert werden kann. Ideologeme werden als Legitimationsinstrumente eingesetzt, die sowohl eine konkrete Handlung oder Aufforderung beinhalten, wie Ziele erreicht werden können, als auch auf der Überzeugung basieren, dass der Entwicklungsweg der VR China sowie der angestrebte Fortschritt richtig sind. Sie wirken sinn- stiftend in den jeweiligen Kontext hinein und ermöglichen, dass auch über die Äußerungen der Partei hinaus deren ideologische Inhalte Kontinuität behalten. Herausforderungen wie die Realisierung planungsintensiver Großprojekte mit weitreichenden wirtschaftlichen, ökologischen und sozialen Auswirkungen, z.B. der Bau von Atomkraftwerken oder des Drei-Schluchten-Staudamms, und das Erfordernis einer Auseinandersetzung mit der Nuklearkatastrophe von Fukushima und Naturkatastrophen, wie dem Erdbeben von Wenchuan, bieten Anlass für ein Hinterfragen des von der KPCh propagierten Fortschrittsdenkens. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden Fortschritts- und Entwicklungsideologeme in der KPCh seit dem Jahr 1949 sowie ihr Aufscheinen in den Fallbeispielen, Diskussion der Atomenergie in der VR China, des Wenchuan-Erdbebens und FAU Studien aus der Philosophischen Fakultät 12 des Drei-Schluchten-Staudamm-Projektes, untersucht. In 2014, 866 valid questionnaires were collected. Han and Qiang & Zang households were analyzed using logistic regression to determine the factors influencing household recovery. It was found that the householder of the Qiang & Zang group played a more important role in household recovery. Different from the Han, females from Qiang & Zang households had negative attitudes on recovery, and Qiang & Zang households did not believe in the effectiveness of public donations for post-quake recovery. The study also showed that local workers in a household were more helpful for household recovery than were migrant workers in a household, regardless of ethnicity. Therefore, the government should create more local jobs in Han and Qiang & Zang households and pay more attention to women in Qiang households. Assistance should be established specifically for the psychological recovery of Qiang women and family recovery projects. -
