  • Ottoman History of South-East Europe by Markus Koller
Ottoman History of South-East Europe by Markus Koller The era of Ottoman Rule, which began in the fourteenth century, is among the most controversial chapters of South-East European history. Over several stages of conquest, some of them several decades long, large parts of South-Eastern Europe were incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, or brought under its dominion. While the Ottomans had to surrender the territories north of the Danube and the Sava after the Peace Treaty of 1699, the decline of Ot- toman domination began only in the nineteenth century. Structures of imperial power which had been implemented in varying forms and intensity in different regions were replaced by emerging nation states in the nineteenth century. The development of national identities which accompanied this transformation was greatly determined by the new states distancing themselves from Ottoman rule, and consequently the image of "Turkish rule" has been a mainly negative one until the present. However, latest historical research has shown an increasingly differentiated image of this era of South-East European history. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Military and Political Developments 2. Cross-Cultural Exchange in the Post-Medieval Adriatic: An examination of glass artefacts from the 15th through mid-18th centuries By: Samantha Garwood A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Archaeology September 2017 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the support, guidance, and access to materials provided by friends, family, and colleagues throughout the last four years. Thanks must first be given to my supervisor, Hugh Willmott, for allowing me this amazing research opportunity, and for putting up with my general lack of knowledge. Thanks must also be given to Phil McCluskey, who very kindly continued to support my research even after his time at Sheffield came to an end. Thanks also to the University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities for the scholarship which made this possible. Thank you to the many museums who granted me access to their collections: Muzej grada Trogira, especially Lujana Paraman; the Arheološka zbirka Osor – Lošinjski muzej, particularly Jasminka Ćus-Rukonić; Marina Lambasa, Emil Podrug, and the Muzej grada Šibenika; Radmila Biondić and Marina Kovač at the Muzej Slavonije; Igor Mihajlović at the Hrvatski restauratorski zavod; Dr Vesna Bikić at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade; and Ðivo Bašić at Pomorski Muzej, Dubrovački Muzeji. Thank you also to Ilir Parangoni for showing me some of the glass finds from Butrint, and to Nikolina Topić, Margherita Ferri, and Luka Bekić for sharing their research with me. Finally, thank you to my family and friends for supporting me through all of this.

  • Sigismund of Luxemburg and the Wallachian Princely “Stars” of the Fifteenth Century*
At the Turn of the Fourteenth Century: Sigismund of Luxemburg and the Wallachian Princely “Stars” of the Fifteenth Century* Alexandru Simon** Abstract: In late spring 1398, the noble judges of the Inner Szolnok County rejected John Toth as the legal representative of Stephen I, voivode of Moldavia. Toth (i.e. the Slav/ Slovak, chiefly in later centuries) was in fact merely the procurator of Stephen’s appointed procurator (representative), a certain John, the son of Costea. Mircea I the Elder, the voivode of Wallachia, was experiencing similar legal problems at the time in the Voivodate of Tran-sylvania. In January 1399, his procurator, Nicholas Dobokai of Luduş, the son of Ladislas Dobokai (the relative of Mircea's step-uncle, Wladislaw I Vlaicu), had to admit he did not know the exact boundaries of the estate of the Hunyad castle, recently granted by Sigismund of Luxemburg to Mircea. The two documents, almost trivial in essence, point towards two neglected issues: the first Transylvanian estates granted by a king of Hungary to a voivode of Moldavia and to the transalpine origins of the Hunyadi family. Placed in the context of other edited and unedited sources (charters and chronicles), the documents in question provide new perspectives on the beginnings and actions of famed Wallachian personalities of the next century. Keywords: Doboka (Dăbâca), Hunyad, Transylvania, Wallachia, Sigismund Luxemburg, Mircea I of Wallachia, Stephen I of Moldavia, John Hunyadi. In late spring 1398, the noble judges of the Inner Szolnok County1 rejected John Toth as the legal representative of Stephen I, voivode of Moldavia. Toth (i.e.
