This primarily refers to the extremely mountainous and coastal regions that are recognizable mainly for ski tourism or bathing tourism. However, the regions without a recognizable "tourist identity" with an attractive natural base and many potentials, especially climate, such as Northeast Bosnia have the opportunity to develop different forms of recreational tourism (sports - recreational, excursion - recreational, health - recreational) in individual parts throughout the year. The favorability of climatic predispositions of Northeast Bosnia is highlighted by the results of analyzes which show that during the year there are neither adverse nor impossible climatic conditions for the development of different forms of recreational tourism. High quality active outdoor activities in the spring and autumn months are usually carried out through

Also, the article tries to throw a little more light on this notion, through a multidisciplinary view on the part of the population that has been named Vlachs in the past or present. The goal is to create an image of what they really are, and what they have never been, through a specific chronological historical overview of data related to the Vlachs. Thus, it allows the reader to understand, through the facts presented here, the misconceptions that are related to this term in the historiographic literature. Key words: Vlachs, Morlachs, Serbs, Slavs, Wallachia, Moldavia, Romanian Orthodox Church The terms »Vlach«1, or later, »Morlach«2, does not represent the nationality, that is, they have never represented it throughout the history, because both of this terms exclusively refer to the members of Serbian nation, in the Serbian ethnic area. –––––––––––– [email protected] 1 Serbian (Cyrillic script): влах. »Now in answer to all these frivolous assertions, it is sufficient to observe, that our Morlacchi are called Vlassi, that is, noble or potent, for the same reason that the body of the nation is called Slavi, which means glorious; that the word Vlah has nothing

  • Ottoman History of South-East Europe by Markus Koller
Ottoman History of South-East Europe by Markus Koller The era of Ottoman Rule, which began in the fourteenth century, is among the most controversial chapters of South-East European history. Over several stages of conquest, some of them several decades long, large parts of South-Eastern Europe were incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, or brought under its dominion. While the Ottomans had to surrender the territories north of the Danube and the Sava after the Peace Treaty of 1699, the decline of Ot- toman domination began only in the nineteenth century. Structures of imperial power which had been implemented in varying forms and intensity in different regions were replaced by emerging nation states in the nineteenth century. The development of national identities which accompanied this transformation was greatly determined by the new states distancing themselves from Ottoman rule, and consequently the image of "Turkish rule" has been a mainly negative one until the present. However, latest historical research has shown an increasingly differentiated image of this era of South-East European history. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Military and Political Developments 2. • Islam: State and Religion in Modern Europe by Patrick Franke
Islam: State and Religion in Modern Europe by Patrick Franke From the early Middle Ages until the beginning of the twentieth century, Islamic states were an integral part of Europe's political geography. Throughout the modern period the Ottoman Empire, with its capital in Istanbul, was the most important Islamic power on the continent. The Ottoman conquest of south‐eastern Europe, which was already well advanced in the 15th century, initiated a phase of Islamization that came in several waves before ending in the 19th century. Other important centres of European Islam were the Iberian Peninsula (until the early 17th century), the Russian Volga‐Ural region, and the Crimea. The decline of the European Islamic states (Granada, the eastern European Khanates, the Ottoman Empire) put many Muslims under the rule of non‐Islamic states, each of which reacted with the development of its own particular policies for dealing with Islam. For the Muslim populations, this loss of power resulted in important processes of modernization. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Islamic Statehood in Europe between 1450 and 1950 2. Notes Indices Citation Islamic Statehood in Europe between 1450 and 1950 In the mid‐15th century a number of small Islamic states existed on the edges of various parts of Europe (➔ Media Link #ab). The southern Iberian Peninsula1 was home to the Nasrid Emirate of Granada, which, however, was in decline in this period. In 1485 the Christian states of Castile and Aragon began their systematic conquest of the Emirate, at a time when the Muslims were exhausting their energies in a civil war.

  • Development of Ragusan Diplomatic Service in the First Half of the Fifteenth Century
Development of Ragusan Diplomatic Service in the First Half of the Fifteenth Century Father and Son at the Court of Duke Sandalj Hranić Valentina Zovko One of the signi#$cant characteristics of the Ragusan foreign afairs during the medieval period was avoiding armed con%&icts. When the authorities did not manage to implement this endeavour, diplomacy played an important role in attempts to end them and insure damage reparations. In the #$rst half of the #$fteenth century the city of Dubrovnik was involved in Ragusan- Bosnian war (1403-1404) and the War of Konavle (1430-1433). During both con%&icts the government turned for help to Duke Sandalj Hranić of Bosnia. During the #$rst war, duke was in the process of rising to his fame, and the ending of this particular war, that brought Ostoja’s dethronisation and the fall of the Sanković family, marked Hranić’s rise to power. During the second war he was the key partner in Dubrovnik`s plan of destroying the hostile family Pavlović of Bosnia. The importance of Duke Sandalj for the outcome of these con%&icts sets the assumption that the government carefully took into account to select the most skilled noble for a holder of the mission. Marin, son of Ni#$ko de Gondula (around 1355-1405) 1 and his son Benedict (around 1390-1446) 2 received this con#$dence. It is interesting to notice that almost none of them had had an earlier experience in the service. 3 On the other hand, they took advantage of the ‘symbolic capital’ of their predecessors that enjoyed high political and social reputations in ful#$lling diplomatic missions.

  • Venetian Public Debt Servicing and Precious Metals from the Balkans
My ships come home a month before the day: Venetian public debt servicing and precious metals from the Balkans Miloš Božović Faculty of Economics University of Belgrade Kamenička 6 11000 Belgrade, Serbia Email: [email protected] This draft: January, 2017 1 Abstract Was monetary base crucial for early sovereign debt sustainability? This paper analyses whether Venetian public debt servicing costs in the late medieval period were driven by the availability of gold and silver. We use an error correction model to describe changes in yields on perpetual bonds issued by the Venetian state. We document that the ability of the Venetian Republic to service its sovereign borrowing can be partially attributed to supply of precious metals. In particular, we show that the large increase in debt servicing costs during the 15th century can be associated with an abrupt halt in supply of gold and silver from mines in Serbia and Bosnia – mostly a consequence of the Ottoman western expansion. We control for other explanatory factors, such as mean reversion of nominal yield, real GDP growth and military conflicts. JEL classifications: N23, E44, E51, F34 Keywords: Venetian prestiti; sovereign debt; monetary base; precious metals; late medieval mines 2 1. INTRODUCTION In the post-crisis era of quantitative easing, we naturally associate monetary policy with central banks. However, even in the days of commodity money, when modern instruments and institutions did not exist yet, sovereign debt monetisation was nevertheless a common practice. Is there a deeper link between monetary base and sovereign debt sustainability? Which lessons could be learned from the early days of public debt, when there were no central monethary authorities? The story of late medieval Venice may provide some of the answers.
