COA-4a, Page 1 of 15 College of Southern Nevada-Report on Intercollegiate Athletics 2015 Executive Summary The Intercollegiate athletic programs at the College of Southern Nevada are a growing and exciting contributor to the educational mission of the institution. During 2015, there were major changes in the function and processes for CSN Athletics. Volleyball was added as an intercollegiate sport. The softball locker room and clubhouse were completed. Designation of a full time women’s softball coach demonstrates a major commitment to women’s educational and athletic opportunities, and keeps CSN in compliance with its gender equity plan. Plans are in place to complete an on campus softball facility in March of 2016 and replace the grass field at Morse stadium with artificial turf. This will allow for better utilization of water resources, men’s and women’s intercollegiate soccer competition and other recreational, intramural, and institutional activities. The NJCAA is in the midst of a major overhaul of academic and competitive operational plans and procedures. Examples of impending change might include how eligibility is determined and reported to philosophical changes in competitive models. The evolution of the NJCAA is certain. The Scenic West Athletic Conference is also in the state of evolution as CSN strengthens the conference with women’s volleyball; however the loss of North Idaho and Western Nevada will have a significant impact on regional junior college competition and expenses. As soccer comes on line at most SWAC institutions, including CSN, the depth of the Scenic West Athletic Conference improves as our physical numbers contract. Presidential involvement in the conference has increased with the Presidents meeting in Salt Lake City in August to establish direction for the conference while seeking additional conference membership and regional realignment. Academic success of student-athletes continues to mirror, or exceed, overall institutional outcomes. Student-athletes are attending class and graduating on time. Additional efforts to increase retention and overall numbers of graduates should improve. A full time academic advisor increases the expectation for continued academic success of CSN student athletes. As with any worthwhile enterprise a solid operational foundation must be in place as a precursor to success. The completion of our operational handbook and strengthening of our coaching, fundraising, academic and operational staff lends itself to greater involvement in our institution and our community. COA-4a, Page 2 of 15 College of Southern Nevada-Report on Intercollegiate Athletics 2015 OFFICE OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS AND RECREATION MISSION The Office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation (OIAR) supports the academic mission of CSN while fostering connections with the greater Las Vegas community and beyond. The OIAR will contribute to the achievement of CSN’s mission by providing student-athletes the opportunity to compete at their highest level of ability on an array of competitive intercollegiate athletic teams that emphasize academic success and graduation, “winning championships”, personal development, growth in character, ethical conduct and sportsmanship. VISION The Office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation vision is to model excellence as an NSHE collegiate program, as well as a National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Program. CORE VALUES The Athletic Office has adopted five core values to guide decisions and behaviors in fulfilling its mission and vision: 1) a confident and humble pride, 2) integrity in words and deeds, 3) sharing of our success with ALL stakeholders, 4) loyalty built on honest and trusting relationships, and 5) investing in humanity through our student athletes, employees, and our community. GOALS OF THE OFFICE OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS 2015-20 College of Southern Nevada 1) Recruit every eligible student-athlete from greater Las Vegas and Southern Nevada that can play at this level or above. 2) 100% graduation of student-athletes that stay in our program. 3) Build measurable campus & community Coyote “Spirit”. 4) Develop and expand recognizable branding of Coyote intercollegiate athletics and the College. 5) Be fully NJCAA compliant. 6) Develop and maintain fiscal responsibility and accountability by all sports. 7) Strive to win every contest. NJCAA Compliance at the College of Southern Nevada a. The College of Southern Nevada reported no National Junior College Athletic Association primary or secondary violations for the 2014-15 school year. b. There are no current NJCAA or conference investigations underway. c. Title IX Compliance The Office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation at the College of Southern Nevada is determined to be in compliance with Title IX regulations as effectively as possible. In our efforts to be compliant there are several areas in our purview that must be addressed. These efforts will require renewed and possibly new cooperation, between academics and athletics, as well as reaching out to other areas of the institution in order to expand our potential for success. Recognizing the need to address potential issues, we also recognize the following as areas of strength: • Team’s budgets are allocated amongst all programs equitably. • Women’s Softball club house and locker room completed in 2014-15. • Full time women’s softball positon was approved and a coach is being recruited. • Women’s Volleyball was instituted and will begin play in the fall of 2015 with a full conference and non-conference schedule. • Planning is complete and construction will begin in the fall of 2015 for the on campus women’s softball facility. Several general observations are useful here about recent activities and new steps that we plan: • The Office of Intercollegiate Athletics routinely monitors squad sizes for men and women. This helps us meet goals for participation by the women’s programs. • Develop and build gender neutral training room. • We will continue to monitor participation rates using the data that was included in this Gender Equity report.
